When Cassie’s sister turns up dead at a scandalous underground club, Cassie, longing for answers, gets pulled into a dark web of deceit, uncovering secrets that threaten not only her family, but her life. Stars Jessica Morris, Daniel Stine (2024).
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with a couple arguing so loud they can be heard outside their house. Miranda and Rufus get so heated that Miranda flees for her safety.
Cut to mother, Cassuem, and daughter, Ariel, who are getting ready for school. Ariel is very rude to her new stepdad, Stephen. Ariel wants to go live with her father, but Cassie asks her ex-husband to work with her and keep the custody agreement the same until Ariel is 18.
While taking a bath to destress, Cassie hears someone in the house. It is Cassie’s sister, Miranda. She has a black eye and tells Cassie that things are over with her and her abusive boyfriend. Cassie invites Miranda to stay with them until she is back on her feet. They also have an estranged brother who has a gambling problem named Kevin. Cassie was a surrogate mother figure since their dad left and mom was working all the time.
Miranda gives Ariel a beer and tries to be a cool aunt, but Cassie shuts that down. Miranda apologizes but wants to keep the party going and heads to DA CLUB with Kevin! She doesn’t survive the night and ends up strangled in an alley. (Damn, RIP Miranda.)
The next morning, Stephen is making pancakes and cheesy eggs on a WEEKDAY?!?! (He is the best husband ever.) Ariel wants to know where her cool aunt is, and Cassie laughs it off as a night out turned into a walk of shame. Cassie goes to work and is annoyed to see her brother, Kevin, in her office. He is pissed she has cut him off and claims to have no idea where Miranda is. Kevin wants his inheritance but won’t get it until he is financially responsible. He gets upset and breaks things before leaving.
Stephen helps Cassie trace Miranda’s cell phone to help reassure her that everything is okay. Cassie searches through Miranda’s things and finds a party invitation. When the police trace the phone, they find it in Rufus, the ex-boyfriend’s truck. The police also located Miranda’s body in the alley by the dumpster.
Rufus stops by Cassie’s house looking for a lock box and harrases Ariel. She calls for her parents, and they tell him to leave. Rufus threatens them and has a long rap sheet, according to the police. Rufus looks like the number one suspect, but the police do not have enough evidence.
Cassie tells Kevin through tears about their sister’s death. She demands to know what happened to Miranda. Kevin looks rough and is only concerned about getting his money. He seems unsurprised about his sister’s death.
The police give Cassie Maranda’s phone, and she is surprised to learn that her ex-husband Lyle was texting Miranda and was at the party where Miranda died. Stephen tells Cassie to take it easy and let the police do their jobs. Cassie learns the party was a sex club and gets all dolled up to go undercover. (I think Jennifer Morris likes to dress slutty because she is always going undercover as a stripper.)
At the sex club, Cassie gives the secret password (Lipstick) and puts on an Eye Wide Shut mask before going into the belly of the beast. She sees people making out on couches and finds Rufus with two ladies. He tells Cassie to get away from him, but then the club is raided. Stephen gets Cassie out of jail with his connections.
Kevin is unofficially interrogated by the police, and afterward, Cassie finds him almost drowned in a lake. She tries to ask Kevin questions, but Stephen sees them and tells Kevin to leave them alone. He gets a restraining order against Kevin and is hyper-protective over Cassie.
Stephen brings Cassie to the station with him because there is new DNA evidence. Rufus’s DNA is found under Miranda’s fingernails during the autopsy. Cassie gets a call from the coroner, who tells Cassie that Miranda was pregnant at the time of her death.
Cassie ditches Stephen and sneaks away for a meeting with someone who has information about Miranda. When Miranda arrives, she is shocked to see Rufus has been murdered and police are on the scene. Cassie calls her friend Robin for help. Robin is very confused but a good friend.
Kevin picks Ariel up from school and tells her that he needs to talk to her about something important. Lyle rushes up to the car and tells Ariel that she needs to stay away from Kevin.
Cassie meets with a therapist and tries to call secretly, but Stephen overhears the call and jokes about her having a secret affair. The next day, Cassie shows up for her appointment and finds the doctor dead.
Cassie asks the police about a paternity test to see who the father was for Miranda’s baby. The police detective says she signed an NDA to seal the paternity and shows Cassie the forged sign.
Robin also works for the police, I guess, and did the test results. Cassie calls her to see what she knows, but Robin is dealing with almost being attacked in a parking lot. She manages to get away. Robin calls Cassie and tells her that Stephen is the father.
Stephen explains that he accidentally had sex with Miranda at the sex club, and when she told him she was pregnant, he accidentally killed her. Rufus was a liability and had to go, and so was the therapist. Cassie still has Robin on the phone, who hears the whole confession. (Haha!)
Stephen grabs Cassie and holds her a knife point. Kevin and Ariel jump into action and take Stephen down with a cast iron skillet. The police arrested him and were surprised that one of them was responsible.
Cassie has everyone over for dinner, including Kevin and her ex-husband Lyle. They all move on for the trauma Stephen placed on their family.
