Inspired by real stories, Friday Night Sext Scandal exposes the practice of young boys “hunting” nude photographs of female classmates in order to share and trade with others. When 16-year-old Shawn (Anthony Timpano), a talented football athlete, lands a spot in the starting lineup, he is welcomed into the team’s inner circle. However, he soon discovers that these elite players are involved in a sick, secret game that is playing out under the noses of their community. Teenage boys are hunting for and posting nude photographs of their female classmates on a covert website where “bounties” on targeted girls are placed, and the compromising images are traded like baseball cards. Just as Shawn is riding the high of being on the team and with the girls at school, he suffers a serious knee injury that takes him out for the season. Feeling a loss of his new identity and wanting to maintain his status with his teammates, Shawn gives in to pressure and engages in his own secret “hunt,” keeping his best friend Lauren (Keana Lyn Bastidas), and strong-willed mother, Lucinda (Tara Nicodemo), from knowing. But when the site and nude photographs of the teenage girls are discovered, Lucinda and others fight to hold those accountable, only to learn a devastating truth about those involved. Devyn Nekoda also stars.
Recap/Wine Thoughts.
The movie starts with football, and all these guys are yelling, “Okkie.” I don’t understand football, so IDK! We see the High School athletes in the locker room, and Shawn Martins is the up-and-coming star of the team. The older guys couldn’t be less impressed because he is JV.
Shawn does yard work and helps around the house, much to the delight of his firefighter single mother, Lucinda. Over dinner, he tells her the good news about making the team and asks to go to a senior party. His BFF, Lauren (They make a playlist for one another), makes fun of him for wanting to hang out with meathead jocks.
The party is lame; it’s all jocks chugging vodka and looking online (Darkweb?) for nudes of their female classmates. The website is called HNTD (Hunted), and the guys call themselves Hunters. They try to get nudes from girls and post them on the website for other guys to gawk at. Shawn is disturbed, but he gets peer pressured into it. He meets a girl named Brooklyn. Shawn hooks up with Brooklyn, who is a hot cheerleader. They start dating.
We get a montage of Shawn and Brooklyn dating inner cut with him hanging with the guys. Shawn receives a link invitation to the HNTD website and starts pressuring his girlfriend to send him nudes. After they have sex while his mom is out, Shawn takes a selfie. Brooklyn tells him that if he wants some “hot” photos, she will send him pics for his eyes only. They pinky promise to keep it that way. PINKY PROMISE!!! Doesn’t that mean anything?!?!
In practice, Shawn hurts his knee and is out for the rest of the season. He feels like he is nothing without football, and his mom and Lauren try to cheer him up. Brooklyn even seems to be over Shawn and stops returning his texts; they break up on his first day back at school.
Shawn becomes addicted to the HNTD and looks at pictures of girls instead of working on rehabilitating his leg. He is also moody and helps around the house less. When Shawn sees Brooklyn in a selfie with another guy, he revenge porns her and posts her pics on HNTD.
The jocks hang out and look at pics together. They get a challenge from another school to get pics of the band girls in exchange for the girl’s swim team. Shawn is put in an awkward position because BFF Lauren is in the band. Shawn tells his mom and Lauren’s mom, Cara, that he wants to join the band. They think it is funny but support him.
The jocks hunt their targets, and Lauren thinks it is weird the football guys are suddenly into the band girls. Shawn laughs it off and tells her that they recently watched American Pie! (Is that like Animal House to these kids? Ugh, I’m old!)
Shawn makes a playlist and kisses Lauren. She tells him that she doesn’t feel that way about him. He hobbles away, embarrassed. Since he has failed at his mission of getting nudes, the other bro dudes start giving him the cold shoulder until he comes through.
Damn it if Shawn doesn’t become a PEEPING TOM and take photos of Lauren as she gets out of the shower from her bedroom window. (OMG, I’ve never been so disappointed in a Lifetime teen!) He posts the pics online HNTD. The guys cheer for him and call him a “Trophy Hunter.” Shawn is back in with the guys.
Other band guys blow the whole thing up by obviously oggoling Lauren. She grabs their phone and is horrified to see her naked body. The girls in the school are rightfully outraged. So is Lauren’s mom, Cara, who tells Shawn’s mom. She asks Shawn if he knows about the website, and he denies any involvement.
Lucinda goes on her son’s computer and guesses his password for HNTD. She is disturbed to find the photos of Lauren and many other girls. She doesn’t confront Shawn right away and tells him she wants to talk after school.
The school doesn’t do anything and turns the case over to the local police. Lauren is devastated. Shawn gives her a ride to school and tells her everything will be okay. Brooklyn knows that Shawn posted the photos and tells him he has no respect for women.
The police talk to Cara and Lucinda. When the mothers demand justice, the detective tells them the boys used IP blockers and are untraceable without a phone or computer. Lucinda knows she should turn her son in, but if she does, he would face charges of voyeurism and distributing child pornography. Later, when she tells Shawn what he has learned, he begs her not to turn him in.
Lauren skips school due to the bullying in person and online. Cara calls local fire and rescue when Lauren locks herself in the bathroom. Lauren ODs on pills in an attempt to kill herself. Lucinda fights to save her life.
Shawn and his mother argue, and he steals her car the next morning. Lucinda chases after him on her bike and is generally over the top. She rushes to the police station, thinking he turned himself in; Shawn, however, goes to the hospital to confess what he did to Lauren.
Lauren and Cara are rightfully upset. Cara calls Shawn a pervert and kicks them out of the hospital room. Lauren demands to know why and Shawn doesn’t have a good answer. There is not rational that would make what he did to his best friend okay. Lauren tells him that she won’t go to the police because she can’t ruin his life, like he has ruined hers.
Four months later, Shawn is back to training and his knee is healing. The coach won’t let anyone involved with HNTD back on the team. Lucinda starts a support group for parents and school administrators help deal with online harassment and bullying. They are doing better, but honestly screw them.
