Vi (Skovbye), better known as Princess Violet of Wingravia, adores the privileges of being a royal, if none of the responsibilities. After being disappointed by Vi one time too many, the Queen (Durance) decides to test her daughter’s mettle once and for all and issues an ultimatum: Vi must pass a vigorous leadership boot camp in Colorado or lose the throne to her uncle. At boot camp, Vi and her fellow cadets are put through a rigorous grind under the uncompromising supervision of Captain Ryan Douglas (Klena).
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Wagravia in Eastern Europe, Princess Violet enjoys chocolate in bed, and her days are filled with Christmas obligations. She is petulant, entitled, and spoiled. Her mother sends her to a boot camp for spoiled rich people/celebrities.
There is a K-Pop Star, a Pro-Football player, Billionar’s son, and a princess. They need to prepare for boot camp. Private Ryan and Squibby run the program. The cadets are first tasked with making cookies, but they fail. Then, they have to hit the ropes course. Since they are an entitled bunch, they flip their failures on Private Ryan and tell him he is too mean and has no Christmas spirit.
Squibby tells Private Ryan that the cadets are right and he is working to infuse Christmas joy into their boot camp. They do holiday charity and carry Christmas trees three miles to a church. Princess Violet breaks into the room where their phones are locked and hires movers. Violet passes it off like she and the other cadets carried the trees and she is kicked out of the bootcamp.
Princess Violet leaves in a huff and decides to walk to the airport after a fight with Private Ryan. He follows her in his car and is surprised to see her stop to help a car stuck in the road. The driver is deaf, and she knows to sign language to communicate with him. Private Ryan is impressed with her and accepts her back. Princess Violet agrees to return only if he lets her decorate for Christmas.
Private Ryan and Princess Violet spend time together and talk about Christmas traditions and, more importantly, Christmas movies. Her family watches The Sound of Music, and he is a Die Hard fan. The romance here is problematic since he is in a position of power over her, so good luck navigating that, Hallmark.
The cadets are tasked with making a Christmas tree out of paper, and the Duke, who hasn’t spoken the whole movie, speaks up and inspires everyone to work together as a team. They also work together to climb Dante’s Peak.
Scotty, Princess Violet’s boyfriend, comes to rescue her, and she tells him she doesn’t need to be rescued. She is graduating in two days and doesn’t want to jeopardize her chances of becoming queen.
Princess Violet ends up in Private Ryan’s bedroom when she climbs up a drain pipe after getting locked out, and she sees Ryan shirtless. He is on a Zoom call with his mother, who is excited to see he has a girlfriend. Private Ryan acknowledges that it would be against company policy. Then he hangs up. Private Ryan talks to Princess Violet about a friendship that went sour when Private Ryan was trying to keep his friend from going to Iraq. The friend went anyway and died, and Private Ryan blames himself. Princess Violet can’t relate, but her dad died once!
The Cadets sing at a Veterans home, and Princess Violet sings in sign language for some vets. One Vet signs, “Is the Paino Player, your boyfriend,” and when Princess Violet says that they can’t date because he is her commanding officer, the Vet sings, “Only until training is over!”Then Private Ryan plays “Edilewise,” and I’m crying. (We are deep into the holiday season!)
Princess Violet gets kicked out of the program when Private Ryan discovers she has had her cell phone the whole time. She goes home and is an embarrassment to her mother. Princess Violet tells her mother that she might not become queen, but that doesn’t matter because she wants to start a school for the deaf. (Okay, Pop off!)
I don’t really know or care how, but Princess Violet throws a party, and everyone is impressed; she ends up graduating from the boot camp anyway! Private Ryan and Princess Violet dance, and she asks permission to kiss him. The end! (I have really mixed feelings about this relationship.)
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Why did Princess Violet know ASL, being from a made-up town in Europe?
“Edelwiss” is a great song and Hammerstine’s last.
