When amateur photographer Iris notices “HELP” scrawled on a dusty window in a picture she took of an old house, she becomes increasingly convinced that the man living there isn’t as mild-mannered as he seems. Stars Mary Antonini and Jean-Paul Najm (2024).
Recap/Wine Thoughts
On a rainy night, Jennifer walks home. Two blocks away from home, a stranger tries to pick her up. Jennifer runs home, but the man kidnaps her. Jennifer’s keys are left in the door dramatically because it is a re-enactment on the TV show Unsolved Crimes! Iris watches on with a pint of ice cream. (Ummm, is she me? Tho, I prefer gummy fruity candy.)

Paul, Iris’s husband, brings home Chinese food and tries to cheer Iris up. She is suffering from depression after having a miscarriage. He gives her a camera to get his wife out of the house and see the world again. She takes pictures of her snowy town and kids at the playground. (Creepy!) Iris takes even more pictures! This time for her boss, who wants pictures of architecture.

While reviewing the photos, Iris notices writing on a window that says “Help” backward. Paul thinks Iris is overreacting, and she thinks everyone else is UNDERREACTING! (To quote Mommie Dearest.)
Iris decides to go back and take pictures of the house again and runs into the handsome owner named Robert. Everything seems normal until Iris sees a little girl in the window!!! Iris looks up missing kids online and swears she recognizes one of them. Paul wants Iris to drop it, but Iris goes to the police. (Who actually checks on things? ) Robert explains that it was just a doll, which isn’t less psychotic!

Like ALL Lifetime husbands, Paul leaves town for a two-week work trip. (Good or bad!) Leaving Iris to obsess over the little girl in the window. Iris goes back to Robert’s house and apologizes for calling the police on him. He invites her to show off the doll, but Iris isn’t going into that house with him. (She is fine going in by herself and snooping around.) Then, there is a scream from the vent, and Robert drags Iris inside. (This scene was so intense and well shot!)

Iris is now one of four girls chained in the basement. Carol and Jennifer, whose daughter May is locked in the attic, are also chained. Jennifer is the girl from Unsolved Crime! They tell Iris that there is no way out and she should not try to fight her way out. They used to be fighters, too.

Robert comes home and asks Iris to join him upstairs. He is demanding and tells Iris that there can’t be another man in her life. Roger holds Iris at gunpoint and makes her leave a breakup voicemail for Paul. To alert Paul; Iris says the baby name and a long pause. Robert has complete control over Carol (who suffers from Stockholm syndrome), and Jennifer tells Iris to obey because if one person acts out, they all suffer.
Paul apparently still needs to check his voicemail, but he is finally heading home! Once he is home, he listens to the voicemail and notices a weird pause.

Iris finds an old Polaroid camera and stores it for later. She has to cook meals for Robert and resist beating him with a cast iron skillet. Robert talks about the miscarriages Carol and Jennifer have suffered while in captivity. Iris burns his steak, and May is punished.
Paul finally checks the voicemail and brings it to the police because he thinks it is suspicious. He stops by Robert’s house to see if he knows where Iris is, and Robert is rattled. He calls Paul from an unknown number and sets up a meeting. Robert makes Iris write a goodbye letter.
Jennifer burns the TOAST!!!!!
Robert leaves angrily and leaves a door unlocked. He goes to Iris’s house and packs a bag to make it look like she is serious about leaving Paul this time.
Iris tries to convince Jennifer to leave, but Carol is set on staying with Robert because he “takes care” of her. Jennifer leaves Carol behind and rushes with Iris to get May and escape. May is the only one who can squeeze through the bars to get help. Iris and Jennifer give May a letter to deliver to the nosey neighbor and call 911. May makes it out but drops the letter. (May! You had one job!)

Robert sees the letter in the bushes on his way home and knows what his captors are up to. Robert goes to Mrs. Norris’s house to get back his daughter and lock her up. When he sees that the others are trying to escape, he rushes over and starts shooting.
Mrs. Norris calls 911 and sees the letter with Polaroids inside.

Jessica and Iris fight for their lives, getting the gun away from Robert. Jessica and Carol make it out of the house, and Iris holds Robert at gunpoint until the police can apprehend him. Everyone is saved, THE END!
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
After a slew of Lifetime True Crime movies, this movie proved that fact is scarier than fiction.
I’d like to think writer Rolfe Kanefsky is as obsessed with Mommie Dearest as I am and put in these lines into the film intentionally:
“I think they are UNDERREACTING” and “Clean up this MESSS!”
I want everyone to know that, even though I don’t know him personally, Jean-Paul Najm seems like a fun guy despite playing a baddie in this movie. He once made a cameo in a Lifetime Movie as a stripper with no lines and looked like he was having the most fun.

“Iris goes to the police. (Who actually checks on things? )” It would be great if people actually did. So many might be found if people went with their guts with when they thought something was a little off. A grown single man with no kids keeping creepy dolls should be enough for a warrant-IMO. And braids as a weapon…yes! Days shouldn’t have never passed without Paul trying to speak at least once to Iris. And that cop was super creepy. He and Robert could be brothers.
