Synopsis (via Lifetime)

When a mother convicted of a horrible crime is released from prison, she’s determined to find out where her child vanished to while she was away. But when her journey leads her down a winding path that puts her life in danger, she realizes that finding the truth might come at the cost of her freedom. Stars Sarah Smyth and Catherine Lough Haggquist (2024).

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Catherine has just been released from prison and is on parole. She was put away 12 years ago and charged with manslaughter of her son. Catherine stays at a halfway house, and Natasha shows her around. Catherine will fit right in because her cellmate, Abby, is also there.

The trouble is Catherine doesn’t remember the night she is accused of killing her son like at all. She goes for a jog to clear her head, ends up in her old neighborhood, and sees her ex-husband, Matthew. Catherine screams, “I’m NOT a Monster,” before running off.

Someone breaks into the halfway house and plants stolen jewelry in Catherine’s things. The parole officer gives Catherine her first strike. Someone is trying to send Catherine back to prison.

Catherine and Abby track down the parents of an old friend named Stephanie. (who testified against Catherine in the trial.) The parents block a photo in the entryway and are cagey about the details of Stephanie’s whereabouts. When Catherine leaves, they call the cops, which is strike 2.

Matthew visits Catherine and tells her that she needs to leave Stephanie and her family alone. Stephanie is divorced from her husband, Rob, and wants to be left alone. Catherine listens to Matthew and decides to catfish Rob on a dating app instead. She needs to get information about the night she can’t remember!

Catherine has a breakdown, remembering the night she passed out in the car and lost her son.

Rob meets his date and is surprised to see Catherine. He is not phased and hopes to get laid, so he opens up. Rob tells Catherine that Stephanie had a miscarriage, and it ruined their marriage. Then he makes a pass at her, and Catherine laughs it off.

Catherine continues to get bullied and has her room ransacked by other ladies in the halfway house. To get some fresh air, Abby and Catherine go back to Stephanie’s parent’s house to break in and see what was in that photo the parents were trying to hide. (Is it extreme? Yes. Does breaking and entering violate their parole? Yes. The alarm goes off, and they get scared away.

This movie is dragging, but Catherine is starting to regain her memory—or at least she is putting the pieces together. (I’M GLAD SOMEONE IS!) She talks to Rob and smacks the shit out of him. Rob admits that Stephanie stole the baby from the car and passed it off as hers.

The detective questions Matthew, and he almost strangles her with a phone charger but changes his mind and gives it to the detective. He also has Catherine’s phone.

Stephanie finally shows up and ties Catherine up. (Somehow, there are 30 minutes left in this movie.) Stephanie couldn’t take care of the baby and had to give him up to her parents. Catherine breaks free and knocks Stephanie out with a wrench.

The halfway house lady suddenly has a son and an accent? She keeps him hidden in a cabin. Oh and she is related to Stephanie.

Matthew is knocked out by Stephanie’s parents and dragged into the garage.

Everything comes out when the parents admit to everything to the detective. The police arrest them and find Matthew. He feels like a jerk for not believing his wife for all these years.

Catherine goes into the woods and finds the cabin where her son is being held captive. The halfway house lady gets out her shotgun and starts shooting at Catherine as she rushes to the house.

The police show up and take the halfway house lady away. Catherine reunites with her very confused son.

Instead of spending time with her son, Catherine talks on the phone and sums up the movie’s end.

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

Wow! I’m sorry to anyone who enjoyed this. This movie did not hold my interest in any way. Worst of the year so far.
