Synopsis (via Lifetime)

After waking from a car accident with total amnesia, Mia is taken home to be cared for by her loving husband and daughter. But as she recuperates, Mia has flashbacks of a second daughter–one who was in the car with her the night of the accident. But no one else believes this daughter exists. Stars Rayisa Kondracki, and James Gilbert (2024).

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie starts in a hospital, and we learn that famous romance writer Mia has been unconscious since her car crash. Mia has some gauze around her head but is otherwise in good shape—except for her memory, which is completely gone. The doctor does some quick exposition before introducing Mia to her husband, Jesse. (He gives her a heart pendant that has special meaning to them as a couple.) He also tells Mia that she has a teenage daughter named Madison.

Ever been an a car accident and looked this fab?

Mia’s family takes her home, and she gets settled in her home office. Things seem off to Mia, and she is surprised her book bio doesn’t mention her wife and child. Jesse tells Mia that she is a VERY private person and has no extended living relatives. The family also moves to a new town for each book Mia writes to “inspire” her. (It is all a little sketchy to me! Madison is obviously NOT Mia’s daughter and is sleeping with Jeff.)

In the middle of the night, Mia has a nightmare about the accident. A young woman, who isn’t Madison, is in the passenger seat. Jesse assures Mia that he was in the accident and that it is just a dream.

Everyone needs a superfan like Wade!

At physical therapy, Mia makes fast friends with her PT Erin. They talk about life and are surprised when one of Mia’s superfans accosts them on the street for a signature. He met Mia and her daughter the week before, but Mia was private about her personal details. Mia wants all the information and asks the superfan to bring her signed novels to her house.

Madison gets into NYU, and the family celebrates with ice cream. (Madison also buys a new coat with advanced money. Mia finds a safe in her closet and doesn’t know the code. Jesse tells Mia that he doesn’t know it either because Mia keeps her manuscripts in there.

Red car not pictured

A man in a red car has been following Mia around. Erin jokes that he is another superfan, but the man is a killer. The Red Car Man stakes out Mia’s house and kills the actual superfan in the middle of the street by throat slashing?!?!

Mia learns of her superfan’s death and decides to investigate by going to the world’s creepiest library I have ever seen. Mia finds her books and laughs at the cheesy cover before checking the dedication; the book is for “Angela.”

The Red Car Man follows Mia into the bathroom (Which is also extremely ugly.) He threatens Mia but is interrupted by Erin with pepper spray. Erin chases him out and gets The Red Car Man’s license plate. Later, Mia asks Jesse, and he admits that there is another daughter named Angela. Angela was dating a criminal and estranged from her family.

They did Erin dirty

Erin is apparently super horny and goes on dates. She meets with one of her boyfriends, who is also a private investigator, in an abandoned parking lot. They exchange information, and he is off, leaving Erin alone. The Red Car Man is there and attacks her. Erin tries to get away but is caught by Jesse. (He is working with the Red Car Man.) The next day, Mia’s PT appointment with Erin was canceled.

Mia tells Madison about Angela, and Madison decides to help her mom track down Jesse with the Find My iPhone app. It leads them to a barn where Angela is being held captive by the Red Car Man. Jesse is also there and tries to explain that things have just gotten out of hand and that it is all about money.

Jesse and the Red Car Man throw Mia in the trunk of the red car and drive her to the bank to withdraw all her money. While in the trunk, Mia finds Erin’s keys and uses them to pepper spray on The Red Car Man when he opens the trunk. Mia calls Madison and tells her to call the police before heading home to confront Jesse and save Angela.

Not the reunion they hoped for!

Angela is chained to a radiator, and when Mia jumps to untie her, Madison smashes Mia in the head with a baseball bat, unlocking all her memories.

We see Jesse running Mia and her real daughter off the road through flashbacks. Madison is there, too, and kidnaps Angela. Just as Jesse is about to explode the car with Mia inside, police pull up on the scene. Jesse has lied about everything.

Like, did they have to makeout so aggressively?

Jesse has a criminal history and met The Red Car Man in jail. Madison was a jail pen pal, and they concocted the whole scheme to get Mia’s money. He explains the entire thing before making out with Madison.

Angela and Mia grab a knife and cut themselves free. Mia grabs a gun randomly from that safe she couldn’t open before, and pistol whips Madison. Then she goes to find Jesse, and after a struggle over the gun, Mia beats him senseless with a laptop.

Glad that little necklace detail came back.

The REAL mother and daughter move out of the house and move on to the next town to write a new boo. Apparently, that weird detail was true!

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

This is a plot line that has been covered many times before, and this version adds nothing new.

Jesse gaslighted Mia in every scene they were in.

  1. What?! You didn’t like it? I thought it was pretty good and the twist with the “daughter” I almost didn’t see coming. On a side note though, the husband bore a strong resemblance to Bradley Cooper.

  2. I disagree with your last statement about this story adding nothing to it. The twist with the “daughter” was probably something that I would not have seen coming not in a million years. Your statement does perfectly describe the taken in plain sight movie as it had zero originality and was like every missing daughter movie.

  3. My running commentary after going against your advice to skip this. Why do those with amnesia never ever live in a town long, parents are deceased and no one else is around but the immediate family to vouch for them. I would need at least 10 people to vouch for me before I went home with a family I don’t remember. I am glad I know a plethora of people. Once we knew 1 was in on it, I kind of figured the other one was too. But I have to say there were some twists I really didn’t see coming. R.I.P. physical therapist. Question-how did her private detective disappear so quickly, so as not to be around to help her?

  4. I thought this movie was pretty fun to watch! And for a lifetime movie jeeze a lot of people died lol. Not your average lifetime flick which I kinda liked.
