Based on a true story, the movie follows Morgan (Jana Kramer) and Rodney Metzer (Austin Nichols) who were childhood sweethearts and married by the time Morgan was just 21 years old. The couple loses their first child shortly after birth but are overjoyed when they have twins a year later. Tensions began to rise when Rodney loses his job and goes into debt. Rodney blames their fights on Morgan’s drinking – even if she’d only had one – and convinces Morgan that she pushed him down the stairs in a blackout rage. The couple finally separates, and Morgan’s life begins to turn around, until Rodney gets diagnosed with cancer. Not long after, a masked intruder breaks into Morgan’s home and assaults her. Rodney shows up only minutes after the intruder is gone; when authorities question him, Rodney’s story doesn’t seem to be adding up. Does Rodney really have cancer and is he the hero that he claims to be, or has he been gaslighting Morgan for decades? J. Barrett Cooper, Denise Dal Vera and Maximo Sherman also star.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Morgan Metzer is awakened by fireworks on New Year’s Eve. She is home alone for the night with a gun by her bedside. Her husband and kids are nowhere to be seen. As she sleeps with the security cameras running, someone enters the house. The gun goes off.
Eight Years Earlier, Morgan is giving birth to her son Kevin with her handsome husband, Rodney, by her side. Kevin will have to have heart surgery, which puts the couple under stress. Rodney comforts his wife and reminds them that they’ve been together since they were 14 years old and can get through anything. Kevin doesn’t make it through the surgery. (It is very sad but good for Lifetime to depict such a challenging subject that people don’t talk about.)

Morgan comes home and cries on the closet floor. Her family tries to offer support, but she throws herself into running and wine. Things don’t seem to be going back to normal. Rodney is fired from his job for “spending too much time at the hospital.” Morgan offers to do some interior design, but Rodney shoots down the idea because she doesn’t have a degree.

With the help of some anti-anxiety medication and time, Morgan decides she wants to try to have a baby again. Rodney is happy to help!
Eight Years Later, the couple wakes up to REALLY annoying children. The kids bring up Kevin, which is so rude. (Oh, wait, Morgan throws Kevin a birthday every year.) Morgan is still on her anti-anxiety medication and goes to a grief support group. One man in the group is overcome with emotion and has to run out of the meeting. He is a single dad named Griffith, and Morgan offers him support and donuts for his kids.
New Year’s Eve 2021. The night of the attack. A masked man beats Morgan and zip-ties her. He strangles her and tells Morgan that she “belongs like this.” (YIKES!)
Rodney gets fired and blames Morgan for having him pick up the kids so she can go to her support group. (It is one of many examples in the movie of Rodney low-key manipulating Morgan.)
For Kevin’s 8th birthday, Morgan and Rodney have family and friends over. It is a tense day, and Morgan has a tough time coping with wine and a water bottle of vodka. Before the balloon release, a classmate compliments Morgan on her interior design skills, which momentarily boosts her confidence. Rodney tells Morgan that she is too drunk and acting like a crazy teenager. Morgan hits Rodney with her water bottle, and he has a bloody nose.

Morgan apologizes to her husband, but she worries about public perception. She goes for a jog, runs into Griffith, and they exchange numbers. (He also notices a bruise on her arm.) Later, he texts Morgan, and Rodney intercepts the text.
Rodney has gone through their trust money, and Morgan takes on some interior design clients to make ends meet. Morgan even hires a friend.

Rodney works out in the garage and has a great body! He tells Morgan that he has to leave town for a “job interview” on Valentine’s Day. Then he pressures her into having sex in the garage to “celebrate” and calls her a “horndog” later in front of the kids. (Which is weird.) Before he leaves, he gives Morgan a gun and then forces himself on her. Morgan finds steroids in the bathroom.
A letter shows up in the mailbox, and Rodney is PISSED. He accuses Morgan of being unfaithful. Morgan brings up the steroids and the credit card bill. Rodney slams her against the wall, and they tumble down. He won’t have her emasculate him in front of the children. Rodney blames Morgan for pushing him down the stairs and asks her parents to talk to their daughter about her lashing out. Morgan tries to explain, but they call her a liar and show her an edited video of him falling down the stairs. Rodney tells Morgan that no one will believe her, and no one will let her keep the kids if they split.

Nicole, Morgan’s friend and assistant, talks her into buying a designer purse. (A move which I VERY much support!) Morgan deserves to treat herself. When Rodney sees the bag, it sets him off. He accuses Morgan of spending frivolously, drinking too much, and hanging out with Griff, who has a criminal record. He also belittles her business. Rodney loudly brings all this up in front of the kids.
In the support group, the group leader brings up a narcissistic personality, and Morgan recognizes a lot of traits that Rodney possesses. When Morgan sees Griff, he denies writing the letter or sending emails. He understandably doesn’t want to get involved.
While at lunch with Nicole, Morgan sees an award at the country club and catches Rodney lying about Valentine’s Day. Morgan also shows Morgan a video of Rodney and Morgan fighting at the party. He hit her, and later, he threw himself down the stairs. The truth is almost too much for Morgan to handle. She comes home and finds her designer purse has been pissed in. When she asks him why, he blames the cat.

Morgan stands up for herself and tells Rodney she wants a divorce. She takes the kids and leaves.
It is Christmas time, and the couple have been estranged for some time and seem to be co-parenting well. Nicole is concerned for her friend, but Morgan reassures her everything is fine. Rodney shares some medical news and he has terminal cancer. Morgan comforts him and encourages Rodney to fight. He asks her for a second chance, and she tells him they an only be friends. (That pisses him off! He cuts the security wires to her home)
Back to the New Year’s attack. Rodney is the attacker who brutally beats Morgan in her bed while she sleeps. We see the attack in full and it is tough to watch. Morgan recognizes her husband’s eyes and begs him not to kill her husband because she loves him. Rodney rapes her and covers Morgan’s head with a pillowcase and drags her outside on the porch. Then he pretends to find her and acts like he rescued her.

Rodney throws a blanket on Morgan, and they call the police. Rodney intercepts the police and tries to downplay what happened. Morgan makes a loud clatter, and the police enter. Seeing Morgan’s state, they call for medical help. Morgan tells them that it happened, and Rodney plays the role of concerned husband. He tries to control the narrative, but the police are onto him. Morgan tells them, with a glance, that her husband attacked her. The police question Rodney, and he suggests Griff is the suspect and shows them the email. The police officer takes the phone and finds photos of Morgan sleeping. Then he searches Rodney’s car and finds the zip ties used in the attack. He is arrested on the spot
At the trial, Morgan makes a public statement. She thanks him for her children and tells him no one deserves what she endured. He is sentenced to 70 years in prison.

Gotta say up until he went full psycho (well probably always was), I understood the husband’s point of view, aside from his control issues. I am not a judge when it comes to the loss of a child by any means, so I can’t speak to that. But the wine and pills, not a good mix. Exchanging phone numbers with another man, especially behind your husband’s back, not a good decision. And I also have a problem, when both, in a relationship aren’t privy to the financials. In case of an emergency, both need to know where they stand financially. Who hides things taped to the wall like that in the bathroom? Like no one kneels down to pick stuff up. The forcing scene was painful to watch and that would’ve gotten him kicked out the house. And don’t you love when friends convince you to spend a lot of your own money on something. And YES! to competent cops that act on the spot. Wish this happened more often in real life.
First of all, you wrote that Morgan was trying to “immaculate ” her husband. I’m pretty sure you meant “emasculate”? The words mean different things, there’s a big difference.
Second, I wanna know who was supposed to be filming when the wife allegedly pushed hubby down stairs? Were the kids standing there waiting to film something? Highly doubtful. So why wouldn’t this have been questioned by anyone?
The whole thing was just icky. And the hubby was a piece of crap 💩
I need an editor!!! Thank you!
