In order to earn her trust fund, Evie (Cole) is tasked with granting Christmas wishes to the people who saved her life on the night of her birth. To aid in her cause, she employs Kyle (McGarry), a handsome local attorney, to track down those who helped and attempts to secretly learn what they might want while maintaining her anonymity. With Christmas fast approaching, the heiress and the attorney can’t resist falling for each other’s charms as they ramp up their gift giving efforts. But as time ticks down, will she be able to accomplish the mission and grant all of the wishes by Christmas Eve?
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Did the movie start in the 90s? A pregnant make up sales woman talks to her baby in the car about her plans and goes into labor. It is a snowy night, and the woman, Elizabeth, pulls into a diner where a town council meeting is being held. Lucky for Elizabeth, the town doctor is there! She births that baby right in the diner. The baby’s name is Evie Lane, and after she is born and chillin, the town council takes some Polaroids with the baby. Then the doctor says they need to get to a hospital ASAP, and the baby receives emergency surgery.
At present, Elizabeth is the CEO of Lane Cosmetics and retells the story in front of a large crowd at a makeup convention. Elizabeth calls Evie on stage and preaches about female business owners. After the event, Elizabeth tells Evie she is spoiled and a nepo baby. Before she starts her fashion line, Evie has to find the people in the Polaroid from the night she was born. Evie has to find and thank the people undercover in the town where she was born before Christmas, or she won’t get her trust fund. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!
Evie, now going as Mary, checks in at the local B&B, and DOLORES DRAKE is the owner! (Love her!) She encourages Mary to sign up for some Christmas-themed events, but Mary/Evie is unimpressed. She takes selfies on the sidewalk before going to the diner where she was born. The townspeople think Mary is a tourism influencer.
Mary/Evie meets with the only lawyer in town, Kyle Newman, who is the town’s most eligible bachelor. (They had a contest.) They meet while he coaches kids’ hockey; his office is also in the rink food court. She shows him the picture and asks Kyle to help her find the people in the diner photo to fulfill their Christmas wishes… monetarily. Kyle is confused by Mary/Evie’s generosity and doesn’t understand what is in it for her. He declines her as a client, and she tells him everyone has a price.
Inexplicably, they go shopping and talk all about themselves. Evie/Mary “dresses down” to fit in more, and Kyle invites Mary/Evie to dinner at the diner as a work meeting. I guess she is his client now, after all. Mary/Evie meets the diner’s owner, and he is the same one as when she was born. He spills the whole story and even sits down in the booth. (Like, get to work, buddy!) Mary/Evie leaves a $100 tip.
The next day, Kyle takes Mary/Evie to the Christmas festival, and Kyle volunteers Mary/Evie to be Santa’s elf with Kyle. Roy, who runs the festival, was also at the diner. Mary/Evie has met two of them and can make their wishes come true.
Mary/Evie comes clean to the diner owner after he tells her she looks just like her mother. He also suggests Kyle should know the truth about who she is and why she is in town. Mary/Evie doesn’t want to think about that and brags about her unlimited bank funds. The diner owner gives Mary/Evie back her $100 and tells her that she gets free meals for life.
Kyle calls Mary/Evie and rushes her out of the house, and she rushes to meet him. Lucky for her, she backs into traffic without looking and meets the Sheriff while on the phone. When Mary/Evie doesn’t show her license, she is arrested. Kyle bails Mary/Evie out, and they talk to the Sheriff as they do community service. Mary/Evie learns that the Sheriff wants her legacy to live on, so Mary/Evie decides to build a memorial to her.
Elizabeth calls her daughter and says cliche phrases about the true gift of giving and stuff like that. Mary/Evie is all like, “BUT MY TRUST FUND!!!!” and (of course) Kyle overhears and is onto her true intentions.
ROMANTIC ICE SKATING LESSON HAPPENS. Mary/Evie comes clean about who she is and why she is in town. (To get her trust fund.)
Kyle takes Evie back to Roy and tells him about his Christmas wish to be fulfilled by a “Secret Santa.” He wishes for a new fire engine for the town.
The Diner Owner wants to throw a birthday party for Evie to bring everyone, including Elizabeth, back together; that is his Christmas wish. (His real wish is to spend the holidays with his estranged son. Who they find and turn out to look like Shia LaBeouf.)
Elizabeth returns to town and is surprised to see her daughter succeeding at something.
Kyle’s dad was the one who took the photo, so Evie and Elizabeth decided that Kyle should get his dad’s Christmas wish.
The birthday party at the diner is underway, and we get the final few Christmas wishes completed. The doctor gets job applications to find her replacement so she can retire. (Rude!!!) Everyone cheers and is happy, especially Evie, who will get her trust fund!!! She plans to do more acts of kindness with all that money!
Evie asks Kyle what his Christmas Wish is, and he wants to go to dinner with her. Not a working dinner. Ewwwwwwwwww. They kiss. The end.
Oh, everyone recreates the photo 35 years later.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Mary/Evie sucks! (Taylor Cole is probably cool IRL.)
