Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Close friends become pregnant at the same time, but when one of them miscarries, jealousy turns her into a murderous baby snatcher. Stars Jennifer Taylor, Matthew Lawrence, Adrienne Thomas and Paul London (2023).

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie begins with a cold open house on fire and a child watching it burn while eating a gallon of ice cream.

Cut to a celebrating ReaEstate agent and her best friend, Penelope, toasting (with sparkling apple juice) to a home sale. They are both pregnant.

Penelope is thankful for her best friend because the home-buying process has been stressful, and Penelope’s husband, Richie (Reluctant Lifetime Movie Hunk, Matthew Lawrence), almost lost his job.SPEAKING of Matthew Lawrence, he is very supportive of Penelope and is excited to meet the baby.

Eve’s husband, Cheif Tom, is just as supportive… even if Eve is a crazy plant lady. (She named her plants after the Kardashians.) While the chef works in the kitchen, Eve takes a shower and loses the baby. (In a tragic late pregnancy, miscarriage)

Flash to 8 months earlier, Eve and Penelope meet with a fertility doctor. They start treatments together, and the nurse wishes them “Baby Dust.” (The movie’s original title.) The plan seems to be that Eve will donate eggs to Penelope, who is having trouble with fertility.

A pill-taking montage takes place as the days of treatment tick by. (Lots of needles here for those who are squeamish.) The BIG difference is that Eve is taking the fertility treatment without Tom’s knowledge. She also intentionally gets pregnant, making her an unsuitable egg donor for Eve.

Penelope is understandably upset and cries to her husband. He offers to sell his antique car for the money for an egg donation. Penelope stresses because she wants to be a mom very badly. (She doesn’t wait long because we must keep this movie moving, and Penelope gets pregnant.)

Flashback to the present day, Penelope and Richie live their best lives, unaware of the miscarriage. Then Tom calls the break the news.

Eve is a walking shell overtaken by grief. She shuffles around the house and angrily kills her plants. (Out of context, it’s hilarious! Poor Kylie, Kendall, Kim, and Khloe!!!!) The destruction continues when Eve breaks a TV because it plays a commercial for Dr. Jone’s clinic.

Baby Gender reveals are problematic; moving on!

Penelope feels wrong about celebrating her pregnancy, while Eve is depressed but has to move on and prep for the baby. She tries to include Eve, but Eve is not leaving the house or talking to anyone.

Dr. Jones closes up the clinic, and the lights suddenly cut out, only leaving a flashing red emergency light. Someone grabs her and bludgeons the doctor to death. (Off camera, thankfully.)

The news of the doctor’s murder springs Eve back to life! She visits Penelope and shares that she is evolving and rising. Penelope can tell something is off and tells Ricky that she is frightened by the change. Eve invites herself over to see Penelope’s nursery and tells her she has a “‘new plan.”

Strange things start happening at the new house Penelope and Ricky moved into. Water runs from the shower and faucets in the middle of the night. Penelope also finds the sliding glass door open. She begins to feel unsafe in her own home.

Tom randomly tracks down Eve’s birth mother to help his wife feel more connected to her family. (It is presented as a grand gesture, but I think it is RUDE!) Eve meets with her mother, who HATES her because SHE was the fire ice cream kid. Eve lied to Tom about her past. While they remember the bad old days, Eve gives her mother some tea, and it is totally poisoned. Eve watches cooly as her mother dies.

Tom discovers the fertility drugs and accuses Eve of lying to him. When he confronts her, Eve bullies him and gaslights him into breaking his four-year sobriety.

An intruder breaks into Penelope’s home and trashes the nursery. They call the police and report the intrusion. As they clean up the damage, they hear a drunken Tom screaming out front. He calls Richie out front, and they get into a brawl.

Eve awaits Tom’s return and beats herself up to make it look like he attacked her. When he wakes up on the couch to find and beaten wife, Tom is horrified. Eve explains that he drunkenly attacked Richie and then her. She makes him some tea to calm him down. He is the next mouth-foaming victim.

Richie goes over to check on Eve, and she tells him that Tom beat her. Eve cries in Richie’s arms and then attempts to seduce him. Richie tries to stop Eve, and that sets her off. He sees Tom’s lifeless body and tries to call the police, but Eve konks him on the head.

After a few hours go by, Penelope calls her husband to see what is going on. Then she calls Eve, who plays dumb. Penelope calls the police investigator who helped with the break-in, but she is not very helpful.

Eve shares her cover-up plan with a passed-out Richie. She plans to set the house on fire like she did years ago to kill her father. Then Eve goes over to Penelope to make her some poisoned tea.

Richie breaks free and covers his face with a wet dishcloth to get out. He inhales a lot of smoke but survives and rushes to rescue his pregnant wife from her own damn BFF.

Penelope goes to the bathroom to splash water on her face and instead gets a plastic bag over her head. Eve ties Penelope to the baby crib and demands to have her baby. Eve plans to take care of Penelope until she has the baby and then kill her. Penelope is horrified and screams for help so convincingly that I almost left my house to find her.

The police detective is far less motivated than I am and casually looks around the house after getting a call from Richie. Since she has no backup, Eve stabs the police officer with some scissors. (But she is a “tough cookie” and survives.)

Penelope un cuts her ties with the scissors while Eve and the police officer struggle.

Then it is her turn to face off with her BFF. The very pregnant Penelope uses a baby glitter cannon to her defense and shouts things like

“IT COULD HAVE BEEN A BOY!”

and

“DON’T MESS WITH A PREGNANT LADY!”

Three months later, Penelope and Richie have moved to a new home and love their new baby.

Eve is locked away in prison, and her cellmate is a pregnant woman who resembles Penelope.

Side Note

It’s another Lawerence family affair with Donna Lawrence appearing as Dr. Jones, Matthew Lawrence serving a Lifetime Hunk, and Andrew Lawrence directing!

The Bluetooth speaker has a greasy thumbprint on it throughout the whole movie. DROVE ME WILD!

      1. Obsessed stalkers tend to be the better stories, I don’t like seeing toddlers or pregnant women in danger.
