Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie begins with a sunglass-clad hunk sneaking into Ms. Vivica A. Fox’s home and rifling through her purse. (And one thing you shouldn’t do is go through a lady’s purse!) The man’s name is Marc, and he is snooping through Ms. Vivica A. Fox’s things. She forgets her keys, comes back inside, and notices something is amiss.

Cut to one week earlier, we meet Carrie, who is crying to her mother (Jackée Harry, who must be on Ozempic, but good for her!) because she wants to break up with her husband, Marc. Jackée Harry wants to know what is going on, and Carrie tells her that he is an abusive asshole. Marc calls Carrie and breathes heavily; he gaslights her, spies on her with hidden cameras, and threatens her if she ever leaves him. Marc used to be a police officer, so Carrie can’t even report him because they will cover for him. Jackée Harry gives her daughter a necklace and tells her to be safe.

Ms. Vivica A. Fox is a Criminal Defense Attorney named Kim in this one. She helps Carrie devise a plan to escape Marc. It includes a new identity named Margaret Cobb, a burner phone, and a hideout home in Malibu. Carrie/Maggie instantly finds a job at a diner as a waitress, thanks to a nice lady named Meredith. Her co-worker, Kyle, offers Carrie/Maggie to stay at his parents’ guest house. There is also a detective who asks her out on a date, which she declines. (This whole running away and starting a new life is working out pretty well, so far.)

Marc harasses Carrie but spends his time drinking martinis with a woman named Vicki. She is a detective, too, and she offers to help Marc track down Carrie. Marc goes to Ms. Vivica A. Fox’s house and asks where his wife is. She tells him to go kick rocks.
Carrie/Maggie relaxes by the pool and is invited to tea by Kyle’s mother, Elle. (Elle’s mother gave up coffee years ago for her health, so she will probably have death by Java before the movie is up.) Kyle, who is disappointingly not shirtless so far, installs security cameras outside Carrie and Maggie’s house. He asks her out, and Carrie/Maggie says yes because she wouldn’t be breaking her rule of not dating cops. On the date, Kyle opens up about being a writer, and Carrie/Maggie tells him that she is running away from an abusive husband. Kyle is supportive but doesn’t pry. (Good guy!)

A week has passed, apparently. We are back to Marc snooping through Ms. Vivica A Fox’s purse and home. He finds a picture of Carrie/Maggie outside of the diner and knows where he needs to go to get his wife. Marc sends Vicki to win Carrie/Maggie’s trust. Ms. Vivica A. Fox calls Marc’s boss and tells him to keep an eye on his employee. Marc’s boss threatens to fire him if he doesn’t leave. Carrie and Ms. Vivica A. Fox alone.
Marc goes right over to Ms. Vivica Fox’s house and threatens her. He also tells her to “SHUT UP,” and acting or not, I would NEVER utter those words to Ms. Vivica Fox. The disrespect!!!! Ms. Vivia A. Fox calls Carrie and warns her that Marc is on his way. Carrie goes to meet with Detective Sally Hawkins-Levine.

Kyle is finally shirtless!!!! YAY!

Marc makes his way to the diner and questions Carrie’s co-workers about her. They cover for her and don’t give up information. Meredith is confronted by Marc while she is closing the store, and things escalate into violence. Meredith pulls a knife on him, but Marc has a gun and kills Meredith. The police question Carrie/Maggie, and she tells them the truth about Marc.

Carrie’s secret is out, and she has 24-hour surveillance outside her home, which is actually Kyle’s mother’s home. Marc has a CB radio and listens to the cops and their break schedule, waiting for his chance. He gets into the guest house with no problem. He wants to run away together and tells Carrie that he is meant to be. Their conversation is interrupted by Kyle, but Marc tells her to get rid of him, or he will kill them both.
Kyle’s mother comes next, and she distracts Marc long enough for Carrie to hit him in the head with a drying pan. Marc is arrested and put in jail. Jackée Harry meets with Detective Sally Hawkins-Levine to ensure Marc won’t get bailed out and will stay behind bars for a long time.

Carrie decides to stay and help her co-worker, Gina, run the diner. She will live with Kyle, and he will call Maggie by her real name, Kyle!
Ms. Vivica Fox shows up to say the titular line!!! You sure picked THE WRONG MARRIAGE.
