When novelist Andrea (Sasha Pieterse) hints her upcoming book may be taking a heartbreaking turn, her fans begin protesting, demanding their favorite character doesn’t get killed off. Needing a haven where she can finish her novel, Andrea flees to her family’s farmhouse in the town of Wildwood. Much to her surprise, she ends up running into her ex-crush, Seth (Mitchell Slaggert), an artisanal woodworker who’s helping rebuild the town after it was nearly destroyed by a fire. It doesn’t take long for sawdust and sparks of romance fill the air once the two team up and work together to reignite the town’s Christmas spirit. Is this romance just a holiday fling that ends when her trip is over? Or can the two build a love that is made to last?
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Andrea Metcalf is the best-selling author of the Arrow series. In the final installment, Andrea kills off the protagonist, and the fans revolt. She and her manager/sister, Ella, plan a getaway to their grandpa’s cabin. Andrea heads up with a single bag of wine.
Just as she is uncorking the bottle, Andrea hears someone in the house and grabs a frying pan to protect herself. It is just the hot groundskeeper and her childhood friend, Andrea. He is shirtless and excited to have Andrea (and her sister eye-roll) in town for the holiday.
The next morning, Andrea is awakened by construction. She is severely annoyed that he is fixing her grandfather’s barn. A fire devastated the town, and almost 70% was affected. Seth’s family owns the local inn where the fire started, and most of the town lives on their property in RVs while the town is rebuilt. Ella sets up a book reading at the bookstore, which surprisingly survived to drum up goodwill. (Andrea has some lousy PR right now.)
Ella gets to town, and the book reading goes well. Ella asks if Andrea wants to reconnect with Seth, but Andrea definitely doesn’t. (Or, so she says.) Things need repair around the country home, giving Seth a reason to come around frequently.
The pushback from the book’s ending reaches a fever pitch, and the publishers want a rewrite due to the fan boycott. The vitriol online is particularly scathing.
Seth and Andrea spend most of this movie circling each other, trying to figure one another out without talking about their real feelings. Akio, one of Seth’s renters, complicates the matters because she is a single mother who Seth looks after, giving Andrea the wrong idea.
Andrea is surprised that Seth has read her books because he is not her target demographic. Seth works in the barn late into the night and shocks himself, working on burying wood with electricity. (This may have been how he burned the whole town down in the first place. He should probably stop doing that!) Andrea stays up with him to make sure he is okay.
They go for a night walk and get caught in the rain. I think the horny part is finally happening. It doesn’t FEEL very horny because there is too much talking. Way too much talking!
Sex does happen multiple times. They are consenting adults dating, and I’m not sure why it is such a huge deal. Andrea even spends the night, and Aiko comes by emotionally vulnerable at 1pm. It blows up into a huge fight.
We learn that Seth blames himself for the town burning down, which he kind of should. Andrea creates a festival of lights of her own and uses Akio’s art of kintsugi, taking broken things and making them pretty by showing their flaws. (Is this the second Christmas movie to talk about this in 2024?)
Andrea rewrites the ending to the story and the story of her life! She gives Seth a chance. Andrea goes by Andi and helps the town with her book proceeds. She also opens an art gallery, so sure! Whatever! Merry Christmas.
