Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Emily is a successful PR executive who seems to have everything going for her: she owns her own firm, has a wealthy inheritance, and a beautiful daughter. Even couples therapy is going really well and her husband, Kyle, is about to move back in. So, when a woman named Lily shows up on Emily’s doorstep claiming to be her half-sister, Emily takes her in with open arms. Kyle, however, starts acting strange. Lily agrees to take a DNA test, but in the meantime Emily and her new sister get to know each other–they hang out, run errands together, and Emily even invites Lily to start working at the firm. She is family after all. Emily is suddenly poisoned and Kyle blames Lily. But, after Lily’s DNA test comes back as a match, Emily thinks her husband may be the culprit since therapy has taken a turn. When Emily is completely at a loss as to who she can trust, Lily explains everything. Stars Mena Suvari and Joy Nash (2023).
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Iconic Geriatric Millenial (maybe Gen X) actress Mena Suvari play’s Emily, who is in couples therapy with her husband, Kyle. They are struggling with feelings of inadequacy while raising their young daughter.
Kyle and Emily work at the same generic PR company together but drive separately. Emiy’s parents founded the company, and since their tragic passing, Emily has been running the business.
Emily heads home for an interview with a babysitter and almost runs the woman over in the driveway. The woman’s name is Lily, and she is new to town from Texas. Kyle isn’t on board with the babysitter, and he has good reason to. Lily admits she isn’t interested in the babysitter job; Lily tells Emily that she is her older sister and gives her a birth certificate. Kyle kicks Lily out of the house.
Emily vents to her co-worker Cassie about everything that is going on, and Cassie helps her social media stalk, Lily. There is no trace of her. They do, however, see her standing in the parking lot, waving to them. Lily and Emily go to do a DNA test together.
While waiting for the results, Lily shares that she grew up in a boarding home and didn’t want to meet her parents because she didn’t forgive them for sending them away. Emily was two and didn’t remember her sister, but Lily talks about details that only someone who grew up with her would know. (Like Emily’s favorite stuffed animal.) Emily looks at old photos and calls the boarding school, which doesn’t have records from the 90s.
When looking around, the home doesn’t turn up anything; Emily visits an old storage locker of her parents. It is a creepy place, and the owner says he is surprised because she is the second person to see this specific locker in the past week. Emily is alone looking at items when a masked attacker jumps her.
Kyle picks up the DNA test results, which is weird, Lily is NOT a match, and Emily asks her to leave. Then she asks Kyle to move back in because he has been stepping up and caring for things. Emily tells him he belongs in the home because they are a family.
They start driving to work together, and things look up for the family until Emily finds the REAL DNA results in Kyle’s car trunk. Emily confronts Kyle and feels totally betrayed.
Emily apologizes to Lily and invites Lily to live with her and to work for the PR company. Lily puts on a blazer and wins over a BIG client named Aurora. Emily is impressed, but not enough to trust Lily with her own portfolio.
To try and relax, Emily enjoys some wine in a hot tub. That is until a live wire electrocutes her by “accident.” (Kyle was the last person to call the pool guy…)
Cassie sees Kyle at a divorce lawyer’s office in town and tells him he needs to tell Emily or she will. The office work environment is not great!
Lily talks about the accident that got her kicked out of the house. Lily’s mother fell down the stairs and in front of a car. The mother was paralyzed for the rest of her life. The parents thought Lily was a Bad Seed.
Money goes missing from Emily’s account. Emily is concerned and thinks someone is forging her signatures. The stress causes Emily to pop off on Lily when she sends a client proposal without approval and almost loses the Aurora client.
Someone trips Cassie in the stairwell while she is closing up the office. Emily rushes to be by her side and is concerned about the similarities to the story that Lily told her about their parents.
A work yacht party happens even with all the drama going on, and Emily gives Lily her mother’s necklace to wear. Emily gives a speech and impresses their new potential partner, Thomas. (Played by Lifetime Movie regular
Matthew Pohlkamp.) He is very sophisticated and less corporate. After they flirt for a bit before he leaves. Then someone pushes Emily overboard and into the water.
Detective Timmons interviews Emily and Lily. He thinks that someone tried to kill Cassie. Kyle was the last person to swipe in with a key card.
Emily changes the locks to the house and stops talking to Kyle. He confronts Emily in the front yard and tells her about hiring a PI to look into Lily’s background. He tries to convince Emily that Lily is behind everything shady that has been going on.
Lily suddenly slips to LIFETIME VILLIAN instantly and pulls a gun on Emily. She is jealous of everything Emily has and feels entitled to it. Lily also killed a brother they both shared by smothering him. Kyle knocks Lily out and stops her sudden insanity.
The police show up and arrest Lily.
Emily’s family and friends throw her a surprise party. Lily is not on the guest list. Thomas, however, is invited. He is a new love prospect since the divorce with Kyle has been finalized.
Side Note
Minority Report: Cassie, Aurora, Marty, Detective,
Everything about this movie was fine, but man, I wanted them to deliver more on the TWISTED SISTER of it all. I’m sure Joy Nash could have pulled off a more nuanced performance if her character reveal wasn’t shoehorned into the last three mins. of the film.

I liked the movie, though a bit predictable, and you may want to change the synopsis from poisoned to electrocuted.
Good catch! TY!
