Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Jess works at a struggling inn and is obsessed with popular lifestyle influencer Amanda Jane. Jess pitches to the owner that she should comp Amanda a stay at the inn for a weekend.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie starts at the Gable Inn, which is creepy. Jess, a social media influencer, sneaks around and looks through an office, finding a headband before hearing a blood-curdling scream. She looks around some more, and someone hits Jess from behind.

Cut to Jess at a cookie shop with her boyfriend Robbie. Jess isn’t a social media influencer yet; she is just a wannabe. Jess tags a popular influencer on a post about cookies, and Amanda Jane sends Jess a message. Amanda Jane has been dealing with trolls and online bullying.

Jess suggests that Amanda Jan get away from the haters and stay at the Gable Inn, where she works. Mary, Jess’s boss, thinks it is a great idea and trusts Jess’s expertise because she went to college for marketing. Not everyone thinks Jess is a genius, and she gets threatening messages to leave Amanda Jane alone, or else!

Robbie doesn’t quite understand Jess’s obsession, but he encourages his girlfriend to pursue it. Amanda Jane agrees to go to the inn and is treated like a VIP. Amanda Jane records videos and takes pictures, but doesn’t seem too interested in Jess herself.

Esteban, the inn’s security, is on high alert with a social media influencer on site. The question is, who will protect them from Esteban? He is very creepy and not a fan of social media. The housekeeper, Jaclyn, is also annoyed because her teenage daughter follows her and wants to book a room at the hotel too.

Amanda is worried about one of her followers, @AFandaJane, stalking her and doesn’t even go outside because she is afraid of being followed. On the last day of her stay, Amanda Jane didn’t come out of her room all day. When Jess checks on Amanda Jane, Jess learns that Amanda Jane has already checked out and finds blood on some furniture. Jaclyn cleans the room and blames the blood on a bloody nose.

Jess looks online and is surprised to see that Amanda Jane hasn’t gone live at her 8 pm regular time or posted anything since leaving the inn or responding to Jess’s DMs. Two days with no posts is VERY unusual. Jacklyn is excited that Amanda Jane is offline, giving her daughter a chance to go viral on social media.

Robbie decides to help Jess figure out what happened to Amanda Jane, and he gives Jess a little microphone to plant on Jaclyn. A photo of Amanda Jane’s messy room leaks online, and Jaclyn’s daughter is the one who posted it. Tonya even puts an unauthorized promo code on the post. When Jess asks Jaclyn about it, she freaks and says her daughter deserves the followers she has gained from the leaked pictures. Jaclyn runs an errand, and someone hits her in the back of the head.

The next day, Jess finds Jaclyn’s body and calls 911, but it is too late. The police question Jess about the inn and what has been going on. Mary sends Jess home early because even though the inn is booked solid, Jess needs to rest. Then Mary cries in Esteban’s arms when they are alone.

Jess cries to Robbie, and he agrees with Jess that something has happened to Amanda Jane. They work together to get proof. They stake out the Gable inn and sneak into the crime scene. Jess overhears Mary and Esteban talking about sticking to the plan. Jess is almost caught, but makes an escape.

Robbie is TOO supportive of a boyfriend and pinging all my spidy senses. The police get an anonymous tip that Jess was at the crime scene. The police tell Jess to stay away from the inn until the investigation into Jaclyn’s death is finished. That doesn’t stop Jess from looking into things more, and she suspects Mary is responsible.

We are back to the beginning of the movie, where Jess is looking through Mary’s office and is attacked from behind. When Jess comes too, she is surprised to find Mary next to her, tied up. Robbie has been working with Amanda Jane the whole time. Robbie is Amanda Jane’s boyfriend.

Amanda Jane dumps gasoline and explains that their fathers worked together and were in some scandal together. Amanda Jane blames Jess. Wow, what a terrible motive. The movie is ruined.

One month later, Jess moves to the city and is the president of her own marketing agency. Good for her! Jesse’s mom gives her a picture and says her dad may have been a bad guy, but he got Jess right. The end!

STRAY Thoughts

This movie was/is a Lifetime Movie Club exclusive that I totally missed, which is bad marketing because I’m totally a member of the club!

A sloppily laid-out motive can just tank a movie.
