Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Inspired by true events. Looking to spice things up, Lucy and her boyfriend assume fake names and role play meeting for the first time in a hotel bar. But then days later, Lucy sees a news report about a missing persons case where the victim has the same name that she just used. Starring Rebecca Liddiard, and Marshall Williams (2024).

Recap/Wine Thoughts.

The movie delivers on the title RIGHT AWAY. A woman with red lipstick is strangled and left crying on a concrete floor.

Cut to a Chicago couple, Lucy and her hunk boyfriend, Roy. He is shirtless from the start, so we are into that! Not only is he hot, but he also brings flowers to Lucy’s job, much to the annoyance of her boss, Odette. Odette seems to hate Roy. Even though there is a lot of romance, Lucy feels like something is up. He asks her to spice up their relationship with some role-play.

I know Miley says she can buy herself flowers, but this guy can GET IT!!!!

The next day, Lucy receives a gift with a silk scarf and a blonde wig. The note inside tells her to show up at the Lakeview Bar and say her name is Maggie. Maggie is a bad, bad girl. When Lucy tells Odette about the particular date, she thinks it is a fine, if not a little inappropriate, for a work conversation.

It is the most unsexy game of dress-up.

Lucy/Maggie puts on red lipstick and heads to the bar; she is surprised to see Roy in a letterman jacket and using the name Jimmy. Lucy’s lipstick ruins the fantasy; he tells her it is off and wipes off the makeup. Then they have sexy time.

I think it is rude the news put socialite in quotes.

A news story breaks about a missing socialite named Magnolia or Maggie. The ex-boyfriend Dan is a suspect in her disappearance, and journalist Lucy is disturbed by the story. She calls Roy to ask him if he knows her, and he quickly gets off the phone. Lucy pitches her next story about the missing woman to learn more about the case.

Lucy talks to a Zaddy Detective, and he tells her there isn’t really a story.

Roy makes dinner for Lucy and wants to enjoy some TV time, but she is more interested in Magnolia’s social media. Then Lucy has a WILD dream where Magnolia is basically Bloody Mary. The obsession goes even deeper, and Lucy spends all her time on the story.

We’ve established this man as being hot, AND he cooks!??! (Red flag: he says “pasta” weirdly.)

Lucy visits Magnolia’s apartment and is followed by someone in a black hoodie. She talks the doorman into letting her in and runs into Magnolia’s preppy boyfriend, who tells Lucy to mind her business. Then, he instantly changes his mind and does a full-on interview with Lucy. He tells her that Magnolia is very close to her mother and not his girlfriend; they are just friends with benefits. He also shares that Magnolia had a strained relationship with her mother. He shows her a picture, and Lucy recognizes the silk scarf.

Lucy calls up Zaddy Detective again and tells her about her suspicions about Roy being a Magnolia stalker. After the Zaddy Detective talks to Roy, he gets angry at Lucy for even thinking he abducted Magnolia. Roy has a solid alibi and breaks up with Lucy. She tries to apologize and physically stop him from leaving, but he rushes off and texts her to send him his things.

She was getting a little desperate here.

Odette tells Lucy that Roy sucks and she deserves better. It is the speech she needs to keep digging for the story. Lucy goes out with the silk scarf on and questions guys at a fancy bar Magnolia went to. Roy is there too and asks Lucy what she is doing following him. He is there for a work meeting, but she forgot he told her about his client.

Dan mistakes Lucy for Maggie, and she almost pepper-sprays him. He offers to set up a meeting with Magnolia’s mother. Dan tells Lucy that he trusts her and even offers her a ride home, which Lucy declines, giving her stalker ample time to stake her and then attack her on the way to her car. She knees him in the balls, and the stalker runs off.

Just a strange guy approaching you on the street! NBD!

Detective Zaddy is BACK AGAIN! He tells Lucy to stop being so stupid.

Zelda, Magnolia’s mother, is not open to speaking with Lucy when she ambushes her, but Lucy won’t take no for an answer. Zelda demands to know why Lucy is prying on her family’s affairs. Zelda and Magnolia value privacy. Lucy decides to go off the record to get the information she needs to FIND Magnolia. Zelda tells Lucy about a boy from college who harassed her. Lucy takes a journal of Magnolia’s from college and learns the boy’s initials were JD.

Mommie Dearest?

Dan’s full name is Joshua Daniel Brooksbank…. is her JD?

Odette tells Lucy that she has to go to the police with the information and lock herself in her home until they find Dan. Well, she only stays for a short time. She goes over to Roy’s house?!?!?!?!?!

Roy makes Lucy tea and accepts her apology. Then Lucy gets a phone call from Zelda, who has suddenly remembered that JD stands for James Dean. The college stalker went by the name Jimmy and wore a red letterman jacket. Lucy makes a run for it, and pepper sprays Roy. Then she pulls an axe on him and demands to know what is happening.

Christina! Bring me the Axe!!!!

Roy tells Lucy that he was in love with Magnolia in college, and then when he saw her at the college reunion, he became obsessed and thought of the role-playing game. Lucy kicks him in the balls again and screams for Magnolia. (Who we’re assuming is in the house.)

The crazy/hot scale is real.

Magnolia is in the house and not in the mirror. (This time!) She is wearing the red lipstick that Roy makes her wear. Magnolia runs upstairs and grabs a knife. She stabs Roy and saves Lucy. Roy doesn’t quit and chases after them until Lucy kicks him down the stairs.

She really had to have smeared lipstick the whole end of the movie??!!?

The woman with the red lipstick reunites with her mother and asks Lucy who TF she even is, which is a valid question. Zaddy’s Detective arrives and tells Luxy that she ISN’T stupid; she solved the case! Odette gets a pizza delivered to the hospital, and Magnolia agrees to an interview! The end.

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

This movie should have been called Woman with the Red Herring because it was trying to get me to think Roy wasn’t guilty from the get-go, even though I knew he was.

I just saw a movie with the same idea, starring that annoying girl from Big Bang.

  1. So am watching this and am annoyed with the main girl’s stylist. I am a naturally thin girl and understand the “struggle”. Yes we have them. But why is she wearing such large ill fitted clothes. She dresses like a 12yr old boy, not a grown woman. Like where are her Lifetme approved skinny jean and boots. Loved her on the Franny Drake mysteries. She can look feminine. Bad bad stylist. Back to movie…

  2. Don’t known if my post went through. But I would actually love a cozy mystery series with Lucy and her editor. But agan speaking from a fellow natural thin girl, her stylist should be fired. They made her look so frumpish and boyish. Drowning her in large clothes and then put a large black sock on her and called it a dress. *sigh*

  3. So funny that we all have differing opinions! I actually loved what Lucy was wearing — it was refreshing to not see someone in typical “basic b****” clothes. I felt like it really suited her character, who seemed to be nerdy and bookish (in a lifetime way).

While the film was predictable and felt kind of… rushed and plot holey, it was definitely fun for background viewing while I was working on some handiwork.
