Recap/Wine Thoughts

We will never know why this gas station has a card section!

1996 Cherry Hill, Ohio, a teen works late at night at a gas. It is pretty calm until two masked robbers come in with weapons. They shoot the sales girl point blank.

Cut to the present day. Rylee Kerrigan is a new lawyer working for Tucker Stackhouse’s practice in town. Outside the office, she meets a cutie IT guy, Scott, her new boss’s grandson. Rylee finds a photo in one of the case files and sees her mother pictured with a murder victim’s killer. The girl from the gas station was killed by her BFF Stephanie over a raise at work. She asks her mom, KWEWN Lindsay Hartley, and the mother thinks it is strange because the case has been closed for years. Rylee can’t let it go and asks her boss if she can look into the cold case.

Such great hair!

Dee Wallace shows up with fierce hair and plays a congresswoman who wants to overturn the wrongful convictions of criminals.

Cool shot

Rylee goes to the jail to talk to a woman, Stephanie Jefferies, who she believes was wrongfully convicted of killing the gas station teen. The convict doesn’t want to talk, so Rylee leaves. As she drives back from the prison, Rylee is driven off the road by a masked driver who runs her into a telephone pole. Lindsay Hartley is more adamant than ever about her daughter NOT looking into the case. Tucker compromises and asks his grandson, Scott, to help Rylee with her work.

This face is like, PLEASE CHILL DAUGHTER!

Next, Rylee talks to Peter, the other person convicted in the teen Linda’s murder. His weapon was used, and Rylee is convinced he framed Stephanie for the murder. When Rylee talks to Lindsay Harley, Lindsay Hartley tells her daughter to DROP IT!!!!!

Rylee doesn’t and works with Scott to track down a key witness named Barbara. Barbara is now a waitress who doesn’t want to talk and is straight-up rude. Barbara’s son Cody pulls up and has the same car that ran Rylee off the road. Rylee takes pictures and asks Scott to look into it. Rylee posits that Cody is Barbara’s and Peter’s son.

Hey, guys, you are still parked and should probs leave

Scott and Rylee go back to talk to Barbara, and she is even more pissed. It turns into a chaotic scene, and Barbara threatens to beat them up. As she is being dragged away, Barbara drops a bank transfer receipt. Rylee and Scott grab it and talk about it over dinner while flirting. Scott clarifies that he isn’t a freeloading loser; he lives with his grandfather while working remotely as an IT employee.

They really went and found a red marker to make DEAD stand out.

Rylee receives a threatening note. It seems similar to Lindsay Hartley’s thoughts on looking into the case. (Minus the DEATH THREATS!) The note doesn’t deter Rylee, who goes with Scott to talk with Stephanie’s parents. They want nothing to do with the case, which is understandable. They’ve written her off years ago. Stephanie’s Aunt, on the other hand, is willing to talk and reveals Stephanie was a wild teen and was pregnant with a little girl.

Lawyer up! Always Lawyer up!

Barbara is the number one suspect until she is the next to turn up dead! Rylee is questioned by police and should have known to ask for her lawyer immediately. (COME ON RYLEE!) Someone breaks into Rylee’s apartment and the firm. The death threat and Rylee’s laptop are stolen.

Like, they didn’t even kiss!

Scott spends the night keeping an eye on Rylee, and she opens up about her father’s death. It’s why she moved to the small town to be with her mother. Scott tells her his grandfather is already planning on giving her the practice. It would be romantic, but they get a call from a mysterious detective who says that Stephnie’s Aunt has also been murdered. #BuzzKill

Rylee gets a text from an unknown number from someone claiming to be a detective who wants to meet up in 30 minutes. Rylee goes home to change and realizes that the governor’s daughter resembles Stephanie. Just as she is piecing everything together, Rylee is abducted and tied up in the back of a car. Rylee drops her ring so Scott can find her.

Cody is the kidnapper and doing it all for money. (But who is paying him?)

Stephanie admits to giving up her baby for adoption with the help of her well-connected Aunt. That baby’s mother was DEE WALLACE! Stephanie confessed to the crime because someone sent her a note that they would kill her daughter.

Dee Wallace shows up at an abandoned carnival with her cronies. She admits to forcing Stephanie to admit to a crime she didn’t commit and going as far as she did to cover up the murder she ordered. Linda and Stephanie switched shifts that night. Stephanie was the intended target.

Scott tracks Rylee’s location and calls the cops. They rush to save her. Rylee fights off her killer until the police pull up and take him down.

Riley and Scott end up dating, and she stays in town to take over the practice.

Stray Thoughts

This is the second Lindsay Hartley movie of 2025! It’s only January. We are truly blessed.

Pretty elaborate plot, but the pieces fell into place neatly.
