Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Alana (Vale Cooper, Happy Face) became known as “Honey Boo Boo,” as the world discovered her and her colorful family.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie begins with the real Honey Boo Boo/Alana in a confessional stle video. She tells the audience they think they know her story, but they don’t!

Our Narrator

In 2011, Alana and Mamma June get ready for a pageant. Pumpkin and Jessica are Honey Boo Boo/Alana neglcted sisters. Mama June puts Honey Boo Boo/Alana first, but only in an over the top stage mother way. (IE. The ‘gogo juice’ and inappropriate child pagants) Honey Boo Boo/Alana recalls them as the happiest days of her life, which is kind of sad because Mama June was using her daughter as a cash cow and quickly signs them up for a season of the reality show, Toddlers and Tiaras.

Cut to 2012 and Honey Boo Boo/Alana has her own reality show with her family. Sugar Bear, Honey Boo Boo/Alana’s dad (?) isn’t as thrilled and the new attention make him worry about everyone changing. Sugar Bear and Mama June’s relationship turns toxic, and their fighting becomes tabloid fodder.

DICK PICKS TO MEN?!? I don’t remember that, Sugar Bear.

The family gets into a car accident during a nasty fight. Mama June kicks Sugar Bear out and uses the Honey Boo Boo money for a beautiful home in Georgia. Mama June isn’t happy with her life and finds solace in the fans on social media. The attention validates her. Pumpkin is also grown a boy crazy. Men come in and out go from Honey Boo Boo/Alana’s life. A man named Mark, who went to jail for the molestation of one of Mama June’s oldest daughters, is back in their lives. TMZ reports the story, and TLC cancels the show. Bye Bye to Honey Boo Boo. (Alana blames herself.)

2015, Honey Boo Boo/Alana is no longer the cute percosious kid or the money maker. Mama June leave Honey Boo Boo/Alana alone at home with no food and it starts to seem that Mama June’s love is only transactional. Honey Boo Boo/Alana can’t even afford new clothes because Mama June mismanaged their earnings.

The kids at school are mean to Honey Boo Boo/Alana, but that is the least of their problems. They have no money, but when things look down and out, Mama June gets her own show. It will be all about her being a mother and her glow-up after gastric bypass. The new crew arrives and tells Mama June she will go from “Not to Hot.”

The glow up is confusing to Honey Boo Boo/Alana. Does she need to lose weight, is she enough as she is, or will she need surgery too? With her newfound confidence, Mama June tells her daughter that she can homeschool. They are moving to bigger homes and are getting new management. Mama June quickly meets a man named Geno. (He is bad for her and gets Mama June hooked on crack.)

2018, Honey Boo Boo/Alana does Dancing With the Stars. (I have no recolection of this.) She makes friends with her dance partner, Tristian, who encourages Honey Boo Boo/Alana and tells her she is fantastic. The opportunities are in LA, but Mama June has to get back to Georgia to see her man and the drugs.

The show continues to film, and producers take issue with Geno’s shady dealings and unwillingness to be on camera. Mama June falls deeper and deeper into drugs and makes reckless choices, partying, and hanging out with lowlifes. Honey Boo Boo/Alana doesn’t feel safe in her own home. They stage an intervention on camera.

Mama June gets arrested in Alabama and makes the cover of the tabloids look like a mess. Honey Boo Boo/Alana posts a video to social media “pretending” to do drugs on a live. Pumpkin puts the breaks on Honey Boo Boo/Alana’s behavior and puts her sister on track to live a normal life and become a nurse. They enroll her in school and Honey Boo Boo/Alana loves it. (I always liked Pumpkin.)

Once out of jail, Mama June breaks parole and goes to Georgia to sell all of their stuff and the house. Mama June owes a lot of bad people a lot of money. Mama June and Geno were living in a car, but eventually they decided to go to rehab and find Jesus.

Why did her boyfriend look 30?

Honey Boo Boo/Alana gets a boyfriend and makes friends in school. Her life seems great until Mama June comes back into the picture. Honey Boo Boo/Alana and Pumpkin are reluctant to take her back into their lives. The trust has been broken, but they give her another chance. Mama June gets them booked on The Masked Singer, and ditches Honey Boo Boo/Alana for another man.

They are supringly still married

Pumpkin gets custody of Honey Boo Boo/Alana but Mama June is only worried about paying child support. Then Mama June does a flip, says she is getting married, and asks her daughters to be her bridesmaids. At the wedding, Honey Boo Boo/Alana tells her mom that she got into college and Mama June’s reaction is unsuportive, and again more conerned about money. Mama June isn’t helping Honey Boo Boo/Alana pay up for anything. (Ironically, Mama June stole a lot of money from her daughter. Even with a Coogan account.)

Honey Boo Boo/Alana tells Mama June that she is done being her little money maker. She is done trying to win her mother’s approval. Honey Boo Boo/Alana graduates high school, something no one in her family has done. She makes it to college on her own without the help of her mother.

STRAY Thoughts

Honey Boo Boo/Alana being involved in the telling of her story feels like some justice.

The actress who played Pumpkin, Georgia Small, was really excellent in this. I hope to see her in more Lifetime Movies.

Where is Mama June now?

  1. I was so interested in this! I watched the original Honey boo boo show and then forgot all about the family later so I wanted to see how everything turned out for them. I watched her season of Dancing with the stars: Junior. I think they only had one season for that series and it was awkward. Better that no one remembers it. Also watched them on Masked Singer.

    1. Also heard that Mama June got custody of her eldest daughter’s (anna who died but the movie didnt really go into that part) kid and is trying to get back into the pagent stuff for more money.

  2. This did not disappoint! Normally I’m not a fan of biopics on Lifetime but I throughly enjoyed this one. Hated Mama June from the get go.
