Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Charlie Cunningham begs her mom, Amber, to let her switch from her small private school to a public high school, wanting to prove to her (and to herself) that she’s changed since being kicked out of school last year. Growing up without any luxuries, Amber works overtime as a doctor in order to give Charlie the finer things in life. It’s also her way of making up for her divorce two years ago, and she worries that Charlie blames herself for the separation. Amber is concerned Charlie will return to her old ways, falling into the wrong crowd and getting mixed up in drugs and alcohol, but she reluctantly agrees. The new school starts off well; Charlie receives good grades and praise from her teachers and joins the robotics team – until she falls in with the wrong crowd, starts abusing synthetic weed, and becomes a shell of her former self. (2021)
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with a voice-over and flashback of a little girl and her dad. Brittney grew up in a car racing family, and after her father’s untimely death, she decides to take up racecar driving. Cue cars speeding around a race track.
Brittney meets her hunky racer teacher named Andrew, a former NASCAR racer. (Wow, I’m so outside my element talking about race cars. Haha!) That is okay because neither does Brittney, but she is behind the wheel in no time with Andrew. He keeps his eyes on her more than he does on the road.
Not only does Brittney drive it like she stole it on the track she also does that to get to work at a Bed and Breakfast. Brittney works with her fiance Kevin. Kevin will take over his mother’s business, who is a ball buster in the BEST way.
Andrew continues to give Brittney lessons and obsesses over her. in a car accident, he hit his head, and something knocked loose to make him a little cray-cray. (A nurse explains this in more clinical terms, but you get the point.) Andrew pushes Brittney to go pro and tells her to bring Kevin to show him how good she is. He wants to see Kevin, so he can kill him? Yes, that is exactly what he does. Andrew runs him over with a race car. Oh, wait, no, that is just a fantasy.
When Kevin does show up to the track, Andrew races him around to scare him. He also eavesdrops on their conversation and overhears Kevin’s address. Then he breaks into his car and high jacks it. Then he finds Kevin’s ex-Shelly’s car and parts it in Kevin’s driveway. It is a convoluted plan, but it works! Brittney sees Kevin with his ex and gets jealous.
Big shot racer, Mario, opens up a rival race car driving school. Andrew tampers with his cars to put him out of business, but his plan goes sideways when Brittney test drives one of Mario’s cars and gets into an accident. Brittney is sent to the hospital, and Mario is killed. The accident doesn’t deter Brittney from pursuing her passion for racing.
Kevin really wants Brittney to quit racing and focus on running the Bed and Breakfast. Brittney thanks Andrew for teaching and believing in her, but she will need to put her NASCAR dreams on the back burner.
Andrew runs over Kevin’s mom for some reason. You’d think he would want her alive to run the Bed and Breakfast. Then he spray paints by the body to make it look like a gang-related crime? (Which is problematic.)
Kevin gets a WEIRD phone call telling him that his mother has been murdered. Instead of comforting her husband to be, Brittney encourages him to sell his mother’s business so that she can focus on racing again. He breaks up with her because she kind of sucks.
Brittney doesn’t seem to care because she enters into races and kisses Andrew. She tells him that she is attracted to him but isn’t ready to date. yet! (Why is she leading this man on?) Then they enter Brittney into a low-level race, and Andrew is intense. He gets furious when she doesn’t win and screams in her face calling her a “chimpanzee.” Brittney tells him that she will never ever love him because of the way he talks to her.
Andrew recalibrates and apologizes; then, he pulls some strings to get Brittney into another race.
Kevin and his ex-girlfriend Shelly look into Andrew and his past. They think he highjacked their cars to set them up to look like they were having an affair. Andrew sees that Kevin is onto him and attacks him. Andrew then ties Kevin up in his garage and tells him about his plan to explode a car at 200 MPH or something. Andrew drugs Kevin and throws him in the truck of a race car? (I’m not sure if race cars even have trunks. Why would they!)
It is the day of the race, and Kevin is in the race car somewhere. Brittney races around the track as Kevin tries to untie himself and thumps around the car. Brittney hears the noise and doesn’t want to get to 200 MPH, but Andrew screams at her. She has flashbacks to conversations we’ve already seen, and thoughts of her father cause her to hit the breaks. Blowing her chances to go pro but unknowingly saving herself and Kevin.
Andrew runs down to the track with a tire iron and knocks Brittney out. Kevin unties himself and jumps out of the car. The men get into a fistfight, but Brittney grabs the tire iron and smashes Andrew in the face. Kevin calls the police, and when they show up, Kevin runs away and jumps into the car speeding up to 200 MPH (This is like Speed, with no Sandra!), and blows himself up. Byeeeeee!
Kevin and Brittney get married and race off to their lives together.
Side Note
Minority Report: Kevin, Nurse, Shelly, Police
I’m pouring it up for a change of scenery. That was nice and I know nothing about racing and still don’t.
