When a mysterious social media account begins to post blind items about the scandals of a small-town high school, a troubled teen and her best friend set out to unmask the culprit–with deadly consequences. Stars Matreya Scarrwener, Jake T. Austin, and Quinten James (2024).
Recap/Wine Thoughts.
Marybeth is a disgusting loser on pills. (According to whoever is texting her hate messages.) Her posh friend Sophie breaks into the house to borrow (Candian Accent Please) a jacket and reminds Marybeth that she was the victim of “whatever happened” last semester. Marybeth’s dad also recently died, and her mother packs up his stuff, ruining Marybeth’s day before it has even started.
Tech nerd Ray rounds out the trio of misfit friends. They band together when confronted by the class president and editor of the school paper, Today. He started a smear campaign against Marybeth last semester and turned the whole school against her, including jock MVP Josh. (He leaked nudes of Marybeth.)
A teacher named Miss Mitchell pulls Marybeth aside and gives her a pep talk filled with cliches. She also brings it all back to herself and talks about when SHE was class president. (Pretty low, teacher.) Sophie also tries to cheer Marybeth up with a friendship bracelet, which reminds her how good of a friend she was when Sophie’s mom died.
The students in school get a follow from an account called @extracredit. The account sends rude messages about other students and calls some girl’s moms a hooker. The account threatens to leak more information about other students. Even a theater kid wears makeup to cover the bruise left by his alcoholic father. (This is not something to make fun of someone for… Marybeth seems to be the only one who agrees with me!) Toby works on getting the account shut down before the news of his parent’s foreclosure on their home leaks next.
Marybeth learns that Sophie leaked her nudes, not Josh. It seems like @extracredit knows everyone’s deepest, darkest secrets. Sophie gets canceled for being a bad friend and begs Marybeth for forgiveness.
When Marybeth’s mom finds out about the nude photos, she slut shames her daughter and tells Marybeth her father would be rolling over in her grave. The mother is blaming her daughter for her nudes leaking.
Miss M continues to be an unofficial therapist for Marybeth, and I’m calling it now. She is @extracredit and seems too involved in these kids’ lives.
Sophie goes missing, and Marybeth finds her friend at the bottom of some stairs. DEAD! The funeral happens by a pool, and I’m thinking I should have my funeral by a pool too! Marybeth takes more pills and plans a vigil in honor of Sophie.
At the memorial, everyone holds up signs that say, “Miss you, Sophie!” and Marybeth puts together a slide show of her friend’s life. Marybeth is horrified when she sees threatening signs that say, “You’re next.” Marybeth blames Toby.
While doing a Swifty Search in the computer lab, Toby gets threatening messages on all the computers and freaks out. He sets up a meeting with Rey and Marybeth and tells them that he learned Sophie was adopted illegally. Toby blackmailed Sophie into leaking Marybeth’s nudes in exchange for his silence. Toby needed to win the election and get a scholarship.
Ray and Maybeth break into Sophie’s house with Ray’s tech skills in hopes of finding evidence about Sophie’s adoption. A photo of Miss M with little Sophie. Marybeth goes to Miss M’s house and asks her if she is Sophie’s birth mother. Miss Mitchel screams at them to get out.
On their way out, they hear someone struggling in the garage. Toby is tied up and gagged. Marybeth and Ray try to help him, but Miss M stops them with a knife. She was the one who leaked the photos when Sophie talked to her about being blackmailed. Miss M also made threatening signs, is @extracredit, and accidentally killed Sophie.
It all starts making sense to the people in the movie. I’m a little lost here.
Marybeth tells Ray to call the police and chases after Miss Mitchell. Maybeth tells Miss M that it will all be okay and hugs her until the police arrive.
Everyone cheers for Marybeth when she comes back to school. She is popular and solved the case! One thing bothers Marybeth: @extracredit is still out there. Miss M never admitted to that, and Toby is in jail for releasing underage photos, but the messages still come in.
Ray and Josh try to ask Marybeth out on a date, and I’m over here like, is this movie still going?
While out on a bowling date with Josh, she gets a message from @extracredit sent from Josh’s phone. She literally runs away and calls Ray for help. Ray shows up and takes Josh, then rushes Marybeth to safety. However, Ray slips up and talks about a burner phone. Marybeth knows he is @extracredit and planted the phone on Josh.
Ray tells Marybeth he did everything for her because they are meant to be together. Marybeth tells him he is a criminal, and Josh jumps him from behind. They fight in the bowling alley, and Ray is sentenced to nine years in prison.
After graduation, Maybeth talks to a bench named in Sophie’s Honor. She is also dating Josh randomly. Even more randomly, Sophie’s dad and Maybeth’s mom are also dating. The end!

I had a hard time paying attention to this one. A bit darker than I thought and pretty boring/slow.
Nice to see the kid from the wizards of waverley place in this.!
Lifetime’s version of Gossip Girl.. I was here for it.
