In the lead-up to Christmas, emergency room doctor Hannah Michaels (Canning) juggles her demanding job and a budding romance with EMT Wes Sullivan (Blain) in Philadelphia. They spend time together as Wes helps her become more acquainted with the sights, sounds and tastes of Philadelphia, it’s clear that they’re starting to fall for each other. As the local First Responders balance duty with holiday celebrations, they come together to face challenges, support each other and find moments of joy. Features a cameo appearance by Donna Kelce.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts in the most chill ER I’ve ever seen. Hannah is an ER doctor and takes the lead on a Christmas patient. We see no surgery, no blood, just the monitor beeping. Paramedic Wes helps Hannah with her patience, and she thanks him before leaving for the night.
Hannah roams Philly, watching everyone enjoy the holiday season except her. She has got to rest before her next shift on Christmas Eve. Hannah’s neighbor insists that she eat some manicotti. (You know, the national dish of Philidelphia.) Hannah’s dad was also a doctor in Philly and is thrilled his daughter is following in his footsteps.
Wes, the EMS, is a staple in the community, showing rookie Julia the ropes. Their boss, Fire Cheif Anderson, wants the night off to see his kid’s Christmas recital.
Police officers Sanjay and Danielle used to date. They have some witty banter. Danielle is Wes’s sister.
Hannah is back in the ER taking care of patients. She can relate to the ones who are feeling lonely for the holidays. Hannah wants to help the patients more but can’t make them take her medical advice. Wes brings in another patient and is impressed with Hannah’s bedside manner. He invites her to get a Philly Cheesesteak with him and other EMS workers.
Wes and Hannah decorate the house of a fallen firefighter with Christmas lights, and Hannah compares untangling them to sewing sutras, her favorite thing. Wes shows Hannah around Philly and is a REAL hometown boy. He offers to help Hannah get settled and even decorate her condo for Christmas.
ER Nurse Kate has a daughter in the service and is having a rough time without her daughter being home for Christmas.
In between saving lives, Hannah finds it challenging to keep up with her social life and accidentally stands Wes up for a date. Wes is obviously understanding and not even mad. They promise each other to focus on a better work-life balance. They get a Philly Cheesesteak from Donna Kelce.
The fire station holds a BBQ outside and stations the karaoke station. Nurse Emerson takes over and sings into the night. Hannah and Wes make plans to spend Christmas together and hold hands. Then a call comes into the fire station, and they are separated again.
Nurse Emerson is upset because her daughter won’t be home for Christmas, but her coworkers all planned a surprise! They sneak Chloe into Exam Room 3, and it is lovely.
On Christmas Eve Day, Wes serenades Hannah with some acapella Christmas Carols. He invites her to join them at the community center to be the 4th member of the quartet. Their harmonies are wonky at best, but good for them!
OH wow! We have a fire budget!!! An actual Christmas emergency happens, and all units are called to respond. The Chef goes in and gets caught in a backdraft or something. Wes runs in to rescue him, and I haven’t been this nervous since Jack ran into the house after he caught fire in This Is Us. Wes saves the chief with no gear on, and they are both rushed to the hospital.
Hannah works on the chief, but he doesn’t make it. RIP. Just kidding, he is fine! It is Christmas, after all. This part really felt like an episode of Grey’s.
Wes and Hannah sit outside and get some fresh air. Hannah thanks him for making Philly seem more like home. They makeout and then Hannah is called to another emergency.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
I don’t think I’ve ever had mannacotti.
I loved the message of helping others during the holidays. It is so simple but refreshing to hear in these Hallmark movies.
Feeling down during the holidays is normal; if you aren’t feeling well emotionally, talk to someone who will listen.
