After health issues and infidelity, Nicole’s personal life seems to be falling apart. When she finds out she’s miraculously pregnant, she takes a tip from her best friend to go to a seemingly magical herbal healer and ends up getting a tincture to make her husband fall back in love with her. But despite warnings that she would lose something when she gained his love, Nicole goes through with it–and gets a lot more than she bargained for. Stars Brooke Burfitt, Braxton Angle, Courtney Elvira, Mike Boland, and Dana Anderwald (2024).
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with a blonde tied up in the basement by a handsome but crazy man.
Cut to two weeks earlier; we see the blonde driving me crying. On the driver’s seat is a positive pregnancy test; she doesn’t want her husband to know. The blonde’s name is Nicole, and she compassionately cares for a stroke victim neighbor named Nelly. Nicole comes to find her writer husband, Jim, not at his computer but perhaps in the creepy basement! He jumps out and spooks her like a jerk.
Jim has outbursts of anger and is rude to his wife at every turn. He is behind on a deadline and trashes his office in a rage. When Jim goes out for a drive to cool off, Nicole looks at Jim’s manuscript and makes some edits. (He submits to his editor without knowing she embellished.)
Nicole meets up with her best friend, Kara, who is dating someone online whom she hasn’t met. (That best friend is totally getting catfished by Jim.)
Jim hears from his editor, and he loves the new pages. The only problem is that Jim didn’t write them. He freaks out on Nicole and says he is done with her and their relationship. In a moment of desperation, Nicole shouts that she is pregnant. Jim is unphased and tells Nicole to give the baby up for adoption or raise it on her own.
Nicole visits a yoga instructor/witch on the edge of. The yoga instructor/witch asks Nicole what she really wants. Nicole says she wants Jim to love her again, with his whole heart, like he used to. The Yoga instructor/witch gives Nicole eye drops, one in each eye, to make her husband love her again. There will be consequences, but Nicole is down. She puts eye drops in Jim’s eye while he is sleeping. (Can you even do that? Wouldn’t that wake him up?)
The following day, Jim makes breakfast for Nicole, and she is like, IT WORKED! The confused neighbor, Nelly, breaks into their home and says Jim isn’t Jim anymore. Jim drags Nelly home and whispers something menacing in her ear. Jim’s pages get better, and Nicole is impressed with his progress. She notices he is making more spelling errors. (Is he me!?)
Nicole checks on Nelly the next day and finds the house filled with Post-It reminders. A caretaker there tells Nicole that Nelly’s children have put her in a home after the outburst. Nicole sees broken glass and blood and feels something might have happened.
At work, Nicole’s boss checks in. Nicole assures her boss that things are fine in her marriage and she can focus on possibly writing a book herself. Kara and a weird co-worker named Stuart. Stuart becomes angry at Nicole for taking Jim back without question. He thinks she deserves better, like him? Nicole notices claw marks on Stuart’s arm and leaves.
Nicole is awakened by Jim leaving in the middle of the night, and she goes to the basement to see what Jim has been working. A noise comes from the vent, and when Nicole looks inside, she sees a face! Nicole falls backward and hits her head. She is admitted to the hospital with a concussion, and the baby is fine.
Jim brings his wife home to rest and sets her up on the couch. Nicole finds Nelly’s wallet with blood stuffed under one of the cushions. She suspects her husband is involved and asks him to go visit Nelly in the nursing home. Jim says it is a busy week and also puts a lock on the basement door.
Nicole calls Nelly’s daughter to find out what nursing home her mother is in. The daughter tells Nicole that Nelly is missing and has wandered out of the house. Jim interrupts the conversation and tells Nicole to rest and turn off her phone. Nicole obsesses over her neighbor’s whereabouts and wants to skip her work party. Jim insists that they go.
Kara and Stuart are excited to finally meet Jim at the party. Nicole takes the time to check in with her boss. (Tell me WHY Nicole brings a platter of party subs.) The boss admits to sleeping with Nicole’s husband, and Stuart beats Jim up. They create a whole scene and probably shouldn’t have gone to that party.
Back at work, Stuart resigns from his position and admits he has feelings for Nicole. The boss and Jim corresponded by using misspellings in his manuscript. Nicole goes to her boss’s home and finds her poisoned in the kitchen. Nicole keeps the secret code from the cops and decodes it herself. It leads her to Nelly’s body, buried in the backyard.
Jim takes Nicole’s phone and tries to give her some tea. Nicole confronts Jim about killing Nelly and her boss. Jim has never been the man she married. He was always a narcissist.
We are back to Nicole being tied up in the basement, not by her husband, but by another man. Jim is also tied up in the basement. Nicole frees herself and asks Jim what is going on. She has been hypnotized by the witch with her special tea. He tells Nicole to save herself and leave him because he is a terrible husband.
Nicole pretends to be tied up again and meets the man pretending to be her husband; she makes her move to run away. Kara pulls up to the house, and Nicole thinks she has gotten to safety, but Kara is working with the fake Jim. Kara wants to take over their lives.
Stuart shows up and interrupts Kara’s villain monologue. Fake Jim pulls a gun on Stuart, but Stuart has unsettled business and knocks the weapon from Fake Jim’s hands. Kara grabs the gun, and Fake Jim tries to get it from her, but it goes off, shooting Kara.
18 months later, Nicole, a best-selling author and single mother, is doing a book signing. Jim shows up at the book signing and tells Nicole he is in therapy.
