Recap/Wine Thoughts

Inspired by True Events

Fey, third-generation island native and granddaughter of a real estate giant Frank Connolly, is found half dead in a ravine with a severe head wound. Her friend doesn’t survive and apparently commits suicide.

Three months later, Fey struggles with extreme anxiety and rubs a button that belonged to her friend Maddie. She has hot parents, though! Beth and Frank support their daughter as she recovers and attempts to return to life as usual. Frank buys Fey a bird to help her feel better.

Frank works on BUISSNESS things, while Beth wears cute outfits and lives her dream life as a trophy wife. (Oh wait, she is a realtor. Boo!) They are building a hotel for the remote tropical island they live on.

Curt, a teen who saved Fey’s life and is smelly like Jerky, joins the family for dinner. He shows Frank his hunting rifle, and it backfires, causing Fey to go into a seizure brought on by panic. The doctor recommends a therapist from the mainland, but Frank seems unopen to his daughter leaving the island. (Even to treat her PTSD or go to college!)

A mysterious blond woman enters the reality office looking for Frank, but she abruptly leaves after seeing Beth.

As a car goes by, Fey vents to her friend Ali about wanting to leave the island. The car backfires and triggers another panic attack. Beth and Frank rush to help their daughter.

Fey rests and showers as her parents fight about some marriage infidelity. It seems Beth may have left Frank while Fey was in a coma.

Fey goes to dinner with Curt to get away from her parents arguing. While they eat, Fey shares some of her visions in her dream about red sand beaches on the island. Cuet tells Fey that he likes her and wants to be a part of her family. This causes Fey to hyperventilate, which is so rude. (Sure, Curt smells like meat, but damn, girl!) Fey lays the law with Curt and tells him that she doesn’t like him. He won’t accept it.

When Curt brings Fey home, her parents are frantic. Beth is angry, and Frank screams at Curt in the driveway.

Fey meets with Ali in the middle of the night. She tells her that she suspects Maddie didn’t kill herself and breaks into the town’s historical center to look at old maps for a red sand beach. They get busted. (Which doesn[‘t mean much because her dad owns the island.)

The mysterious blonde woman shows up looking fabulous in a hardware store. Beth confronts her, and the woman calls Beth a cheater. Then the blonde threatens Beth and tells her to let her husband know he needs to “do the right thing.”

Beth comes clean about her mental breakdown when she left the island to be with another man. Fey is understanding, even if it hurt when her mother abandoned her.

Fey thinks she finds the red sand beach and hits her head again. She is close to remembering, but is someone trying to keep her from recalling the past? Frank asks the town doctor to drug his daughter.

Curt continues to stay around and creep Fey out. Curt is the type of guy who taps on bird cages to rile them up.

Fey gets ice cream with Ali, and Ali opens up about an abusive father. The ice cream shop owner gives them free ice cream after eavesdropping in on their conversation. The friend date is cut short when Frank sees them together. (He thinks Ali is a bad influence.)

Fey writes in her diary, and the voiceover is WILD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then she screams into a pillow and hides her thoughts in a picture frame. Fey thinks her parents are the WORST and is totally “teenagering” out.

Frank levels with his daughter and asks her to chill the fuck out, and he will show her the beach with the red sand. They then go out for a family bowling night, and Frank is INTENSE.

Ali encourages Fey to go with her for a walk around the island to help jog Fey’s memory. Ali is way too invested in her friend, and I’m starting to think she has an alterer motive. Fey begins to text Ali in the middle of the night when her panic attacks are at their peak. (She also talks to her bird about being in a cage and making the whole thing a metaphor for her life on the island.)

Beth catches Frank with the blonde woman and screams at him! He explains that he is in some financial trouble and the woman is a loan shark.(She has bad luck at night because later she steps on shattered glass from the picture frame)

Fey has flashbacks and remembers Curt being on the red sand beach. He dragged Maddie out of the tent and hit Fey with the but of his shotgun. Or so she thinks. It sends her into a full panic attack, and she screams to her parents that Curt killed Maddie.

In a poorly photoshopped picture that Beth Googles, she sees Curt as the mystery woman’s son. Beth calls Frank to warn him, and Curt bangs on the front door terrorizing Fey and Beth.

Curt breaks in through a window and points a gun at the mother/daughter duo. He tells them that Frank made him kill Maddie. Curt told his mom, and she blackmailed Frank to keep his secret.

Frank shows up and tells them that Curt is crazy. Frank then demands to know what Curt did to his daughter, and it seems he raped her while unconscious. (Ewwww, did we have to drop that in there?) While they argue, Fey and Beth run out of the house. Fey knocks over a shelve, and the hidden acceptance letter from NYU conveniently falls into her hands.

Beth apologizes to her daughter in a teary monologue. I think Fey might be a lesbian. I honestly have no clue WTF is happening. Beth sends her daughter off in a boat just as Frank catches up with them. He is abusive as hell and tells Beth she betrayed him. Frank is most concerned about his reputation on the island.

Fey hits Frank with a log and tells him she doesn’t want to be his daughter. The police come onto the scene and yell at him to “Drop the stick!”

The freaking Sheriff Joe gets a monologue too! Wrapping up some loose ends with the button, and apparently, Joe was Maddie’s father?!?!

Joe throws Frank into the cop car and explains even more details that no one cares about. The movie ends. Thankfully!

  1. Her friend Ali is beautiful. Love the magenta coloring in her hair. The movie is weird af. The only likable characters are the mother and Ali.
    The others are vaguely disturbing.
