Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Tiffany, an ASL teacher with a tragic past, takes on new student Amy and sparks a romance with the teen’s father. But when her life is threatened, she realizes her past has come back to haunt her

Recap/Wine Thoughts

ASL teacher Tiffany teaches her students about nature, when one curious kid named Leo follows a leaping frog into the street and is killed by oncoming traffic.

Her sister made her lunch, cute

Two years later, Tiff is starting over as a sign language interpreter. She has been traumatized for years, but is ready to return to work as a summer school teacher. Tiffany has been staying with her engaged sister, Lee, and her fiancé, Ryan, but wants to get her life together before her sister’s big day. (Which is nice of her!)

That might be easier said than done, because right as Tiffany walks into the school, she sees a boy who reminds her of the frog kid. Flashbacks happen, but Tiffany snaps out of it. The principal warns Tiffany that the student she will be helping has gone through five interpreters during the school year. Amy’s parents don’t want their daughter to receive special treatment.

Angsty Teen

Amy thinks having an interpreter is super lame, and the other kids make fun of her. Amy got a nasty ear infection and recently lost her hearing. The day doesn’t go well and ends with someone throwing a rock at Tiff’s windshield, shattering it badly. There is a note attached that reads:

“OUIT BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.”

Tiff isn’t going to let that stop her from trying to form a relationship with Amy. Amy draws pictures, and Tiffany encourages her. Still, Amy needs to focus on her studying because she received an F on an assignment. Some bullies believe Amy is faking her hearing loss to get attention. (It reminds me of a Strangers with Candy episode where Jerri Blank is illiterate.) These bitches are heartless!

Amy’s dad, Craig, is not very good at sign language, and he asks Tiffany for tutoring lessons. He also gives her a lift home. He is divorced, but is he overstepping? Probably. He is dead sexy? Yes.

Tiffany rides her bike to meet her sister, and the bike chain breaks. Amy’s mother, Natalie, offers Tiff a ride and threatens to make her disappear (like the other interpreters) if Amy doesn’t start doing better in school.)

Hot but shady

Ryan seems jealous of Leah’s babying of her sister. He listens behind doorways and tells his fiancée that Tiffany is disrespectful when she is late to a cake tasting due to the whole bike thing. Did Amy mess with the chain?

Lee suggests that her sister try being Amy’s friend and make a real connection. Tiffany shows Amy that she can feel the vibration of the beat in music, and they bond over their shared appreciation for the hot drummer. They go to a coffee shop, and Amy meets an actual cute guy who knows sign language. Tiff totally cockblocks and makes Amy go to school instead of getting to know the cutie.

Tiffany doesn’t cockblock herself and meets Amy’s dad for late-night sign language lessons. Sadly, Amy’s mom isn’t as dedicated to learning a new language and forces Amy to read her lips as she over-enunciates and gives the thumbs-up sign. During the lesson, someone sneaks into the house and bugs Tiff’s cellphone. They write “I WARNED YOU” on Tiffany’s car window.

Tiffany freaks out and worries that someone is really after her. She calls her sister, and they decide to go to the police. Ryan overhears them freaking out and admits he broke the bike chain. Ryan complains about Leah spending too much time with her deadbeat/traumatized sister instead of planning for their wedding. Leah tells Ryan that he is overreacting. The couple fights, and the wedding might be off.

Craig and Tiffany enjoy some wine and kissing, until they are rudely interrupted by Natalie, Tiffany’s ex-wife, who is upset that Tiffany isn’t watching Amy better and letting Amy talk to Nate, who is an older guy. He is 21. Amy isn’t upset and is actually rooting for Craig and Tiffany to get together.

The principal thinks otherwise and warns Tiffany that Craig has a history of infidelity and isn’t divorced; they are separated. Tiffany is overwhelmed with the information and needs to give her sister and fiancé more space. Tiffany asks Leah for help, but Leah can’t be the problem solver in Tiffany’s life anymore.

Determined to become more independent, Tiff strikes out on her own and begins looking at new apartments. Someone locks Tiff in the bathroom and pumps in sleeping gas or something? Tiffany passes out in the bathtub while trying to call 911. The incident leaves Amy at school with no interpreter. Tiffany rushes to school after the police call her crazy—the principal fires Tiffany for being so neglectful. Amy leans on Nick for support, and he tells her that she doesn’t need Tiffany in her life.

Tiffany finally decides to go to the police and show them all the evidence. She theorizes that Natalie is the prime suspect because she works for the reality firm that owns the house where she was gassed. The cop says it is all circumstantial evidence.

Next, Tiffany talks to Craig, and he admits that he and Natalie are technically still together. He did have a fling with a teacher, but reassures Tiffany he really likes her and offers to help Tiffany figure out who is after her. They discuss the mix-up with Amy and what happened with the presentation. Amy throws the frog in Tiffany’s face and calls her a neglectful, murderous teacher.

Ryan comes home alone, and an intruder is in the house. They fight over a knife, and we hear gunshots. Tiffany comes home and finds Ryan on the floor. She calls 911, and Ryan is rushed to the hospital in stable condition.

Tiffany ends up in the hospital after she is run off the road by a black sedan that has been following her. She has a mild concussion, and Craig is by her side. They call the police, who aren’t helpful, so she throws her phone and finds the tracking device. She remembers Nate saying he was a tech nerd, and the cop calls back and says that Nate’s last name is McFadden. He is Leo’s older brother, out for revenge for Tiffany’s neglect.

Craig and Tiffany rush to find Amy and use geotracking. Tiffany realizes they are going to the nature preserve where Leo died. Leo explains that he couldn’t let Tiffany get away with killing his brother. Amy pretends to go along with his idea and asks to shoot Tiffany herself. Amy signs to Tiffany that she is lying, and they manage to wrestle Nate to the ground.

At Amy’s graduation party, Craig makes a speech in sign language thanks to the help of Tiffany. Everyone is cool now! The end!

STRAY Thoughts

I feel like Aubrey Reynolds just wanted to show off her ASL skills. Seriously, though, I like the inclusion of a deaf character and the use of sign language in the movie.

I liked that Ryan turned out to be just a selfish guy and not a stalker. Nate’s motivations made total sense to me!
