Synopsis (via Lifetime)

A true crime fanatic becomes obsessed with finding the neighborhood killer responsible for the disappearance of her best friend. Emma Elle Paterson, Hannah Vandenbygaart, Robert Bazzocchi, and Damon Mclean star (2025).

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Like, Damn. She is having a bad day.

The movie begins with a red-headed woman tied up in a basement. Things look pretty bleak for her, TBH. Her name was Katie, a victim of a serial killer.

Love it when a time jump is indicated by a Chyron

Two years later, Slone reports on a true crime case on her social media channel @SloneTheSluth. Slone recommends having an “If I Go Missing” journal. Slone lives with her mother, aunt Abby, and cousin Camilla. Camilla encourages her cousin to go back to school instead of making videos in her room. That is rude because Slone works as a barista alongside her friend and coworker, Amanda.

We love a hot Italian

They discuss the patrons in the coffee shop, and Amanda theorizes that Katie’s stepbrother, Nathan, knows more about her disappearance than he is letting on. A new handsome man named Elliott comes into the coffee shop, and he is new in town. Slone gives him the 5th degree because he moves into the house across the street. Slone tells Amanda she has a bad feeling about him and insists he was asserting dominance over her. She has the Serial Killer Traits: Charming was all I wrote down, whoops!

One of the girls, Diana, at the coffee shop is the killer’s next victim in the same basement, probably Elliott’s.

Camilla thinks Elliott is cute and tells her cousin that Nathan is the creepy neighbor. Camilla flirts with Elliott when she gets the chance. Slone helps her cousin fill out her “If I Go Missing” journal, but Camilla worries about Slone’s mental health and thinks the journal is Slone working through trauma from Katie’s murder.

Back at the coffee shop, Nathan shoots his shot with a sobby girl named Paige, and she publicly rejects him. Elliott thinks they are fighting, and he jumps in, being a tough guy. Amanda records the interaction on her phone and loves every minute of it. Then Amanda takes out the trash and finds a foot in the dumpster. Slone posts about the missing girl and hits 20K followers.

Slone peeks out the window and sees Paige meeting Elliott for a date. Slone wakes up in the night to the sound of an argument and notates the time. She is building up a case against Elliott.

The coffee shop reopens, and Paige is nowhere to be seen. She is in the basement like the other girl. Slone grills Elliott, but he is unfazed. As e leaves the coffee shop, Elliott runs into Camilla and the flirt while Amanda watches jealously. Amanda also randomly doesn’t let Slone use her bathroom when they go to her apartment and keeps the window open. (To air out the MURDER smells?)

There was a lot of blood in this scene

Paige dies a bloody death. That might be cut in the Lifetime version.

Slone tries to warn her family about Elliott, but all her talk about serial killers rubs Aunt Abby the wrong way, and she says they are going to move out. Camilla continues to refuse to fill out her “If I go Missing” Journal.

Montage for the win!

We get a fun and stylish montage of Slone sluthing. She doesn’t find what she’s hoping for, but tries to piece everything together on her live feed on her new, verified social media account.

Elliott continues to bring brunette women home to date, and Slone watches through the window. Slone organizes a missing person poster party and notices Camilla and Eliott exchanging numbers. Camilla tells her cousin that she wants to date Elliott and doesn’t mind if he’s a player.

She tried it! I would too, TBH!

Slone sets up a Honey Trap and creates an account using Camilla’s glasses and a brown wig to entice Elliott to invite her on a date. Elliott is a dummy and falls for the routine. Slone throws herself at Elliott, but he genuinely likes Camilla. Camilla tells Slone to get help, and even though she has 100K followers, Slone is an embarrassment and a danger to them both.

Elliott sees the drama he has caused and calls off the date with Camilla. She takes off her glasses, tosses her hair out of its ponytail, and takes him to a bar. They end up talking about Slone and her troubles. Camilla also shares about Katie’s unsolved murder. Elliott talks about his childhood and living in his sister’s shadow. They toast to fresh starts.

RUDE!

Rude messages happen? IDK what this is

Police take Nathan into the station after Camilla reports him for suspicious activity. She thinks he was the one sending her the rude social media posts and is responsible for the murders. Camilla and Elliott continue to go on dates, but he starts to get a dark side to him and admits his sister is dead. After the date, Elliott asks Camilla to come inside and apologizes for his behavior. His sister died of cancer, and it is hard for him to talk about.

Amanda and Slone close up the coffee shop, and Slone notices her coworker typing nonstop on her phone. Slone sends Amanda to clean the bathroom and hacks into her cellphone, learning that Amanda is the rude commenter. Slone rushes home to tell Camilla, but Camilla screams at her cousin that she is NOT a victim.

In a Hallmark movie this would be the end!

Camilla literally runs across the street to Elliott’s house in a defiant act. They make out while Slone watches from across the street. The next morning, Camilla doesn’t answer her phone, and Slone is convinced that something has happened. Slone knocks on Elliott’s door and is surprised to learn that Camilla isn’t there.

Cool use of light and shadow here

Slone rushes to Amanda’s house and sneaks in from the open window. Amanda attacks Slone with a cast-iron skillet, but Slone grabs it from her. Amanda says she didn’t kill anyone; she is just an online troll with jealousy issues. Amanda has an alibi; she moderates an online reality show forum.

See ya, hottie!

Haha, Slone rushes off with the cast-iron skillet and breaks into Eliott’s house. She heads into the basement and doesn’t find her cousin. Elliott catches Slone in his home, and she tells him why she thinks he is the killer. Elliott tells Slone she is out of her mind. Nathan comes into the house and calls 911. Elliott and Nathan get into it, and Slone pulls a knife on him. The police arrive and arrest Elliott. The end?

No, not the end. The police find Brittney’s head in the trash. Slone gives the police Camila’s “If I Go Missing” Journal to help them solve the case. (Calm down, Nancy Drew.)

Well, wow!

Three weeks later. Slone, her Aunt, and mother get ready for Camilla’s funeral. Slone goes over to Nathan’s house to see if he needs a ride. She thanks him for saving her life, and they hug. He invites Slone to watch a movie with him sometime.

The movie shows us what REALLY went down. Nathan asked Camilla to help him find his dog and tied her in his basement. He has been the serial killer all along. Nathan takes tokens from all his victims.

Loved this so much

Slone posts on her social media about Camilla’s death and tells the story of what happened with Elliott, but she is totally wrong. Damn. She thought she had it all figured out.

STRAY Thoughts

I loved the tone and commentary about true crime sleuths.

The generic Billie Eilish music in this kind of slapped.

  1. The ending of this one was sad and unsatisfying. An innocent man is put behind bars while the real killer is still out there and nobody knows. Otherwise good movie!

    1. yes! That is exactly how I felt, right up until the end, I was enjoying it. The ending left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Must.watch.something. happy.

  2. This movie is on Tubi. It actually is a Tubi original. It came out in late 2024. I was so confused seeing as a new Lifetime movie. I watched back on December 13, 2024 on Tubi when it was released. Also the same guy Stefan Brogren who played Snake in the Degrassi franchise and recently directed Dateless to Dangerous: My Son’s Secret Life directed this movie. Also, this movie was incredibly predictable. Figured out who the actual killer was the first time he was on screen. The movie tried too hard to make us think that a certain guy was the bad guy. Usually, that’s a red herring.

  3. This movie was incredibly predictable. Also, it is a Tubi original. I watched back on December 13, 2024 when it premiered on Tubi. Interesting that Stefan Brogren who played Snake in the Degrassi franchise and directed a far better recent Lifetime movie Dateless to Dangerous: My Son’s Secret Life also directed this movie

    1. It needs a part 2 to get the real killer Nathan put away and get Elliott out of jail. It’s not right to end it this way.

  4. Wow! Is this a Tubi Original. That bloody scene was so un-Lifetime like. And poor Camille, that was terrible. I felt so sorry that she ended up being the victim. I actually thought this might be another Podcast Murder type scenario. I actually had to watch something fun afterwards. This movie hit on a True Crime or True Story movie, something I never watched. The editing with the split screens and jaunty music led me to believe this was a different type of movie. Was enjoying until that bleek end.
