Synopsis (via Lifetime)

On the brink of prom queen glory and a coveted athletic scholarship, a teen’s world starts to unravel as she tries to conceal a late-term pregnancy while maintaining the flawless image she’s built for herself and her single mother.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Inspired by True Events.

Kat Walker wins prom queen at prom, and then she pees her pants or her water breaks, hard to tell! I’m not a doctor! It is in front of the whole school and is super embarrassing.

Three months earlier, Kat and her BFF, Hannah, are planning colleges and what to do with their high school boyfriends. Travis gives them a ride to school and talks about the big senior BBQ, but he doesn’t help hang up Prom posters. Vote for Kat!

A guy named Simon waits by Kat’s locker; he is her ex-boyfriend and still upset that she ghosted him. Simon wants to be friends, which is not possible, especially in high school.

Kat is on the rowing team, and at a weigh-in, she has put on some lbs. Could it be from a baby? When she tries on her prom dress, she rips the zipper. Kat hasn’t thrown up yet, so we will have to wait for the Lifetime Movie telltale sign. The weigh-in rattles Kat, and she is worried her perfect high school life is about to come crashing down.

Kat’s mom, Abigail, was let go from her job due to AI-related layoffs, but she is more concerned with Kat skipping the carbs to hit her goal weight. Maybe pay your past-due bills, Abigail! Abigail decides not to tell Kat, but she does tell nerdy author neighbor, Brad.

While Simon and Travis fight over Kat, she passes out like a Victorian woman on a chaise lounge. Kat wakes up in the hospital, and the doctor tells her that she is six months pregnant. Kat is suffering from Anorexia Athletica, and the doctor warns that if she doesn’t stop skipping meals, she could hurt herself and her unborn baby. Kat keeps her pregnancy a secret from her mother because she is 18.

Simon is concerned and visits Kat to see if she is okay. Simon is most definitely the baby daddy, but that isn’t what Abigail has planned for her daughter’s perfect future.

Kat decides to hide the pregnancy and asks Hannah for help. Hannah, of course, agrees to help and looks up adoption agencies. Kat tries to tell Simon while he sexily fixes up a car, but she chickens out. Then she overhears her mom calling her mom for money.

At the hospital, Kat meets potential adoptive parents, and maybe she can have a secret baby after all. Then Abigail comes clean about losing her job and not being able to pay for college. It isn’t like Kat doesn’t have a full scholarship to another school or anything. She has to lose one more pound and win the high school rowing championship. NBD!

Travis, on the other hand, wants to get a hotel room after prom, and it’s like, that is how we got into this mess.

Kat makes weight, wins the match, and is on her way to Yale. Meanwhile, Hannah has made it into zero of her schools. Kat has been a crappy friend to Hannah, and Hannah stops showing up. Kat’s adoptive parents back out. She goes back to the doctor, who is like, WTF is wrong with you. You need to take care of yourself and the baby.

It is time for the prom! Travis gives Kat some spiked punch, and when she doesn’t drink it, he calls her a stick in the mud. Which is weird teenager language. Truly, has a teenager ever said that? Simon, on the other hand, is really understanding and nice to Kat.

We are back to the water-breaking moment. Hannah takes Kat to the bathroom and literally gives birth to the baby on the floor. The head is CROWNING. (Oh wow. No.) The baby comes out, and they cut the umbilical cord with a set of keys and wrap the baby in a pashmina.

The boys try to piece things together, but they are teenage boys. Hannah drives Kat and the baby home, instead of to THE HOSPITAL. I guess Kat is planning to raise her secret baby in her room? Kat tries to swaddle the baby from a YouTube video, so things might not work out.

Abigail comes home and takes her daughter to the hospital. The doctors tell Abigail that her daughter is severely underweight, but the mother and daughter are eventually fine. Kat tells Simon he is the father.

Kat doesn’t want to raise a baby right now, and her mother and ex-boyfriend agree. Simon agrees to raise the baby, let Kat go to rehab, let her choose herself, and let go of being perfect.

Abigial apologizes for putting too much pressure on her daughter. Oh, and Abigail is 37?!?!? She is back in school studying to be a nutritionist. Which seems like a poor choice since she was enabling her daughter’s eating disorder.

STRAY Thought

A good old-fashioned Lifetime eating disorder movie/teen pregnancy flick?!? Takes me back to the 90s.

Shat!??! Can we say Shat on TV now?

Crowning at the prom is a diabolical title.

I had Anorexia Athletica, for real. I was 4% body fat. I wasn’t pregnant tho.

The National Alliance for Eating Disorders (NAED) is a longstanding non-profit dedicated to helping those who struggle with these mental disorders. Their hotline is slightly different from others, as it connects you with a licensed mental health professional instead of a volunteer.

The hotline can be reached at 1-866-662-1235 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The service is free, and callers are encouraged to ask about treatment for different types of eating disorders, help with their symptoms or those of a friend, or simply ask for emotional support if they’re going through a tough time.

  1. Somewhat corny but I just had to watch it to the end. It was hard for me to accept that she was really okay with the dad just raising the baby. I felt a disconnect there for some reason.
