Synopsis (via Lifetime)
15 yrs after she was left in a ditch, a young woman, is contacted by a millionaire from NYC who claims to be her mother. When she arrives at the family estate, she finds herself in the middle of a mysterious plot.
Thoughts
The movie begins with a young girl who goes missing and is found by hunters.
Flash to years later in New York City; Jane Smith lives in a loft with Finch, her roommate/foster care friend who uses a wheelchair. A letter comes in from Social Services for Jane that they might have information about her past. The social worker, Gwen, tells Jane that they have someone who claims to be Jane’s mother. Jane suffers from amnesia and doesn’t remember her childhood. She is sure that she wants to meet the mother she never had and get answers about her past.
The mother is a posh New York socialite named Sylvia Knowles. She cries and hugs her daughter, who she calls Savannah. Gwen cautions the women from getting too close because they aren’t 100% sure they are related. (Then why did you bring it up, GWEN?!?!)
The estate is huge and gaudy. Jane is thrilled to come from a wealthy family and is greeted by the estate manager Theresa, who seems skeptical of Jane. Sylvia shows her new daughter around and tells her that her father, unfortunately, passed away when she went missing. (He committed suicide.) A younger named Carlo has replaced him. Carlos is vivacious and extroverted. They celebrate Jane’s birthday. She is overwhelmed. Sylvia gifts Jane a set of Russian Nesting Dolls. One piece is missing, and Jane has had it her whole life. (Goosebumps.)
While exploring the grounds, Jane finds her own grave. Sylvia buried some of her daughter’s belongings when she was presumed dead. Jane also sees a little girl walking through the woods, and it creeps her out. Sylvia offers Jane to stay at the estate and promises that she will inherit everything.
Jane doesn’t want the creepy old mansion because it is haunted by her father’s ghost and a creepy little girl. In the middle of the night, Jane sneaks into the basement and finds a secret room. It causes her to have disturbing flashbacks to her childhood and being buried alive. She tells Finch about her concerns, and he tells her to get the hell out of there and does some online research. He learns that Carlos has married rich widows in the past.
In the basement room, Jane finds old letters and pictures written by Savannah. The child hated Carlos and loved her father. Jane hides the notes, but Theresa knows she has been snooping. Sylvia shares that Jane is legally the sole hire of her father’s fortunes. She wants Jane to work with the lawyers to reverse the trust and give the money to the family. The talk puts off Jane. It seems her family has alterative motives for wanting her back.
Finch and Jane continue to look up articles online and something is up. Jane thinks Carlo may have killed a little girl to get the inheritance. They get into an argument when Finch accuses Jane of having a mental breakdown.
Carlo locks Jane in the room in the basement to force her to sign the legal documents. Theresa lets Jane out when Carlo leaves because she believes that Jane is not a golddigger. Sylvia tells Jane that she will get them out of this, but why would they believe her.
The little girl shows up again and shares her memories with Jane. Sylvia was having an affair with Carlo, and when Savannah found out, they locked her in the basement and killed her father. Then Carlo killed the girl and buried her alive.
Sylvia comes back with a knife and stabs Theresa with a butcher knife. Then she chases Jane around the house with the knife. Carlo comes back and he grabs her and ties her up in the back of his car. They take Jane to the woods and plan on killing her just like they did with Savannah. As Carlo is burying Jane alive, her cellphone goes off. He stops to turn off the phone, and Jane attacks him. She kills him with a shovel.
Jane comes back to the estate and tells Sylvia that she is Savannah. Slyvia loses it and cradles an imaginary baby.
I guess Jane REALLY is Savannah because she lives in the estate with Theresa. (Who survived the knife stabbing.) Slyvia is alone in a mental hospital.
