Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Cookbook editor Colleen (Kathryn Kohut) moves into a gossipy neighborhood that is obsessed with a “Next Door”-type app. When a neighbor suddenly vanishes, the group chat pinpoints her as the prime suspect. Natalie Brown, Zach Smadu, Samantha Helt, and Josette Jorge co-star. (2023)

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Neighbor News is an app that alerts you about things happening in the neighborhood of Sunny Vista and also leads to murder. A woman with a messy house smokes cigarettes while trying to watch TV. She is interrupted by messages from the app shaming her for not being a good neighbor, and then two intruders break into her house and kill her.

Cut to Colleen, who has just moved to the neighborhood and is literally walking home from the grocery store. A friendly lady named Jillian offers her a ride, but Colleen declines. The neighborhood also has a slew of social media mommies named Ashton and Kimberley, who are very judgemental of Colleen.

Colleen drops her groceries, and I kid you not, everyone in the neighborhood notices. The men are next to pay attention, Colleen. There is a college hunk named Quinn, who flexes his pecs at her. A guy named Dan makes a cringe-worthy pun after helping her pick up her groceries. “Grape to meet you.”

Grape to meet you!

At the HOA meeting, they all tell Colleen that she needs to get on the Neighbor News app and ask her a lot of questions. Colleen tells them she is a single cookbook editor from New York looking for a fresh start. Everyone chugs wine.

Theo is the only normal one there, probably because he gives off gay BFF vibes. He fills Colleen in on all the gossip and tells her to be careful of Jillian. When Colleen gets on the app, she is immediately addicted to the catty chatter, even if the gossip is about her.

Colleen brings over a pie to her neighbor’s house and finds the smoking lady’s dead body. Colleen rushes out and into Dan’s arms. He calls the police, but everyone is gawking on the lawn. Later, Jillian asks Colleen if she is dating Dan and asks her to be discreet if she is. (Nothing is a secret in this neighborhood.)

Dan has warnings of his own and tells Colleen to keep her distance from Gay Boi Theo. She doesn’t do that and spends the night drinking wine and gossiping with Theo after she catches him snooping around her house and calling the cops on him. He talks her INTO DOING MUSHROOMS?!?!?!?? Colleen has a bad trip and almost admits to a deep, dark secret, but the Neighbor News App goes off and trips her out. (Kathryn Kohut playing silly was fun here.)

Trippin!

Theo goes missing, and Colleen can’t call the police with her concerns since she is on drugs. Dan offers to help her do some online research to track down Theo, but it quickly turns into a makeout session with wine. (This movie has had wine in every scene.) Dan tells Colleen that he is married, and she leaves angrily. On her way home, she is almost run over by a car.

The strange things don’t stop there. Someone throws a brick through Colleen’s window and calls her a homewrecker anonymously on the Neighbor News app. Dan checks on the broken window and explains that he thought Jillian told Colleen that they were marrie3d ad in an open relationship.

Colleen finds Theo’s iPad and sees that he has been working as a cam boi. Then, she uses Find My Phone to locate Theo’s last known location. He is found dead in the woods, and when the police officer shows up, Colleen admits that she and Theo were on drugs when he went missing.

Since she has found two bodies, Colleen becomes Neighbor New’s target from the Anonymous user. They claim she is the number one suspect. Colleen searches for anonymous suspects but gets distracted when Anonymous reveals that Colleen lied about her past. She is the daughter of a famous scammer.

Quinn, the pec guy, is the next to die. All his bros mourn him. (Which was kind of funny.)

Broooooooo!

Jillian invites Colleen over and kind of seduces her? Dan catches them almost kissing and is into it; he makes dinner, and Colleen downloads files from his computer. Colleen is nearly caught, so she makes out with him to distract Dan while the files download. Colleen looks at the files and finds Theo’s sexy videos.

Colleen dresses sexy to try and entrap Dan. She ties him up, and Dan is in pretty good shape. Was he the one messaging Theo??? (I’m honestly getting a little lost here.)

Someone breaks into Colleen’s house and writes “LEAVE SUNNY VISTA” in blood on her walls. Colleen messages everyone on Theo’s iPad app and invites everyone to one last Theo-style party. Colleen makes mushroom-laced cupcakes to get her neighbors to tell the truth. Colleen tells them the truth about Quinn being a drug dealer and Theo being a cam boi. (EVERYONE IS TRIPPING IN THIS SCENE!)

The influencer mommies turn out to be anonymous. They knock Colleen out and throw her into their car, but Colleen fights back, and they crash the car. Kimberley and Ashton taser Colleen and Jillian, but Colleen kicks their asses after seething, “I’m a good neighbor, Bitch.”

As the sun rises, the influencer moms are handcuffed, and Dan shows up. He tells everyone he is bi-curious. (Good for him!) Everyone laughs cause they are still on shrooms, which is the strangest ending.

LOL, murder is hilarious!

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

This neighborhood has a TON OF BUGS! Every outdoor scene had bugs flying around.

I have no idea what to think of this movie; it was tonally all over the place. While some parts were fun, the thriller aspects didn’t work.

Should you watch it? Pour it up? It was so unhinged, I think you need to see it for yourself.

  1. Looking forward to catching this because it’s directed by one of the guys from OG Degrassi!

      1. Oh, I got you!. This was also filmed in Hamilton on Lakepointe place. And it’s nice to see Zach Smadu aka “Dan” in a lighter role than he usually plays on the show Family Law. This movie is weird because it’s Canadian haha!
