Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Two influencers find themselves on a luxury cruise through the Caribbean and South Pacific. But when their dream vacation turns into a nightmare, they’ll need to do whatever it takes to stay together… and to stay alive. Starring Katherine McNamara, Jasmine Sky Sarin, Eric Bruneau, Anthony Timpano and Armand Assante (2023).

Recap/Wine Thoughts.

The movie starts as most Lifetime Movies do, a woman running for her life… in the woods.

Two weeks earlier, we get a stylized montage of social media pictures and hashtags. Then we cut to a club in Montreal in 2016. Chloe is a party girl who is OFF cocaine and trying to get her life back on the right path. Outside, a wannabe influencer named Melanie tries to sweet-talk the bouncer to get into the club. She sneaks around back and gets in through the service entrance.

Once inside, Melanie meets a handsome promotor/maybe pimp named Jules. He invites Mel to sit with Chloe in VIP and pitches that they both work on a cruise for him. He promises to take care of everything.

Chloe isn’t excited and rushes off when she sees a big man with a beard. A fight breaks out in the club, giving Melanie and Chloe a chance to jump into a limo and escape.

In the limo, Chloe and Melanie party. Then they take a selfie at sunrise and follow each other on social media. Melanie goes back to her job at a jewelry store. Chloe continues to hide from the bearded man; she owes him 40K and is in a bad situation. Chloe has to go on the boat and asks Melanie to join her. Mel agrees, but her dad is concerned!

The girls board the boat and go through security with diamond jewels on full display. They loudly talk about the likes they get on a recent post and get upgraded to a VIP suite in exchange for posting on socials. Chloe explains, “selling the fantasy” while they take pictures all over the boat. The girls grow close and share stories about their parents and past. Chloe, not surprisingly, had a bad relationship with her parents.

Meanwhile, Jules meets with a mob guy named Ernie in upstate New York.

The boat docks in NYC, and the girls use the time to take more social media shots and meet up with Jules. He introduces them to their clients, Sean and Carl. Sean is the shy one, and Melanie tries to bring him out of his shell with shots. The plan works, but she pays the price later when vomiting in the bathroom.

Melanie also becomes an influencer after hanging out with Chloe. She is excited by all the attention. She continues to do activities with Sean to try and get him to open up, and he shares that he isn’t interested in social media; he likes real-life experiences. They totally hook up.

Chloe isn’t as interested in Carl and feels like he is a creepy dude. She also thinks Sean’s no social media is strange and notices him dodging photos with Melanie while shopping in Mexico. Sean gets called away, and the girls follow him to see what he is doing. They end up surrounded by guys with machine guns and yanked out of their cabs. It is a cocaine den. (Where is cocaine bear, tho!)

Melanie highjacks a car to escape, and Sean explains they were almost kidnapped for blood diamonds. When they get back to the boat, Mel angrily packs her bags. Chloe cooly tells Mel that she tricked her and isn’t on the trip for clout; she needs money and must pay many “shady dudes!” Later, she apologizes and says she wants to be friends.

A suitcase full of cocaine is planted in their room, and the girl’s passports go missing. First, they put the cocaine in Jules’ room. Then they devise a plan to use social media/their cell phones to try and trick Jules, but it doesn’t work. He tells them that they will smuggle the drugs into New York for 50K… or else. Sean and Carl are in on it too.

Chloe starts doing cocaine and partying in a deep depression. Melanie tries to talk her out of it, but Chloe is sure that Mel will abandon her just like everyone else in her life has done. It is hard to keep the social media post going being hungover AF, and the cruise director becomes concerned that they aren’t promoting.

The boat ports in Tahiti, and Jules takes Melanie with him because he saw a text she sent Chloe about going to the police. They go to a boat event, and Melanie stands around tensely with her purse. Chloe isn’t brought along because she is too “fucked up.”

While downing martinis at the bar, Chloe sees a news story about a body found near Panama. It is Carl, and Chloe texts Melanie to warn her that she is in danger.

Here is where the woman was running in the woods. It is Melanie running for her life. She trips and falls, and Sean catches up to her. He gives her back her passport and a wad of cash to calm her down. Sean tells her that he is supposed to kill her, but he is going on the run and suggests she leave Chloe behind and do the same. He makes Melanie take a fake dead picture to send to Chloe so they can both get away.

Chloe receives the image and (rightfully) freaks out. She takes the cocaine and almost dumps it off the boat, but Melanie stops it. Mel tells Chloe they cannot go home again and must go on the run. Mel didn’t want to leave Chloe behind, but she should have because Chloe is a mess.

They arrive in Sydney and need to disembark. The girls try to ditch the bag of cocaine but can’t. Instead, they wear uniforms and try to sneak out of the employee exit with an Australian hunk. The van is searched by security, but before the guard can get to the cocaine bag, he is called away.

They are free! Chloe and Melanie toast with Champagne and takes selfies. The police bust into their hotel room and the police arrest them.

During interrogation, a lawyer advises them not to say anything and plead guilty. Now, we are doing a Broken Down Palace thing. They end up in jail. Melanie gets a call from Sean, and he admits that he was a spy and working to entrap Jules and Carl, but the plan backfires.

Chloe calls her mom and cries. The mother pretends to care and tells Chloe she loves her and will help however they can. (Which isn’t much!)

Melanie’s dad visits her in jail through the window thingy. She apologizes and cries but thinks that she has found herself. The end. Wow! Worst ending ever.

Oh, apparently inspired by true events.

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

Minority Report: Melanie, Carl, Cruise Ship Staff,

Also Known As: Sugar

This movie was a Lifeitme acquisition and doesn’t really fall in line with the empowerment of women that Lifetime movies typically go for. It felt more like a cautionary tale or fable that was very surface-level, commentating on social media culture for a bygone era.

No clue why is the movie was set in 2016; so random.

So many bleeped-out obscenities!
