Synopsis (via Hallmark)

An archeologist (Chabert) and her ex-husband (Polaha), an expert in ancient Norse languages, are sent to Iceland at Christmastime to search for the legendary treasure of the Yule Lads. When others join in the hunt, the pair find themselves swept into a thrilling adventure as they race to keep it from falling into the wrong hands.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie begins with Erin Cahill on a quest. She finds a leather-bound book and looks pleased with herself, and adventurous music plays. Then we see her at home reading the book to her daughter in her house like a Christmas story.

Cut to Lacey Chabert, who is a Ph.D.-holding professor. She is continuing her mother’s footsteps and lectures on the book from her childhood that her mother, Eric Cahill, found. Lacey Chabert is approached to lead an exposition to find treasure like her mother did all those years ago. She spends her Christmas break looking through tombs and finds a symbol that she can decipher, no problem. Lacey Chabert opens a secret compartment that holds the Yule Horn or something like that.

Lacey Chabert needs help from her ex-husband, Chase Baxter. He isn’t interested in joining her for the advantage. She has always put her expeditions before him and her family. Chase is a dead language expert. Once Chase gets a taste of the case, he wants more.

They first go to Iceland. Chase asks Lacey Chabert if she is okay working together since they have been estranged. She says it is all good, and they don’t have a bickering relationship. (Which I like!) They are more like two people who know each other, flaws and all. Then they go to a church and take a floor tile with writing on the bottom. They go to a pub and translate the tile. Someone sees them and hears that they have the Yule Horn.

Lacey Chabert and Chase drive up a mountain. They hike through the snow to find more clues to the Christmas treasure. They talk about Christmases they spent together and clearly have a history that wasn’t ALL bad. They go through rocky caves and search for clues. Eventually, they find a leaver that brings rocks with etchings on them for Chase to decipher. A rock wall closes and traps them in. (YIKES!)

Another treasure hunter offers assistance to them. He throws a rope down for them to climb out. He asks for Lacey Chabert’s leather-bound journal in exchange. They get free but need to find out who the other adventurer is. Lacey Chabert and Chase find value in their friendship and appreciate one another more than ever now.

They find a cat, find the owner, and make Christmas decorations for bread. They also help the couple decorate the tree and talk about Christmas traditions. Lacey Chabert just wants one more day with her mom. She wishes Chase got to meet her before she passed away. Being in Iceland reminds Lacey Chabert of her mother.

Chase and Lacey Chabert get all dressed up for crashing a Christmas Eve Gala. They get caught up in the moment and almost make out but are interrupted by their handler. It is show time. They sneak into the Gala and look for whatever they are looking for. (I feel like I’m in an Escape Room and don’t know what is happening, but everyone else is finding clues, so I know we will get out soon enough!)

The adventure shows back up and gives advice about trusting your instincts and heart and all that. They enter a cave and find a star map. They enter a room with lots of candles, and there is also a compass that Lacey Chabert gave her mother. Her mother had found the treasure and wanted her daughter to pursue life’s same adventures. She leaves a note for Lacey Chabert to tell her how special she is.

Lacey Chabert and Chase kiss, and they don’t see the northern lights. (Does that happen here?)

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

I didn’t REALLY understand what happened in this movie, but I liked it!

Kristoffer Polaha continues to think he is Jimmy Stewart. Will someone just give this man a biopic already?

  1. I only saw the last 20 minutes of The Christmas Quest and even at that small amount of time, I thought I would gag. Absolutely no chemistry between Polaha and Chabert. Silly premise, silly script, silly everything. I very much like Polaha but am tired of Lacey–I wish she would stay off Hallmark for a couple years to give us all a rest.
