Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie begins with an overconfident hiker on a trail talking to her mother, Evie, on a cellphone. Rachel drops the phone and falls over a cliff trying to get it. Her mother is on the other end of the line and hears her daughter fall to her death.

A group of grieving mothers who lost their daughters band together for a hiking excursion support group. Evie organized the event and is disappointed to learn that Berry, the guide, is a man. Evie insists they hike the trail without a guide and that she can handle it.

They head out with their pack and walking sticks. Evie is a pace setter and tough on everyone. Hope is the least experienced and most horny. Jen is a lesbian pastor and founder of the group. Jen talks about a piece of paper, and it is supposed to help Evie come to terms with the loss of her daughter. Evie rips up that paper so fast and tells Jen to F off.

While they walk, they see a hunter and call out, but the hunter ignores them. There are also Coyotes. Camping seems dangerous, and when you pair that with grieving mothers, I’m not sure that is a recipe for a good time.

A bear raids their camp and rips up their tent for a travel-size tube of toothpaste. Some of the group want to turn back, but Evie is adamantly against that idea. The bear takes Bea’s backpack, and the map and phone charger go with it.

Evie decides to take a detour to investigate some smoke signals she sees, as there might be campers nearby with a phone. It leads them to a creepy cabin in the woods, surrounded by booby traps. They go inside and hear knocking under the floorboards.

All the mothers spring into action and look under the crawl space. They find a girl named Alice, and Maya tries to coax her from her hiding space. They decide to take Alice with them, and just as they are about to leave, the armed owners of the cabin return. Hope gets stuck when everyone else climbs out the window and has to hide.

Evie comes back for Hope, and the cabin owners catch them trying to escape. They pull a gun on them, and the gun goes off, and Hope is dead. The cabin people fan out to find the rest of the hikers. The plan is to box them in and retrieve the girl.

One of the cabin guys has a bow and arrow and shoots at Evie. Bea steps on a bear trap, and Jen tries to call for help on the cabin radio. Everyone has split up, which seems like a bad idea.

Clayton, the cabin owner, tells Jen that his daughter Ruthie wanted a kid, so he kidnapped Alice. Jen runs for her life and falls into a ditch that they had dug as a trap. Clayton leaves her there to die.

Maya takes care of Bea and Alice. Maya also talks about her daughter and her courageous spirit for the first time since she died. Bea tells Maya and Alice to go on without her. They come across a man named Jay and ask him for help, but the man doesn’t have a phone. Ruth finds them and points her gun at them. Jay tries to mediate, but ends up running away in fear. Maya uses her people skills to get Ruth to question her reality. Maybe Ruth is a kidnapping victim, too.

Evie is back after overtaking the bow-and-arrow man, and she knocks Ruth out. They go to find the rest of the hikers. Jen climbs out of the pit and finds the others. Jen is set on saving Bea, since NO ONE SAVED HER!

Clayton finds Bea and uses her as bait to bring the hikers to him. Ruth helps her “father” and has serious doubts about whether he is her real father. Ruth looks in a lock box and discovers that she was kidnapped to replace Clayton’s daughter, who died in childbirth along with his wife.

Evie lures Clayton into the woods, pretending to lead him to Alice. Evie shoots Clayon with an arrow, and then Ruthie shows up with her gun. Ruthie demands to know the truth, and when he doesn’t tell her, she is angry. Ruthie butts Clayon with her rifle and gives Evie a phone to call for help.

The hikers wait for help, and NO ONE CARES ABOUT HOPE DYING?!??! That is so rude.
