Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Bri is recently divorced and under house arrest due to her ex-husband’s crimes, but when a stalker shows up, seems to have control over his surroundings. Novi Brown, Terrell Carter, Kimberly Daugherty, Christopher Bencomo, Malcolm Goodwin, and Krys Marshall star (2024).

Recap/Wine Thoughts.

A fabulous jogger walks through the woods in her burgundy singlet jogging outfit. She chats on the phone. She is having a good day until a creepy hooded and masked figure grabs her and drags her away. None of this happens in the dark, as the title promises! Cut to a missing poster of Cheyenne Clark posted on a tree in a beautiful mountainous lake town.

Bri Collins lives in the same town and is under house arrest in her multimillion-dollar lake house home. Her lawyer friend gives some context, and we learn Bri is serving a year for embezzlement. Michael, Bri’s ex-husband, is putting time in jail.

The days tick by (on an actual counter seen on screen.) Bri is feeling restless and ALONE. Her parole officer, Nancy, checks in occasionally and suggests Bri take up a hobby rather than drinking her ex-husband’s wine collection.

The house is a smart home, and Bri isn’t a fan. While bathing, she hears something in the house and heads downstairs in her towel to find a lamp knocked over and a broken photo. Bri calls her friend/lawyer, Sofia, and she calls a detective friend to check things out. The home has no cameras despite everything else being automated. The detective isn’t helpful and judgemental of Bri and her criminal past.

Sofia stays over and helps Bri drink wine while they burn pictures of Michael in the backyard fire pit. Someone takes Polaroids of them and tapes the photos to Bri’s window. Sophia tells Bri to hire a private security guard to give Bri piece of mind.

Enter Xavier, security extrodianer, who eats apples with a pocket knife. After learning who he will work for, he denies the offer. Bri doubles the offer to get him to stay. She tells him that her husband was using her to falsify records without her knowledge. Xavier is intrigued and promises to keep her safe, but he seriously doubts Michael is involved.

He doesn’t do a great job because Bri drives in a speed boat, and it catches on fire. Bri falls in, and Xavier has to jump in and rescue her. He determines that the fire wasn’t an accident.

Michael is out of jail early for good behavior and makes a visit to see Bri. Breaking the terms of his parole. Bri accuses him of stalking her, and he flatly denies the allegations. Then, he suggests she is an alcoholic before telling Bri he is trying to move on with his life.

That night, Bri is attacked in her home, and Xavier feels like a failure. (Or does he?? He eats his apple smugly with a pocket knife when Bri leaves.) He also is keeping the fact that Cheyenne Clark is his sister.

Dex, a techie or actress who is really good at rattling off tech jargon, is brought on board to help hack into the home security and deactivate her ankle monitor without being detected. Bri sneaks over to Michael’s house with Xavier to steal security footage. They find Michael shirtless (he has a great body!) with another woman in his bed. Michael almost catches them, but her gets distracted by an argument with his lady friend.

After making a clean getaway, Bri and Zavier have a sexy time.

Michael gets hit by an RV while jogging. (Xavier happens to drive an RV!!!!)

Bri goes through Xavier’s things and finds polaroids of Cheyenne Clark. She kicks him out and fires him as a security and a lover! Xavier pleads with her not to send him away; he says he is close to solving the case. (This scene is so subdued. It may be the calmest breakup ever on Tubi/Lifetime.)

Sofia comes BACK over, and they call the detective to fill him in on what is happening. Then Sofia and Bri are knocked out and tied up by the masked/hooded figure.

Hot cops question Michael, and he tells them that he has already talked to the detective. The hot cops don’t know who Michael is talking about because Detective Joe isn’t a detective!

Not-Detective-Joe tells Bri that he killed Cheyenne. He plans to kill Xavier to tie up loose ends. Bri is just a victim of circumstance? He puts on a LAME song and goes to shoot Bri, but she round-kicks him and hits Joe with a high heel.

They run into the backyard and do jujitsu until Bri kills him with her bare hands.

Sofia and Xavier survive and keep Bri company while she serves out the remainder of her house arrest. (She is still drinking wine, which is good for her.) Bri wonders WHY her, and it all feels unfinished.

Bri watches security footage repeatedly, wondering how Joe got access to the house. He had to have had an accomplice. Someone who knew Bri was a sitting target needing a security guard. Sofia.

Bri confronts Sofia and accuses her of using Joe for her own revenge. Michael was having affairs with multiple women, including Sofia. (Which is how she had access to the smart home.) Sofia had Cheyenne killed to keep Michael to herself. Bri was the final roadblock keeping Sofia from Michael. The whole conversation is recorded with Bri’s ankle monitor.

The police and Xavier rush in and arrest Sofia. Who doesn’t even seem to care she is being taken to prison?!

Bri buys her own place with Xavier and runs on the same Path Cheyenne ran on. Full circle. Good for them!

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

This movie initially aired on Tubi in 2022. Lifetime seems to have used it as filler for the 2024 season.

The pacing could have been faster on this one. There is lots of pausing between dialogue.

Thanks for bearing with me this week! I moved this weekend and have been feeling tummy sick due to a caffeine OD and haven’t fully recovered!

  1. 12 min in I was actually lovng this. Finally a heroine who doesn’t yell “Anyone there?!”, keeps legit non-lethal protection at the ready and can handle her own. And she seems so normal. Look at Lifetme(oh yeah…Tubi), hiring actors/actresses who seem like normal people.

The ending though. I realized who the first baddie was 3/4 in and suspected the 2nd one just a tad earlier.
But what the heck was their motive for trying to kill Xavier? I was confused by that part.
