Synopsis (via Lifetime)

The story of Bertie, an aging matriarch and reality television star whose carefully constructed world starts to crumble–like the baked goods that catapulted her to fame–when family secrets are brought to light. To see the truth and salvage her legacy, Bertie must let go of the pride that estranged her from her late college-dropout daughter. A pride that prevents Bertie from seeing her son Gabe as the thieving opportunist he is and her granddaughter Ella as just a lost twenty-something trying to build up her life after some missteps–not someone to hold in contempt. Pride brought Bertie up the climb, but it also made her blind–it’s time for her to see or face the consequences. Stars Keeya King, Stephanie Mills, Thomas Miles, Lucia Walters, and Jaime M. Callica (2023)

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie begins with a couple kissing in the car at the end of a date. Gabriella looks at her phone absentmindedly before she is thrown down the stairs.

Flash to six months before when Gabrielle or “Ella” is arrested for something in Texas. She is bailed out by her mom’s mother, Chicago reality show star/bakery owner Birdie Moore. The stipulation of the bail-out is that Ella must live with Birdie and film the reality show. (It would be good for ratings to have a convict relative show up on camera!)

Gabe, Ella’s uncle, who also lives at Birdie’s house, is a party animal and excited to have someone new at Birdie’s Bakery. He helps her boost her social media presence and shows her the ropes of reality star fame. Ella is quick to whip up DRAMA when she learns there is a pie named after her dead mother, who was estranged from the family.

Ella knows her mother’s actual recipe and argues on camera with Birdie. She acted to reenact scenes for the camera and eventually signs a reality show contract.

The episode with Ella is a huge success, she blows up on social media, and the business is booming!

Birdie, of course, goes into a diabetic coma just as things are turning around for Ella. She worries she accidentally gave Birdie the wrong medication and caused the illness. The medicine looks to Ella like it could have been switched out.

A Hunk named Kahlil gives Ella a ride home. He works security for the family. They start dating because they are both hot. (Good for them!)

When Birdie wakes up from her Coma, she wants to add Ella to her will and give her half of the inheritance.

Six months have passed, and we are back at the beginning of the movie, where Ella is thrown down the stairs. Ella is unconscious and has a dream where she is in all white looking for her mother, who calls out to her. Paramedics bring her back to life.

When money goes missing after the home invasion, Birdie blames Ella and accuses her of stealing. Ella is hurt by the accusation. The Police question Ella because everything is caught on camera, and the show makes Ella look guilty.

Greg admits that he is jealous of Ella to his mother, and she tells him that while he has helped with the reality show, Ella is still entitled to her fair share of the family money. We later learn he hasn’t been sending child support money, even though Birdie paid him money to cover that cost!

Ella breaks up with Kahlil but gets back with him after a romantic stroll in the rain. Ella starts receiving Threatening notes, and she feels like someone is following her. Then she is almost run over by a car.

It has been almost an hour and a half. Ella’s nut allergy has been brought up TWICE, and no one has tried to kill her with a bran-nut muffin or something. Gabe does take out a life insurance policy on Ella.

Gabe also films a pilot for a new Birdie’s Bakery in Detroit. Birdie visits the bakery with Ella and isn’t impressed. Gabe screams at everyone and is generally ungrateful for everything his mother has given him. Birdie blames herself for working to hard and not focusing on raising him right.

Gabe attacks Ella and forces her to eat a pie with nuts. Kahlil is there too, but he is tied up and gagged. Gabe says he misses his sister and was left all alone when she died. They talk about spaghetti pie, Ella being named after Gabe, before she starts having an allergic reaction. He can’t have her take his place and admits to killing her for the insurance money.

Birdie walks into the scene and tells Gabe to give Ella her epipen. While they argue, Kahill unties himself and knocks Gabe out and Ella is saved.

Birdie records a send off for her reality show, she is done with the fame and recovering from cancer. Birdie regrets not being there for her daughter during her last days because she couldn’t swallow her… PRIDE! The end! We said the seven deadly sin, finally!
