Kate Burns is looking for the perfect match online when she swipes and meets Walker Stevenson, a wealthy jet-setting art dealer. After Kate falls for the dashing dealer, she learns Walker is a hustler who cons women out of their money. Now Kate plans for payback. Starring Lexie Stevenson, Greg Kriek, Katelin Chesna, and Skye Coyne (2023)
Recap/Wine Thoughts.
Eliza rushes into her home and frantically locks the door. She is on the phone with someone named Walker, who is helping her to safety. He also asks for a buttload of money.
Cut to Kate, who is swiping on dating profiles at work. (AKA, she’s me!) She stops on Walker’s profile and is interested because he is handsome. Kate has been through a breakup and is ready to start dating again. Walker asks Kate out on a date via the app.
Kate walks in on the date and sees Walker fighting with Eliza. He apologizes and explains that Eliza is his ex-girlfriend. Kate decides to stay and enjoy the date, even though it is CLEARLY a red flag. They agree that the most essential thing in a relationship is honesty. They kiss while Eliza watches from afar.
The next day, Walker sends flowers, and Kate is appreciative. She calls Walker to thank him, and he tells her he will be out of town for a few weeks but promises to take her out when he returns. They text back and forth while he is gone, strengthening the relationship.
After a month and another date where Kate and Walker talk about dogs, they become boyfriend and girlfriend.
Kate picks up Walker from the airport, and he carries a large painting. He acts as if he is being chased and tells Kate to drive. He explains that transporting the artwork is worth six million and is dangerous. Kate says she knows little about art but agrees to hide the painting until it is safe.
In the middle of the night, Kate sneaks down to peek at the painting. Walker catches her, shows her on his iPad, and asks her to trust him more.
Kate’s co-worker Viv has been skeptical of the relationship from the get-go and picks apart every detail of Walker’s story. Kate takes Viv on a dinner date to introduce her to Walker. Viv quizzes Walker about fake New York art galleries. Walker’s card is declined at dinner, and he explains the fraud protection triggered by his constant travel.
Later, in bed, Kate offers to let Walker borrow a credit card while he figures out his fraud issue. He suggests opening a joint account and a new credit card with a 30K limit. Then he kisses her on the cheek and goes to bed!!!!!
Viv shares her concerns about Walker being a liar. Kate has explanations for everything and isn’t seeing the red flags.
Walker shows up at Kate’s house with a black eye. He says he was attacked by art thieves looking for the painting. Kate wants to call the police, but Walker explains why that is a bad idea. Kate goes to the store to buy pain medication. (Walker is “allergic” to ibuprofen.) While she is away, he takes photos of her personal information.
Walker puts Kate in his will and then asks for more money after a hug. RED FLAG.
Kate and Eliza finally meet to talk about Walker. Eliza verifies that Walker is the real deal and a catch. Eliza is, of course, lying, and Walker is forcing her to say good things about him.
A police officer visits Kate and tells her she is a fraud investigator. Kate pulls up the new bank account she opened with Walker and sees that the card is over the limit. Walker is going around town saying he is her fiance. Kate shows the police officer the painting and is surprised to learn it is a fake and a bad one at that. The police officer asks Kate to go undercover and help catch Walker.
Kate talks to the bank, and they tell her that her personal information has been compromised. The date conversation about the dog and mother’s maiden name seems more dubious now.
Kate goes on a podcast and shares her story to help other daters. Walker watches the live feed while drinking bourbon in his hotel room. Kate holds up a picture, not realizing she is on an AUDIO MEDIUM, and tells listeners to stay away from him and that he must be stopped.
Walker calls and tells Kate that he is going to ruin her life. Viv is worried and offers to sleep over to help keep Kate safe.
Eliza stops by Kate’s house and says she “saw the podcast” and admits that Walker did the same thing to her. Kate tells Eliza that she isn’t afraid and realizes that Eliza is helping Walker when Eliza pulls out a butcher knife from her purse. Eliza tells Kate that Walker loves her and then slashes her arm.
They fight, and Kate knocks Eliza out with a blunt object; then, she grabs the knife and almost kills Viv, who is back to check in on her friend. The police officer is back and promises a police car will be posted out front to keep Kate safe, for REAL.
The police officer doesn’t last long and is taken out by a block of wood wielded by Walker.
Walker kidnaps Kate with chloroform and ties her up in a remote location. He tries to give her some water and tells her to be nice, but Kate spits the water back in his face. (Good for her!) He tells her that she has ruined his life and his con business. Walker holds Kate at Knifepoint, and she tells him that he is always one step ahead of her.
As Kate talks Walker up and strokes his ego, she works to untie her hands. Then she shares another con she can work with him. Walke considers it and makes a can of baked beans.
Viv realizes that Kate is gone and finds the police officer handcuffed to a bench. Viv calls Kate and tries to figure out where she is.
Kate frees herself and grabs a fire poker. Walker and Kate fight it out until the police arrive. Walker manages to get away. The FBI looks for him.
In the hospital, Kate reassures the police officer that she isn’t a total failure.
In a French art gallery, Walker meets another woman who will be his next mark. (Eyeroll!)
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Kate, man, what a dumb character!
