When lead ballerina Clare Fitzgerald (Mullins) is let go before the Christmas season’s Nutcracker performance, she’s beyond devastated and jumps at the opportunity to visit her aunt Bridget (Langrishe) in England during the holidays. Once there, she meets Liam (Hendrix), a local professor and historian who is helping Aunt Bridget preserve the family manor. Clare discovers that Christmas Regency balls were once held at the manor, prompting aunt Bridget to propose they hold a ball as part of Liam’s presentation to the preservation society. As Clare and Liam work together, the two also waltz into a new romance. (2021)
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Claire is a dancer who needs to get lower in her plies. I’m not the only one who thinks so; her dance instructor, Sarah, tells the dancer that she is too old and needs to take time to relax and think of what is next for her career. (Rude, but honest!)
Aunt Bridgett invites Claire to England since she has free time for the holidays. Once she arrives, Claire meets a professor named Liam; he is obsessed with preserving the building as a historical landmark.
To show off the estate, Aunt Bridgett and Liam decide to throw a ball so the historical committee can see the value in making it a landmark. Claire agrees to choreograph the dances, and Liam will focus on historical accuracy.
At Aunt Bridgett’s dance studio, Claire recruits some dancers for the ball. Claire teaches everyone the dances, and it is pretty dull to watch.
Liam and Claire go searching for a Christmas tree, and he inexplicably changes his shirt mid-scene. Liam has a nice body, but I have no clue WHY that happened. They carry a Christmas Tree back to the estate, singing “Oh Christmas Tree,” with the words changed to sing about how heavy it is.
A mishap at Liam’s apartment causes him to move into the estate. He saves a box of old photos of the estate from water damage, but it gives them a more aged look.
It snows, and Claire runs outside and spins around while screaming, “It’s Magical!!!!” She runs into Liam, and they have an almost-kiss moment. Claire then considers staying and not going back to Boston. But then she does go back for a dancing job but then follows her “feet to where her heart is.”
It is the night of the Christmas Ball, and everyone dances to the most annoying muzak version of The Nutcracker. Claire and Liam make out on the dance floor like a sorority girl at a wedding.
Claire stays and plans to take over her Aunt’s dance studio. Oh and the estate is declared historical.
Side Note
Minority Report: None
I’m sorry, the leads in this movie were NOT attractive enough/much too old for their roles.
