Synopsis (via Lifetime)

When ghostwriter and aspiring comedian Aubri Wilson (Paniz Zade) is placed in charge of the Christmas variety show, she worries she might not have what it takes to pull off this make-or-break moment in her career. With Christmas just weeks away, Aubri is in pursuit of the perfect headliner for the event. That is, until famous Hollywood comedian Mike Baxter (Jake Epstein) returns to the comedy club that launched his career. There, Mike rediscovers his stand-up roots, and Aubri shows the world her inner funny girl, and as their journeys collide, they fall hopelessly and hilariously in love, laughing all the way. Mary Walsh, Ish Morris, Paul Constable and Candice Lidstone co-star. (2023)

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Audrey, a personal assistant/joke writer, goes to bat for Bella DelDamino, a Christmas Comedian/Diva. Bella has little patience for other people and only wants to perform at the Comedy Club. (Where allegedly John Candy performed at.) No one who performed at the club has returned to the Comedy Club because it hasn’t had an annual Christmas Eve Comedy Show/Festival in years.

The only funny person in this movie

Mike Baxter waltzes into the club and wants to perform to remind the industry that he is funny because he is only up for superhero roles now. (Rooster man?)

He’s baaaaaaacccck

Audrey works with her adorable little cousin, Ian; he tells her she is funnier than Bella and should perform. It has been five years, and Audrey hasn’t progressed much further in her comedy career. When Bella finds out about the Christmas Eve show reboot, she is distraught. Bella bombed at the last Christmas Comedy Show and has been crawling back to comedy success ever since.

Ian is hot

Mike sees Aubrey passing by a coffee shop and buys her a drink. They sit on a park bench, and he tells Audrey how lucky she is to write her jokes. Mike has been reading other people’s lines for years and hates being a celebrity. Aubrey tries out a few jokes on Mike, and he loves them. (Or he wants to sleep with her, more likely.)

Bella blows off the Christmas Tree lighting because it is too cold outside. Mike shows up incognito, AKA in sunglasses. Audrey is forced to take the stage in Bella’s place, and when she bombs, Mike takes the stage to help calm the crowd who hate her. Do they have banter that is supposedly better? It isn’t. They drink a green drink together when the Christmas tree is lit. (It looks like Slimer HiC in a bottle.)

This drink was so prominent for no reason

Ticket sales for the Christmas Eve show are lagging. Mike works on a song on his guitar, and his sister loves having him back home. She tells him he should have a family of his own. Their heart-to-heart is interrupted by Mike’s agent, who wants more “viral” moments like the tree lighting. (BUT WHAT HAPPENED AT THE TREE LIGHTING?!?!?!?!) Mike decides to raise his profile and get more views.

What was this agent even talking about?

Bella is set to be the town Mrs. Claus but backs out when Santa gets stuck in traffic. Audrey recruits Mike to be Santa, and she fills in as Mrs. Claus. It is pointless.

Afterwards, Mike asks Audrey to do a set with him and work on jokes together in exchange for her helping him get more viral social media moments.

They go to a fancy dinner, where Mike talks about how he became famous on “Saturday Sketch Show” and wanted to be taken more seriously, so he did a bunch of indy flicks but now wants to get back to comedy. (So he is Adam Sandler?)

Audrey holds auditions for the comedy club. We get a super unfunny montage!

The new acts don’t go over well, so Mike takes the stage with his guitar. He goes fully Adam Sandler’s “The Chaunkah Song.” and sings a song about Christmas liqueurs. Then he goes into a wrap about a fake Christmas Tree or a real one. It goes instantly viral.

There is a scene with a REALLY green couch. (Like Nickelodeon slime.)

So GREEN?!?

Mike takes Audrey out for a Christmas stroll. The LAUGH, like this movie’s title suggests, so… that is good. They continue discussing Mike’s career and a “social media storm.” Audrey asks Mike to be the headliner for the Christmas Comedy Show.

Mike gets the part of Rooster Man, but he seems to have to head back to LA immediately. Leaving the Comedy Club without a headliner. Mike’s agent won’t take no for an answer and books a flight to come get Mike himself.

A Snowball Social happens for some reason, and Audrey dresses up as a slutly nutcracker. Bella shows up to announce Mike will be headlining. Bella steals Audrey’s thunder and sucks up all the oxygen in the room.

In the next scene, he is there to pick Mike up. He tells Audrey and her cousin that Mike is leaving, but I can’t understand what this guy says because he is a marble mouth. Mike tries to explain it to Aubrey, and she feels betrayed.

Audrey takes the stage as the headliner for the well-attended Christmas show. Her jokes aren’t good and mostly about how much she hates her mother and health insurance. Then Audrey notices Mike Baxter isn’t on a plane to LA but in the audience. She ends her not-funny set and asks him why. He makes some jokes, and they banter together on stage. (Since she couldn’t be funny on her own!)

She can’t even do a full set without Mike chiming in

UGH! I HATE THIS MOVIE.

Mike passes on Rooster Man and pitches Audrey to his agent. To do what exactly? I’m not sure, write jokes? Mike asks Audrey to be his opening act.

12 months later, they are back at The Comedy Club, where she watches him sing his guitar songs from the audience. Cool. Cool.

My boyfriend is HILARIOUS

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

Wow, I couldn’t have hated this more.

Not only did she find love at Christmas, but she also found love with a man who would let her be his opening act, awww?

I usually love Jake Epstein. He was charming here as usual, but not charming enough to make this worth it.
