Thoughts
Kara and Ben are throwing a birthday party for their adopted daughter/strange child, Riley. They are looking for a new nanny because their current nanny, Mrs. Gregory, has a new grandbaby. They get an unmarked package with a creepy-ass doll inside. (Annabelle?!?)
Interviews are conducted, and Kara picks an attractive/trashy young woman, with a blunt delivery, named Kelcie. It seems like Kara should pick the manny because her relationship with Ben is strained. (He cheated, and she might never forgive him.) The next morning Kara talks to a social worker who informs her that Vanessa, Riley’s birth mother, would like a visitation. Kara declines.
Kelcie seems more interested in the wifi password (1234) than the child she is caring for. Kelcie talks on her cellphone about inappropriate topics while burning a grilled cheese sandwich. They play a game of hide and seek in the yard, which is really Kelcie looking at her phone while counting. Someone sneaks into the house and starts a fire by turning on the stove burners. Kelcie is obviously fired. Later, a neighbor named Jannette, warns Kara about a woman lurking around her house. Kara brushes it off.
Nanny Alyssa is Kelcie’s replacement. She is adorable and gets along with Riley immediately. When Alyssa meets Ben, she also gets along with him immediately. (Wink, Wink.) Kara opens up about adopting a foster child because when she was young, her parents were terrible. Alyssa promises to watch Riley like she is her own.
The family takes a trip to the beach. Alyssa tags along. When she sees Ben trying to put sunscreen on his dadbod, she is quick with an assist. Kara misses the beach because of work obligations, so she doesn’t see the inappropriate touching. Kara instead runs into Riley’s birthmother, Vanessa. (Erin Cahill) Vanessa promises she has her life in order and wants to see her daughter.
Later, at the dinner table, Alyssa plays footsie with Ben. He at first thinks it is his wife but then realizes that it is Alyssa. He weirded out, but then so on that he makes love to his wife. They are interrupted by Riley screaming from a nightmare. When Kara checks on her daughter, she finds Alyssa comforting her. Kara tells Alyssa that she has things covered and sings “Rock a Bye Baby” Meanwhile, Ben heads to the kitchen for a glass of water, and Alyssa sneaks up behind him in sexy lingerie. He turns down her advances. That is when she tells him that she already slept with him during a drunken one nightstand. Ben is horrified, but honestly, he should remember her if he slept with her, and it was the one time he cheated on his wife.
The next day, Ben tries to lay down some ground rules with Alyssa. She doesn’t listen and gives him a lap dance. Alyssa tells him that he is obsessed with her, and their relationship would be effortless. Ben shuts it down by saying he chooses Kara every time and throws Alyssa out of the house. She tells him he is making a big mistake.
Kara has little to no questions when Ben tells her that Alyssa had to leave due to a family emergency. Riley is bummed that Alyssa is gone and is secretly talking to someone in the front yard. Riley claims it is her doll, creepier than talking to a stalker nanny or recovering alcoholic mother.
Ben showers for no other reason than to give us another look at that dadbod. Someone watches him while he showers, and he thinks it is Kara, but she is just getting home from a beach trip with Riley. In the middle of the night, someone watches the family as they sleep. It is Alyssa. She packs Riley a bag and kidnaps her, but like in a fun way!
The next morning, Ben and Kara realize Riley is missing and call the police. A Detective questions them, and the couple is very emotional. They search high and low for Riley, but she is nowhere to be found. That is because Alyssa has taken her to the house she grew up in to start their new life. Riley wants to leave and wonders where her mommy and daddy are. Alyssa promises that Riley’s daddy will come soon and then shows her a doll collection.
Ben comes clean about his past with Alyssa, and Kara is understandably hurt. It is a huge betrayal, and he should have been honest from the start. He says he has changed, but his actions speak otherwise. If Kara takes him back, I’m going to be pissed. Vanessa comes by when she hears about Riley and wants to help. Kara asks Vanessa to wait at their house while they go to a house Ben has just remembered Alyssa talk about.
At the house, Ben bangs on the door and tells Alyssa that she was right all along. He pretends to be in love with her and vows to leave Kara for her. Alyssa holds a gun while she decides if Ben is telling the truth. She then tells stories about being bitten by a dog and killing her father with rat poison. Alyssa asks Ben to kiss her and then holds a gun to his head.
Meanwhile, Kara is checking the perimeter of the house, trying to find Riley. Riley sees her mother and screams, “MOM” real loud. (She is the worst.) Alyssa knows she is being tricked and shoots Ben. Kara comes into the house, gives Ben a few napkins, and fights for her daughter. Kara and Alyssa wrestle over the gun. Kara grabs it, and pistol whips Alyssa.
Ben, Kara, and Riley are reunited while police sirens sound in the distance.
Cut to a playground where Ben and Kara plan their new lives together while Riley plats with Vanessa. Kara forgave Ben. Kara is lame.
