Emily (Lawson) has always dreamed of creating the perfect Christmas, meticulously planning every detail year after year, only to feel like she’s falling short. Hoping to bring her family closer together, she makes a wish for a holiday as picture-perfect as the ones she sees in a made-for-TV holiday movie. To her shock, Sugarplum (Parrish), the film’s relentlessly optimistic main character, magically steps off the screen to make Emily’s wish come true — whether she’s ready for it or not. As Sugarplum applies her movie-world rules to real life, Emily gets caught up in the possibility of finally achieving the flawless family Christmas. But when Sugarplum’s magical fixes start to backfire one by one, Emily begins to question what an ideal holiday really is. With time running out, Emily and Sugarplum find themselves on a heartwarming adventure – one that might just amount to an entirely different kind of Christmastime perfection.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The Harmony Channel is airing its hit holiday movie series Sugarplummed. Viewers can win a home decorated for Christmas!
Emily raises her musician daughter, architect husband Ben, and TikTok wannabe Son, Max. Emily is very Type A and wants to plan the perfect Christmas. She has a very reasonable list, but her family can’t find time to get together. Emily’s work life could be better; her assistant watches Christmas movies instead of working. Emily thinks the movies are silly and tells her assistant the movie rules. Jessica tells her boss to live in the moment and try not to be so perfect.
Emily’s mother collected Christmas ornaments. They are accidentally delivered to her home instead of her work. When she went to pick up the box, all the directions fell to the floor. Emily up a star that said to grant a wish, and Emily wishes for a Sugarplummed Christmas. Lights start flashing, and Sugarplum comes out of the computer screen and into real life. Emily is convinced she is having a nervous breakdown, but when the janitor sees Sugarpummed too, Emily is very worried.
Sugarplum has a book of rules and is sure that the Christmas movie rules apply in real life, too. She goes by Sue and pretends to be Emily’s college friend who is staying over for the holidays. Emily’s family thinks Sue is over the top, especially when she decorates their home. Sue is surprised that the decorators charge and sells some jewelry to pay for the decor cost. The decor company posts Emily’s house on social media and it gets entered in the Harmony Network’s home decor challenge.
Emily’s assistant is out of town for the holiday, so Sue fills in for her and helps with a pitch. The seller and buyer are at each other’s throats but fall in love with each other’s ideas for the Ski Lodge and fall in love with each other. Emily is impressed, and Sugarplummed thinks it is just a normal day.
To win a coveted pair of headphones Emily has tried to get for her daughter, Sugarplummed enters a holiday competition. She crushes the competition and gets Nina’s perfect Christmas gift.
Sugarplum volunteers to go to Max’s school for Career Day. As Sue Garplum, she tells the high schoolers that she has never had a career. Well, she has had holiday jobs before. Rebecca makes fun of Max for bringing a weirdo to school. Sugarplum pulls out a snow globe and says whoever holds it, snow will happen where they are. Max shakes the snow globe, and it snows in the school. They have an impromptu snowball fight.
While trimming the tree, the power goes out, and that is where things start going wrong. The rules aren’t working out as they should; they are backfiring. Emily’s clients aren’t in love; the buys are actually demoing the whole lodge. A handsome stranger gives Sue a summons for cutting down a neighbor’s tree. Then, Sue is arrested by the police, brought in for questioning, and then thrown in jail for vandalizing the school. (Max also gets suspended.)
Emily goes to the station to get Sue out and uses her real-world laws to break out her friend. The Christmas magic is fading, and Sugarplum is worried that she will be stuck in the real world. Emily will have to use her real-world skills to win the TV contest and go overboard to make everything perfect for the camera crew.
That plan backfires, too, and Emily’s family turns on her and accuses her of doing all the Christmas stuff for herself, not for them. They storm off in a huff to Nina’s school recital concert thing without Emily.
Sue apologizes for messing up Emily’s Christmas, but it is exactly what she wished for. Sue doesn’t feel like she belongs anywhere and wants to help Emily fix her Christmas rather than get back in her movies. All Emily has to do is be there for her kids and be herself. She leaves the camera crews behind and rushes to see her daughter perform in the Christmas Eve Pagent.
Emily talks to Ben and promises to stop chasing perfection. He tells his boss to piss off for Christmas and promises to become his new competitor. Max’s video is posted online, and he gets a lot of social media klout.
Nina has cold feet and worries that she won’t be perfect enough to get a college scholarship. Emily gives her daughter a pep talk, and they all hug as a family. Sugarplum is so inspired that she uses a little Christmas magic to make the performance pop. Sugarplum and Emily watch from the wings while clapping off-beat. Nina gets a standing ovation.
All the side Christmas stories get wrapped up with a bow. Sugarplum thanks Emily for a wonderful Christmas. The imperfections make it’s own kind of perfection. The star glows and Sugarplum is back in the TV. Emily and Ben kiss under the mistletoe.
