Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Based on actual events. The lives of fitness celebrities Craig Titus and Kelly Ryan took a dark turn when they hired a young female assistant. Tory Trowbridge, Brock Yurich, and Paris Smith star.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Based on actual events that happened between 2005 and 2008.

I’ll spare you the multiple burned body shots

The movie starts off in the desert with a car on fire. Police rush to the grisly scene. Detective Wilson and Detective Mogg are on the case, and I hope they aren’t a big part of this movie because they are doofuses. The firemen put the fire out, and the detectives are nonplused to find a body in the trunk. (That we see MULTIPLE TIMES!) They also recover a partial license plate. The detectives go to the home of the owner, Craig Titus, and Kelly Ryan, the king and queen of the fitness world. They are surprised to find Kelly Ryan is alive.

These magazines cracked me up

Cut to a 2001 fitness competition. Where the men flex in little bitty speedos and the women do flips and TikTok dances? Craig and Kelly dominate their categories and are on the cover of many fitness magazines. They walk the red carpet for fitness events and seem like the perfect couple. Craig has a history of doping and selling drugs.

Melissa James is assigned to be Craig’s assistant at an event, and she fangirls over the power couple. Craig’s eye is instantly wandering. Melissa is a dancer and offers to help Kelly with her choreography. (Kelly doesn’t need help; she studied under Bela Karolyi.

The time jumping killed me

2003, Kelly and Craig move into a new place and unpack all their trophies. They are on their way to a full fitness empire. Things get weird, and it seems like a porno is about to happen, but thankfully it doesn’t

Cut back to 2005; Kelly and Craig don’t know anything about the missing car and suggest that Melissa James stole their car.

So 2000 and late

Two years earlier, Melissa James, low-key follows Craig and Kelly and stages a casual run in while wearing her most 2003 outfit. Craig and Kelly are excited to see their old event assistant, but surprisingly, Melissa declines their invitation to hang.

Kelly and Craig don’t seem like they are that fun to be around. He is raging out all the time and belittling Kelly. Kelly is micromanaging and all about their image. (This is pre-social media, so their image is literally in the press and public eye.) They are also competitive, and they get jealous when the other one wins.

After a loss, Craig slips back into his drug habit. He also starts messaging Melissa James behind Kelly’s back. He surprises Kelly and hires Melissa as their personal assistant. Kelly thinks it is weird and worries that Craig is replacing her with a younger model.

Kelly practices dance in the mirror, and Melissa helps her with cardio moves. Kelly actually starts to enjoy having Melissa around because Melissa worships her. Kelly’s paranoia gets to her, though, and she cry dances while picturing Melissa stealing her man.

Craig is known as the bad boy of bodybuilding, and he leans into that reputation, throwing wild parties at his Vegas home. At a toga party, Melissa asks Craig when he will train her, and they enjoy coked-up hookups.

They continue to party while Kelly is out competing on the fitness circuit. Kelly isn’t bringing home the gold anymore; she is slipping in the rankings and drinking to drown her sorrows. Kelly asks her friend Megan to look into Melissa’s past because she doesn’t trust her.

Craig regrets hooking up with Melissa and asks her to keep it a secret. Melissa feels like she is just doing Kelly and Craig’s grunt work. Melissa decides to leave to close her dance studio, and she worries that she is wasting her life away. To deal with her world-crashing dance, Melissa does a coke-fulled dance in her studio before closing it down for good.

Body builders gotta stay smooth!

Craig shaves his chest and is super annoyed when Melissa calls him. He cuts his chest and hangs up on her. Craig doesn’t want Kelly to discover what happened and tells Melissa to stop calling him.

Back in 2005, Detectives question Craig and Kelly and show them the burned remains in the trunk. They are not really cool under pressure. Their answers aren’t lining up. Kelly even fakes a leg cramp to get out of questioning.

Cut to two months earlier, Craig and Kelly bring Melissa back on as their personal assistant. Melissa is grateful to have a second chance and access to Craig and his drugs again. Kelly starts to suspect Melissa is stealing money from them, and Melissa has a history of credit card fraud.

Kelly tells Craig, and he promises to take care of things… right after flexing in the mirror. Later, they confront Melissa over dinner, and she doesn’t have much to say for herself. Melissa rushes off and packs her bag. Craig stops Melissa from leaving and puts her up in a hotel until he can get some real answers.

Melissa wants to go home and go to rehab, but Craig convinces Melissa that he thinks she is perfect and promises that Kelly will come around to like her.

The detectives are back and have incriminating footage from a Walmart parking lot. Kelly and Craig are seen filling the car with gallons of lighter fluid. The police search their home and find sedatives and a taser gun. The body in the toxicology report comes back with a lethal dose of morphine.

Craig and Kelly are a MESS after killing Melissa. We don’t see exactly what happened, but we see them duct-taping the body in the trunk. The couple acts so guilty when Megan and her husband stop by, and they raise major red flags. Megan checks on Kelly and tells them something is not right. Then Craig tries to explain why Melissa is gone and puts Megan in a chokehold, which freaks her out. On her way out, Megan’s husband finds the taser. Kelly and Craig give Megan a bag to take with her. Megan goes to the detectives and shares what she knows.

The movie goes back to Melissa packing her bags and shooting up heroin in her ankle. Kelly sees credit cards taken out, and Kelly snaps. They fight over a taser, and Craig body slams Melissa and repeatedly punches Melissa in the face. When Melissa fights back, Craig puts her in a chokehold, and she is out. Kelly and Craig give Melissa more morphine, and it is fatal. Then, they plot to get rid of the body.

Kelly and Craig are both arrested and served time in jail for their crimes.

STRAY Thoughts

The timeline jumping wasn’t my favorite. I also don’t think we need ALL of the gory details of the murder. Some things are better left to the imagination. Pretty Graphic dead body suff here

Brock Yurich was pretty good in this.

  1. I was rooting for Kelly and Ryan. Melissa stalked a married couple, had sex with a married man, was an.illegal drug user, stole from them … could she be any less sympathetic? I was hoping they’d get away with it.

  2. This was a movie that originally aired as one of those “new Tubi movies”(..along with sinister surgeon & a few others…)Lifetime/LMN disappointingly then ran them as “new movie premiere” when they’d been available on Tubi for months prior.
