Jules Baker thinks her problems are over when her abusive husband Billy is killed after a struggle and fire that destroys their house. As she rebuilds her life and home, rumors swirl around town–“that’s the one that killed her husband” and problems with the insurance have fingers pointing at Jules when it’s found out that the fire was set intentionally. After a series of frightening events and the fact that she thinks she keeps seeing her dead husband, Jules believes she may be going crazy. Or is Billy actually still alive and coming for her, ready to destroy everything she’s re-built? Stars Tamala Jones, Tisha Campbell, Brian White, Lamon Archey, Brooklyn Sudano and Jack e Harry (2023).
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Jules has an incredible wardrobe and neon yellow nails, but she also has an emotionally and physically abusive husband. Billy hit her and set the house on fire when she tried to serve him divorce papers. Billy tries to kill them both, and he parishes in the house fire.
6 months later, Jules is moving on with her life. She hires a contractor named Kenny to rehab her house and bikes to work as a painting instructor. A student in the class asks her out on a date, but Jules tells Paul that she isn’t ready. She works on a self-portrait and feels like she has discovered her strength. She is uneasy, though, because Jules sees Billy at every turn. It is her mind playing tricks on her, or is it?
Around town, Jules is known as the Lethal Lover, and people gawk at her while she is at brunch with her friend Dana.
Strange things start happening around her house like the thermostat being set low. (Billy liked the house cold.) Jules visits with her therapist and talks through how she has been feeling about Billy’s ghost lurking in her mind. He tells her that she has made a lot of progress and encourages her to find the fulfillment she deserves.
Detectives show up and investigate Billy’s death, and Jules is a person of interest. They stop payments from Billy’s life insurance.
Paul takes Jules out for a casual date, and he talks to her about moving on from her husband’s death, and she shares that she sees him everywhere. She is glad that bastard is dead. Paul invites Jules to his karate class to help build her confidence.
Jules comes home and finds a smashed picture, and the thermostat has been changed again.
The therapist goes out for a jog and is taken out by a hit-and-run. The driver behind the wheel speeds off… could it be BILLY!?
Jules takes a self-defense class and considers just getting a gun because it would be easier. Paul helps her envision what she would do if she ran into him on the street. Jules shares how Billy manipulated her and the toll it had on her mental health. (There is some good writing here, getting into the nitty gritty of domestic abuse and the toll it takes on its victims other than bruises.)
After more strange things happen at the house, like the fridge being left open and the garbage disposal running, Jules hires Nikki Blonski as her lawyer and asks her to file an order of protection against her dead husband. Nikki Blonski is like “WTF?”
THEN Jai from Queer Eye OG shows up!
THEN, THEN Jackée Harry shows up!! She plays Billy’s mother and tells Jules that grief has gotten to her too. She thought she saw Billy by his office downtown. Jules asks if Billy could be faking his own death. Jackée Harry kicks her ass out of her house.
While trying to salvage a vandalized painting, Jules hears someone behind her. It is Billy. He literally says, “Boo!” Billy tells her that he killed her therapist, and Jules screams for help. Paul storms into the art studio, and so does Detective Walker. They don’t see Billy and think Jules is hallucinating.
Dana talks to Billy and can confirm that he is alive. That is a liability for Billy, so he pushes her down the stairs and kills her. The death is enough to get Detective Walker to exhume Billy’s body.
Jules comes up with a plan to lure Billy to her and uses Paul as bait. It works, but Billy is hooking up with the neighbor, who thinks she and Billy are meant to be. Billy was just using her and kills Naomi. Then he chases Juiles around the house.
Billy and Paull punch one another while Jules calls 911. Then she uses her self-defense skills and doesn’t even break one of her neon yellow nails! Speaking of nails, Jules nail guns Billy in the chest and then in the damn head as police officers arrive.
Jules has an art show, and it is a huge success. She also gets her insurance money back oh and is dating Paul.
Side Note
Minority Report: Jules, Billy, Detective Char, Paul, Dana, Linda, Devin,
Did anyone else notice that MANY Uncopled cast members were in this movie? Maybe they were filming in Canada at the same time this movie was being produced.
