Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Fifteen years after a teenage girl places her baby up for adoption, she learns that her daughter has gone missing from the adoptive parent’s home. In her search for answers, she uncovers a chilling truth and a sliver of hope that there’s still a chance to find the girl before it’s too late. Stars Romina D’Ugo, and Kelly Penner (2024).

Recap/Wine Thoughts

A teen frantically packs a bag in her creepy house in the woods as police pull up. The cop bursts into the house and screams for the teen. She manages to get outside through her bedroom window and runs into the woods. (And it is surprisingly well bundled!)

Dork Husband, we love him!

Cut to Chicago, where journalist Cynthia and her dork lawyer husband celebrate the success of their article about “Baby: Lynn.” Cynthia suffers from nightmares about giving away her baby up for adoption, a decision she regrets. Her dork husband does an excellent job of listening to Cynthia’s emotions about her past and validating her feelings. The nightmares persist, and Cynthia calls the adoption agency to check on her daughter, who is part of an open adoption. The only problem is that the adoption was fraudulent, and the case is ruled a kidnapping.

Instead of going to the police, as recommended, Cynthia does one of those 23andMe (Called here Past is Present, haha) things to see if her DNA matches that of the teenage daughter in the system. (HER PLAN WORKS!??!??!?!?!??!?) Cynthia sends Rebecca a message that they are a match and then gets the bright idea to check her Instagram. (I think Cynthia did that backward.) The social media shows that Rebecca is missing, but no missing person report has been filed. Cynthia and Dork Husband decided to leave Chicago, go to the small town where Rebecca lives, and file one on her behalf.

A man follows Cynthia around Chicago and tells her he has information about her daughter. He has them meet in an abandoned warehouse to talk about Rebecca. (Cynthia actually goes?!?!) Thankfully, Dork Husband goes with, but I don’t know how much help he is going to be. Not surprisingly, the man doesn’t want to talk and runs them over with his car instead. Dork Husband ends up in the hospital, and Cynthia is left to her own devices.

Remember, Cynthia is a journalist, so she starts a serial killer wall(actually desk top.) and uses her resources to track the car’s license plate. She bounces ideas off Emmett, her police detective friend.

What were these hats?!!?

Cynthia leaves her Dork Husband in the hospital and goes to the small-town police station, where everyone wears WEIRD HATS! The police officers aren’t welcoming and become even less so when they find out she is a reporter. (Except for a lady cop named Billie.) Cynthia pretends she has to go to the bathroom and instead sneaks into the observation room and listens in on an interview with Rebecca’s adoptive mother, Maureen. Maureen seems to be angling for something and putting on an act. Maureen’s husband, who is a cop named Gerry, is the man who tried to run Cynthia and Dork Husband.

At Rebecca’s high school, Cynthia talks with a classmate who just so happens to know EVERYTHING about Rebecca. The classmate shows Cynthia disturbing text messages Rebecca sent her classmate about being afraid of Gerry the night she escaped. Cynthia also talks to Rebecca’s boyfriend.

A smile and a few beers aren’t winning me over

Billie shows up at Cynthia’s motel and can relate to Cynthia’s concern about her daughter. They go get a drink, and Billie fishes for information Cynthia has learned. It’s all under the guise of “helping” Cynthia, but I’m not so sure of Billie’s intentions.

Dork Husband is out of the hospital and it is made even worse because he is in a boot and laid up. Emmett, who is his caretaker now, pulls security footage and gets a video of Gerry at a rental car place.

How did she think this was going to turn out?

With nothing else to do in the small town, Cynthia breaks into Rebecca’s house, steals her cellphone, and is almost caught by Gerry, who is just coming home from work and has his gun out and ready. Stuck upstairs, Cynthia calls in a domestic disturbance, and Billie shows up to investigate. This gives Cynthia a chance to escape back to the hotel, but she REALLY pisses off Gerry.

Billie and Cynthia meet and share everything they know, and Billie pushes to get drinks at the bar. Cynthia declines but invites Billie to do more sleuthing. (This time, it is in Gerry’s shady business dealings.) It turns out to be a trap; Maureen and Gerry lure Cynthia into a store unit and try to lock her up. Cynthia grabs Gerry’s knife and stabs him, but she still ends up locked in the storage unit. REBECCA IS ALSO INSIDE!!!! (Rebecca has been hiding out there, and her boyfriend has been bringing her food.)

No one thought to check here weeks ago?

Gerry isn’t doing well, but Maureen doesn’t care. She chases after Cynthia when she tries to get help and pulls out a gun. As the mothers argue about who is more neglectful, Billie pulls up. Billie is Maureen’s sister, and just as she is about to kill everyone, Rebecca gets behind the wheel of a car and runs her over.

She did it! No, SHE DID IT!

The police show up and are more confused than ever. Rebecca and Cynthia set the record straight, and Maureen is arrested. Cynthia has her next article!

Two weeks later, Rebecca comes to live with Cynthia and Dork Husband.

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

I REALLY thought Dork Husband and Emmett were going to hook up. Hahaha!

Tell me this isn’t true love!

The hats alone were with a watch, WTF?!

  1. Why the hell are the characters in these movies so incredibly stupid? First of all, why the hell would Cynthia and her hubby go to some deserted warehouse in the middle of nowhere at night to meet some strange guy who was following her?! What’s worse is they actually go into this empty warehouse. And then when a car is barreling down on them, they stand there in front of the moving car, like deer in head lights. They finally ran but even then they stayed directly in the car’s path til it hit the hubby. Idiots
