Synopsis (via Lifetime)

In this follow-up to one of Lifetime’s most successful true crime movies, Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret, we will see a whole new side of the infamous murderess and the story that has captivated the world for nearly a decade. Celinda Sinden stars in the new movie, Bad Behind Bars: Jodi Arias as Jodi, who has just been arrested and sent to prison while she awaits trial for murdering her boyfriend, Travis Alexander. When she arrived in jail, Jodi charms her way through prison and befriends a couple, Donavan Bering and Tracy Brown. The three inmates became inseparable, Donovan and Tracy doing anything and everything Jodi asked — even letting the murderess tattoo her name on one of them. Donovan was released from prison as Jodi’s trial drew near and agreed to be Jodi’s mouthpiece, posting on her social pages and defending her friend to the world. But when the details of the case and Jodi’s story were no longer adding up and Donovan refused to continue to do her former friend’s bidding, Jodi’s vengeful side emerged. Stars Celina Sinden, Tricia Black, Lynn Rafferty, Karl Campbell, Adesola Adesina, Michelle Haffey, Christine Noble, and Maggie Cassella (2023).

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie stars Donovan Bering talking to the police. She is the second most hated person in the USA, and the first is Jodi Arias.

Donovan is dating Tracy Brown, and they are serving their time when Jodi Arias shows up and messes everything up. Jodi doesn’t belong and is an easy target at first. Her fellow prisoners think she is doing time for snitching because they do not have access to the news.

Jodi begins winning over her cellmate, Tracy, first by earning her trust and giving her a prison tattoo. Tracy starts to open up about why they are all in prison. Jodi claims that her boyfriend was murdered in front of her.

Sharing bread, buying extra phone time, and acting helpless are just some of the ways Jodi gets Donovan, Tracy, and Montana to stick up for her when anyone tries to mess with her. At night, Jodi does TV interviews and sings Amazing Grace to the prisoners, which Donovan calls “The Sound of the Devil singing us to sleep.”

There was one set of rules at the prison for Jodi Arias and one for everyone else. The movie even implies that Jodi slept with a few guards. Jodi can’t relate to the prisoner’s stories of terrible childhoods because (according to Jodi) her life has been perfect! (Aside from the whole… murder thing!)

Tracy and Donovan get prison married, and Jodi does the ceremony. (This prison seems kind of fun?!)

Jodi Arias tells Tracy that if she is found guilty, she will kill herself. (She is unanimously convicted of first-degree murder.)

SOMEONE (Jodi probs) reports Tracy and Donovan’s relationship, and they are dramatically split up. Tracy is dragged to solitary. With no one to protect them, Donovan and Jodi try to lay low. Jodi even tries to manipulate Donovan to run a social media account in honor of Jodi when she gets out.

When new prisoners arrive, they know about Jodi and her murder trial. They want to gain notification for killing a killer.

Donovan also gets placed in solitary, leaving Jodi alone. Jodi writes to Donovan and starts her manipulation. Jodi writes letters to her, planning social media and PR appearances. Donovan isn’t focused on Jodi and wants to find Tracy when she gets out of jail, which she does!

Jodi is persistent, calling for Donovan to do her dirty work to prove her innocence. Donovan is just one of many people that Jodi is manipulating around the world #TeamArias

Donovan is disowned for supporting the wrong people. Donovan goes on national TV and defends Jodi Arias publicly. It causes her to lose her job and family. Speaking of family, Donovan even meets with Jodi’s family. Tracy also gets mistreated at her next prison because of her tattoo, signed by Jodi Arias.

Tracy calls Donovan and tells her to stop helping Jodi because it is making her life in prison awful. Donovan says she can’t. Donovan is shocked when at court, she learns that the DA doesn’t claim that Jodi did kill her boyfriend, but she was forced to.

Jodi asks Donovan to partner with domestic abuse organizations and plays the victim. (Which she may have been, we don’t know.) Donovan continues to take calls from Jodi in prison but finally begins to have her doubts. Even still, she stands by Jodi because Jodi claims it was self-defense. (Even though in court, the coroner says Jodi killed Travis Alexander three times.)

On the stand, Jodi claims that her mother beat her with a wooden spoon when she was a child, and her father beat her with a belt. The stories she recounts were told to her by Tracy when they shared a cell. This is the final straw for Donovan.

Speaking of Tracy, she ODs in prison and calls Donovan to get her to stop helping Jodi. Tracy can’t take the constant bullying for being associated with her. Donovan agrees that it is time to take Jodi down. She changes the passwords to Jodi’s social media accounts.

#TeamArias turn against Donovan and come after her. Even threatening her life. Jodi calls Donovan and asks her to change the social media passwords back.

Donovan goes to the press and shares all the lies Jodi told her.

Tracy was released from prison and married Donovan in 2018. Jodi Arias is still in prison, up to no good.

Side Note

Minority Report: Donovan, Tracy, Montana, Officer Bricker, Warden, new inmate.

Tania Raymonde is not returning for this film and will be replaced by Celina Sinden in the Jodi Arias role. She was fine.
