Astor is the arrogant son of a mega-rich mogul who is found dead inside a high-end hotel that his father has been planning to purchase. The hotel’s new Operations Manager, Zakiya, is quickly arrested for the crime. After being bailed out by her coworker, Harry, Zakiya sets off to find the actual killer and clear her name. Her search reveals everything from prostitution to sex crimes and even murder–mostly within the confines of the hotel. As Zakiya closes in on the culprit, Harry suddenly dies under mysterious circumstances. Unwilling to believe that healthy Harry died of a heart attack, Zakiya realizes she cannot trust those closest to her, especially her boss, Steve. Now, Zakiya must use her knowledge of the hotel and sharpened people skills from working in hospitality to find the real murderer and uncover exactly who is behind the prostitution ring. Starring Samantha Walkes, Karen Cliche, Tim Campbell, and Morgan Kelly (2023).
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts in a hotel room. It seems like someone has murdered a prostitute. (I hate when that happens! Julia Roberts would never!)
Three months later, Zakiya is the hotel manager and helps the owner and his new wife check in for a VIP stay. The hotel is kind of falling apart. People are getting murdered and leaving upper-deckers. It is also a place for hookers! Astor Brant, AKA Mr. Money, checks in with a 19-year-old sex worker. Zakiya is a stickler for the rules and is upset with the hotel’s fall from its previous prestigious reputation.
Zakiya works so often that she stays in a hotel room herself. While she is getting ice, she runs into Mr. Money shirtless and chugs bottles from the minibar. (Is everything alright, Zakiya?!?!?) The following day, Mr. Money has Zakiya change his sheets, and she notices blood. Then, later that night, Mr. Money’s 19-year-old rushes downstairs with bruises around her neck before he comes running after her. Zakiya follows them and keys into the room, finding Mr. Money screaming at the 19-year-old with a gun pointed at her. He claims they are role-playing, and it is so wild Zakiya quits on the spot.
Detectives visit Zakiya the next day because the 19-year-old has turned up dead. Steve, the head of hotel security, claims Zakiya took the gun from Mr. Money’s room, and he had no guests that night. Zakiya is banned from the hotel, but she tries to pull room information and get evidence from the laundry room. (IE, the bloody towels.) While looking in the laundry room basement, Zakiya finds a body and then is chased by a hooded figure. Zakiya is arrested in the lobby. Mr. Money is dead.
Zakiya is questioned by the Detective and shows her files about her troubled past in foster care. (Like it is some kind of motive?) The Detective has Inspector Gadget sunglasses that record conversations. Harry bails Zakiya out with his 401K.
Valeria, Mr. Money’s stepmother, picks Zakiya up and tells her that they need to keep Mr. Money’s reputation clean, and she asks Zakiya not to reveal the truth about the 19-year-old prostitute. Then Harry has a heart attack in the hotel. The hotel brand is slipping, it is a glorified brothel.
After Zakiya’s trusted co-worker Harry dies, she looks for a phone with evidence on it with a maid named Alexis. Alexis hits Zakiya with a vase and tells her that she has been working with Mr. Money’s dad to frame Zakiya and save the hotel’s reputation.
Zakiya tries to explain what is going on to Detective George. (I’m glad someone knows what is happening because I’m confused.) Her plan works, and Detective George invites Zakiya to spend the night at his place. Zakiya is impressed with his place and is surprised to learn that he is a father] They have some sexual tension and hook up. (This scene lasts probably 20 minutes, and it is so boring!)
Zakiya finally puts it together about a sex worker ring. What she doesn’t put together is that Detective George and Mr. Money’s dad served in the military together.
Suddenly, Zakiya is frantically looking at Detective George’s room while he fights with someone named Daniel in the living room. (No clue what is happening.) Zakiya pimps out the lights and blasts the music in the house to make an escape. She kills Daniel by throwing him down the stairs.
Detective George gives Zakiya his gun so she will trust him, and they go to the crime scene, and more talking happens. (I’m actually dozing off; this is so dull.) Zakiya wants to go to California, but Valeria will keep that from happening. So Zakiya has to stoop to her level and pose as a sex worker to incriminate Valeria.
Zakiya puts on a wig and red lip to convince Valeria she is serious. She even throws Detective George under the bus. I’m still trying to figure out what happened, but it was boring, and Zakiya got promoted because she is a problem solver. Good for her!
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Deadly Estate is not the correct title for this movie. Insert Hotel or Resort, perhaps?
This movie has been on Tubi since March 2023. They should have kept it there.
