When Jessica is falsely charged with the murder of her best friend’s husband, she escapes from jail and goes on the run with her husband Matt in an attempt to clear her name but untangles a deadly web of lust and deceit that leads directly to those she trusts the most. Stars Brianna Cohen, Jonathan Stoddard, and Harley Bronwyn (2023).
Recap/Wine Thoughts.
Jess is a perfectionist. She owns a cake business with her friend Lori. The little bakery is a success and gaining the interest of investors. Lori mentions, as a joke, that her husband Robert is having an affair with his assistant, but is he?
It’s Robert’s birthday, and he seems more interested in Jess’s boobs than cake. Lori definitely notices her husband’s wandering eye. Jess asks her husband, Matt, if he noticed anything off, and he tells her that the friends were just drunk.

Jess wakes up; she isn’t happily married; she is in prison?!!? Someone murdered Robert and framed Jess. Jess maintains her innocence, and Matt works with a PI to clear her name, but he is giving up. Matt wants to sell the house and move out of state.

While picking up trash on the side of the road, Michelle Jess’s cellmate breaks free and takes out the guards. Jess and Michelle make a run for it and steal the sheriff’s van. They ditch the van quickly and run into the woods. Jess comes upon a horse stable and steals some cash and a BIG FOPPY HAT. (Making her not so anonymous.)

The movie shows, through flashbacks, the court proceedings of the murder trial. They are pretty boring!
The news of Jess’s escape from prison goes to the press, and Lori seems worried about it. Detectives question Matt, who tells them he hasn’t heard or seen Jess. (Even though she has been lurking outside the house and sneaking in to get clothes.)
Michelle is caught and refuses to talk to detectives. Except for telling them that the killer is always closest to home, implying Matt killed Robert and framed Jess.
Finally, Jess emerges from where she is hiding in Matt’s house and lets him see her. He tells her that he is happy to see her and hugs her. Matt asks her to trust him, and then he almost calls the cops on her but changes his mind.
More flashbacks happen, and we learn that Jess knew about Robert’s extramarital affairs, even catching him hitting on a cocktail waitress.
Matt takes Jess to a cabin that belongs to Lori. When Jess is surprised he has a key, he explains that he has been helping Lori sell the place since Robert died. Jess doesn’t do a good job at laying low and runs into a neighbor named Jim, who is suspicious of her. Matt suggests hiding out at an old abandoned sheriff’s station.

Jim turns out to be a sexy cop, so things aren’t looking great for Jess and Matt’s plan.
Jess keeps rehashing her memories of Robert, Lori, and them with Matt, and he seems annoyed. Matt loads Jess up on wine so he can privately talk with Lori and tell her what is happening. Jess wakes up and overhears their conversation. The following day, Jess demands to know how long he has been having an affair with Lori. Matt admits to a month-long affair. Matt tries to grab Jess, but she smashes his head and runs for it.

Lori shows up and sees Matt in bad shape. She didn’t get the memo that Matt doesn’t like her and Jess didn’t kill Robert. Lori grabs a candle stick and knocks Matt out. Then, she chases after Jess.
Detectives track down Lori’s vacation property and head up to the cabin.
Jess goes to the neighbor’s house for help. He keeps Jess talking and grabs his gun. Jess frantically tries to explain to him what is going on. Then she screams at him to listen to her, but it is too late. Lori stabs him in the back.

Lori tells Jess how she planned the murder and framed her for the crime. It was so easy! (We see the murder through a flashback because this movie LOVES them.)
Matt shows up and distracts Lori just long enough for Jess to grab a frying pan and knock her ex-bestie with it.
Jess makes a run for it, but Lori runs after her and almost strangles Jess to death. The detectives pull Lori off Jess and take her away. The detectives work to get Jess some trauma therapy.

Lori heads to prison as Jess rides off into the sunset to freedom.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
I like many of the actors in this one, but the whodunnit was not a mystery. We all knew when Lori had that knife at the top, right?
