I guess she is the stepmom and we’re not talking Julia Roberts here.

Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Izzy suspects foul play in her dad’s business as he declines rapidly, but nothing could prepare her for the deceit and danger she will uncover. Stars Lexi Giovagnoli, Lorenzo Lamas, Shelby Janes, Bri Ana Wagner and Milli M. (2024).

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Security camera footage records a janitor (with a solid beard!) cleaning up an office while whistling absent-mindedly before someone attacks him.

Cut to Izzy, who is doing a work presentation for Trusting Paws to a group of uninterested investors on a SATURDAY. (There is a rude ass woman in the front, and I can’t decide if she is iconic or the worst.) The presentation doesn’t go well, and Izzy rages out on the posterboard she made.

Izzy’s father, Jack, is a very successful businessman in town. He is celebrating 30 years in business and throwing a party. He goes through thank yous, but the speech is interrupted by a bout of freak momentary amnesia. (The moment doesn’t really read; it seems like the actor forgot a line.)

Izzy’s stepsister, Dana, is helping Jack with the books, and she says he hasn’t been keeping up with the books. (His memory is slipping.) She is also frustrated with her mother, Katherine, who may seem nice on the surface but is the STEP MOM FROM HELL? Jack asks Izzy to help with the business and put the dog start-up on paws… okay, pause. (I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist!)

Mrs. Darby, a business owner, spills the tea on things going down in the family business. Terri, the secretary, has been collecting rent in cash and pocketing the rental payments. Izzy looks into the books herself and sees some shady dealings. (The soundtrack here was really odd.) She also finds Dana and Terri secretly shredding documents on a Sunday!!!

Jack falls in the bathroom and seems disoriented. Izzy finds her father and screams for help. Katherine runs in, and instead of calling 911, she calls the family doctor. The doctor warns Izzy that her father could be showing signs of dementia and has suffered a few falls recently. (He seems genuinely concerned; Katherine, on the other hand, seems to be trying to cover something up. Could it be that she is… the Stepmom from Hell?)

Someone attacks Izzy in her ransacked apartment and drugs her. Izzy wakes up on the floor, and everything is in place. She just goes on with her day. She heads into the office and sees the town detective and ex-boyfriend named Brian Roman. (Who is a total dweeb!)

Jack is obsessed with cookies, and I think they are drugged. Izzy brings her concerns to Jack, who worries about when 700K goes missing. Jack tries to log into his account and can’t remember his credentials.

Katherine stays up late drinking a martini in her silk pajamas. I know she is the Stepmom from Hell, but it is kind of cool of her. The next day, Katherine fires the doctor when she finds out he has been talking about Jack having dementia. Then, she files a motion accusing Izzy of endangering her father and issues a restraining order.

Mrs. Darby, the baker, is murdered, and her bakery is exploded for the insurance money. The question is, who did it? Dana or Katherine?

Jack dies, and Katherine quickly shares the updated will; Izzy is out. Katherine is IN CHARGE OF EVERYTHING! Katherine starts liquidating everything and plans to move to Florida. (She also sends out funeral invitations, which is psychotic.)

Izzy has a Lifetime car breakdown.

At Jack’s funeral, Izzy speaks emotionally against Katherine’s wishes. Izzy accuses someone of murdering her father by positioning him. Then Izzy goes to her detective boyfriend and asks him for help. He gives her a hidden camera to get Katherine on tape.

Izzy sneaks into Katherine’s house and plants the camera but is interrupted by the doorbell. It is the doctor Katherine fired. The doctor talks with Katherine and shares his suspicions about abuses of the medications he subscribed to Jack, resulting in his death. Katherine pours him some tea and drugs the doctor before whacking him with a candle stick. (Izzy witnesses the whole thing, and so does the camera!)

Dana is the next to show up at the door and accuses her mother of financial crimes. Dana isn’t involved! She finds the doctor’s body and is horrified. Katherine explained to her daughter that she had done what she had to do because she was a single mother!!!!! Sometimes you have to make sacrifices in life, you know? Like stealing and murdering.

Terri, the secretary, knocks Dana out and has been helping Katherine because she felt unappreciated.

Izzy jumps out of the closet with a knife and runs upstairs to hide. She turns on a hot shower, so everything is all steamy. Then, the stepmother and daughter duke it out. Izzy tumbles down the stairs, and Katherine chases her with a knife. Izzy ends up stabbing Katherine dead.

One month later, Izzy also runs her father’s and the paws business! She is officially dating Detective Roman and is making amends with Dana.

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

It took four people to write this? Eeeeeeeeeee.

Katherine went from a zero to a ten on the evil spectrum. I wish the movie would have had more fun with her character.
