When Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe is found dead in a snowbank outside a friend’s home, his girlfriend Karen Read, is charged in connection with his death. What begins as a tragedy quickly ignites a firestorm that captures national attention.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Very fancy title sequence. The camera is shaky, as if it were a documentary.
Karen and her boyfriend, John, are drinking at a bar in Canton during a snowstorm. Karen is downing vodka sodas and is horny AF. They meet up with friends and close the bar. There is an after-party at Brian’s, and John wants to keep the party going, but Karen is ready to go home. Karen drops John off, and yes, she was drunk driving, but is that a CRIME?!?! Oh, it is, yes. Don’t do that, people!
Karen wakes up on the couch, still drunk, and can’t find John in the house. She checks her phone, and it is 4:31 AM. She calls Brian’s wife and John, but can’t find him. She is like “PICK UP THE PHONE! I THINK BY A PLOW!” Karen is still drunk, driving around, making phone calls. Her friends come to help, and then they find John frozen in the snow.
The police arrive on the scene and know because he is with the Boston PD. They try to revive him, while Karen screams at them in the background. Karen calls John’s family and tells them that she wants to die, and Karen is put on a 5051 hold. John is later confirmed dead.
Karen has a “brown out” and doesn’t remember calling John 53 times and leaving drunken/angry voicemails. Karen tries to return to her life at John’s home and with his kids from a previous relationship, but John’s family is there and takes custody of the kids. They also ask her to pack her bags and leave.
The police investigate the scene with SOLO CUPS? The police repo her car as evidence and take her phone. She is the primary suspect, and people start looking at her differently. Karen is like, “Let them, if I did somethingwrong, I will pay my dues.”
Karen lawyers up and works through scenarios. As John’s family holds a large and well-covered funeral, which Karen can’t even attend due to a restraining order. Karen tries to turn herself in, but the police want the spectacle and arrest her at her home with heavy media coverage.
The police book and fingerprint Karen. As she is alone in her cell, she runs through the night’s events in her mind. She can’t remember hitting her boyfriend with his car or leaving him at the scene. The police say there is evidence from the car’s taillight and the glass from John’s drink that links Karen Read to the scene.
While she is released on bail, Karen is surprised to learn that all her friends have turned against her. The police arrest her for manslaughter and second-degree murder. The podcast and online sleuths start picking up the story, and it explodes. Karen ups her legal team when she realizes that she is up against the Boston PD, who want someone to pay for the death of one of their own.
The podcaster goes HARD for Karen and holds “Free Karen Read” rallies. Karen’s lawyers claim she is the victim of a conspiracy, and they will work to find out what really happened to John O’Keefe.
The move finally gives Luke Humphry something to do, and we see the evolution of Karen and John’s relationship. John and Karen’s relationship was on the rocks because they weren’t co-parenting his niece and nephew well. (He took them in after his sister tragically passed away.) Karen and John have a hot-and-cold relationship, with lots of ups and downs.
On the day of his death, Karen and John were fighting all day. Karen was blowing up his phone, and he was avoiding her, but agreed to go out for one drink.
THE JUDGES WIGGGG! OMG. We got one classic Lifetime wig in production. Elsewhere in the trial, the lawyers expose inappropriate messages objectifying Karen Read. The trial is a circus.
The defense presents a compelling case. Karen has dedicated so much time proving her innocence. Her father is proud of his daughter for her strength and power to fight back. The jury is locked in, and they can reach a verdict. The judge, with the wig, declares a mistrial.
At the retrial, the facts are presented to a new jury by the same judge, in the same wig. This time, they find Karen Read not guilty, and that wig in contempt of court.
STRAY Thought
The Boston accents are killing me. Not as much as that WIG. HAHAHA. LOL FOREVER!

Katie Cassidy is a dead ringer for Karen Read. There is an interesting article about how she approached the role, and she hopes Karen Read is flattered by the portrayal.
The use of police body cams and CTV cameras gives this movie a feeling of being more legit than it is.
