When a runaway bride seeks refuge in the only town she’s ever called home, she unexpectedly falls for her former high school crush—who’s hiding his own heartbreak.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Emma is getting married and walks in on her husband calling her a “glorified roommate.” Emma has a habit of leaving men at the altar, but this time it seems justified. She runs away in slowmo.
Coach Mitch comes back from a school game and runs into Emma running to her car. She thinks his car is her rental, so he gives her a ride to her sister Nikki’s house and tries not to ask questions about the wedding dress.
Emma and her sister drink wine and commiserate about failed relationships and high school. They both went to the high school where Coach Mitch works, and Nikki is the newly promoted principal. Nikki suggests that Emma help Mitch plan the annual holiday fundraiser. The school is fully decked out for Christmas, and even the gym has a Christmas tree.
Coach Mitch used to be the star of the high school and suffers from main character syndrome. He is going to need all the help he can get because he is not only a terrible party planner, but he is also a newly single dad, struggling to keep his son in line.
A GAY BARISTA SHOWS UP AND PIQUES MY INTEREST.
The movie spends a lot of time with Coach Mitch and Emma falling in love while planning the party. Emma also gives Coach Mitch some parenting advice, but it is tough not to overstep. The advice works, and Lucas comes around. He has been hiding an artistic talent, but he didn’t tell his dad because he knew his dad wanted him to play basketball.
Then, Emma’s ex-fiancé shows up and wants to talk. Coach Mitch gets jealous, but the ex just wants to keep Emma as a life coach.
Coach Mitch and Emma coach the basketball team to win the game, and thankfully, the Christmas tree is still there. They kiss. Merry Christmas!
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
The foster care thing was really shoehorned in here.
Julia Roberts was NOT featured or talked about.
