Samantha goes home to help her love struck sister, Emily, during the holidays. She discovers that Emily and Tony can not be together unless Samantha attracts and dates the unpleasant Parker Williams, an owner of a competing winery.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie begins with a Christmas in LA!
Ali Moyer is a baker with bangs. She recently went through a breakup with her ex, Graham. We see their relationship through a vignette of flashes. They seem to have a sweet relationship. Things must have ended badly because Ali x-es through his face on his family’s Christmas card.
Graham works for a tech company and misses his fiancee. He breaks the news to his family that he won’t be home for Christmas due to a video game deadline. They don’t take it well, and he decides to go to Minnesota as a surprise!
Jeannie, Graham’s mother, looks horrified when he knocks on the door and tries to rush him outside because she invites Ali to spend Christmas with the family since Graham wasn’t coming! Mindy, Graham’s sister, has kept in touch with Ali on social media. Graham is understandably upset and leaves to pout in an elaborate manger lawn decoration. Mindy talks Graham
Dennis, Graham’s father, comes home with Elliott, who is back from college. Ali has been helping Graham’s brother study for finals.
Graham suggests a family game night to ensure he is not alone with Ali, who wants to discuss their separation. He makes Ali look bad in a game of Wearwolf. In return, Ali makes Graham look bad by clogging the toilet and blaming it on him. Graham. She saves the day with a plunger.
THEN THE BABY JESUS IS STOLEN!
Graham and Ali try to find a replacement and aren’t successful.
At a Christmas holiday party at a used car shop with goats…, Ali and Graham are approached by hot people. Jess flirts with Graham, and Brady is interested in Ali. That is until a goat chases her around because Graham puts food pellets in her pocket.
Later, at a bar, Jess and Ali have some coded banter about dick size. (See candy canes) Graham and Ali continue to use the hot people to make each other jealous.
Graham is too distracted by Mindy hooking up with another girl at the bar who isn’t her girlfriend. Mindy admits that she and Heather have broken up. Graham tells his sister that she can talk to him.
Graham works later into the night and plays his breakup with Ali back in his mind. While Ali tries to sleep, she remembers their proposal.
Ice fishing happens, along with more couples arguing.
While baking, Jeannie mentions a glowing review in an LA magazine about her baking business. Graham was supposed to help Ali build a food truck but didn’t after the separation. It leads to a bake-off in the kitchen, and Graham uses all the butter in the kitchen. Ali, uses a tub of butter she finds in the garage.
At dinner, the hot people are invited, and it would create tension if everyone wasn’t accidentally getting high from THC butter from the garage. It is a very emotional dinner, causing everyone to go on their own way.
Jess takes Graham to DA CLUB and asks if he is “a little fruity,” then she introduces him to her roommate and invites him to partake in the Devil’s threeway. (Unfortunately, Graham freaks out and leaves! Boo!)
Ali and Brady go to the used car lot, and it seems like he is more interested in selling her a car than he is into her as a person.
The sexual tension is too much for Ali and Graham, and they have hate sex. The following day, they talk, and Graham explains he was working so hard to try and provide for his family and neglected her. Ali admits that she did communicate her feelings enough. Then Jeannie comes into the room with breakfast in bed for Ali. She is surprised to find Graham in Ali’s room and gives him relationship advice while Ali hides under the blankets.
The family all go to church, and Graham tells Ali that she humped some sense into him. He tells her that he forgives her, and she laughs; she is the one who should forgive him.
They open presents, and Graham’s luggage finally arrives. When they realize that Graham didn’t bring presents for anyone, they decide to blow off some steam with a family game of hockey. (Cause, why not at this point.)
Dennis passes out on the ice during the game and has no pulse. He seems to have had a heart attack, and Graham administers CPR as Ali calls the paramedics. The traumatic event causes the fighting to stop between Ali and Graham. He wishes her well Ali goes home after Christmas, and Dennis recovers quickly.
Ali leaves but then returns, and they realize they are in love. They kiss while the family watches on and cheers.
It turns out the dog was stealing the baby Jesus.
One year later, Ali and Graham host Christmas and are excited to show everyone Ali’s new cookie truck. They are also engaged. The end!
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Daniel Bacon not playing a Mayor for one! Yay!
The movie had so much potential but the tone was all over the place.
