Synopsis (via Lifetime)

When her long-lost son returns a decade after his abduction, a mother’s joy quickly turns to suspicion as he exhibits increasingly strange behavior. What is he hiding? And is he even actually her son? Starring Tegan Moss and Aiden Howard (2025).

Recap/Wine Thoughts

How do you even pay on a payphone these days?

The movie begins in the city. We see a guy in a baseball cap talking in the world’s last working phone booth. He calls 911 and asks for help. His name is Jack Reese, and he was abducted twelve years ago.

Cut to parents Haley and Richard rushing their kid off to school. Haley gets a call from a police detective telling her that their son has been found. They rush to sit in on the police questioning, watching behind double-sided glass. Jack said he was taken by someone who claimed to be his uncle and aunt in an RV. He saw a news story about his disappearance at a gas station and recognized a picture of himself. Haley is ready to embrace him as their son, but Richard is more practical and wants a blood test.

When they bring Jack home, he wanders around and takes particular interest in Richard’s office. He doesn’t have many memories about who he was before, or share the same interests that he once had. Jack does remember his little brother, Tyler. Haley and Richard are surprised and decide to put Jack in therapy, holding off on sharing a deep family secret.

Dead behind the eyes

Jack is a weirdo for sure; he pops out of nowhere and keeps asking Richard about work. Haley takes him shopping for new clothes, and a white van trails them, seemingly keeping surveillance on Jack. It is a reporter trying to get the story. Haley tries to get them to leave her alone by promising to email them a statement. (That would never work!)

Haley takes Jack to school for some assessment testing and to meet the school guidance counselor. He passes the test. Apparently, Jack’s kidnapper was REALLY good at homeschooling. Jack asks Haley if he can have a cellphone, and it seems like he wants to go to school.

A weird redhead confronts Richard for being Rich. He’s all like, “Yeah, that is my name. Rich short for Richard, long for dick.” (Okay, he might not have said that.) The woman bangs on his car and appears on the window. Haley is also harassed by a random stranger. Their names are Luna and Travis, and they are bad guys for sure.

In the middle of the night, Jack makes a phone call and says he is in with the family. Jack also makes friends with a girl named Summer at school.

This sweater looked comfy

Haley visits Mike, her ex-drugie brother, who lives in an RV. He didn’t kidnap his nephew and has a solid alibi, but people still blamed him for Jack’s disappearance. Mike doesn’t believe that Jack is his nephew and refuses to see him.

Like, why.

Hayley and Richard neglect their one son to take Jack out for lunch and therapy. I’m really not sure what is going on, but Travis breaks into the house and smells Haley’s panties. He looks through Richard’s office and is interrupted by Tyler coming home from school. He calls his parents, but they don’t seem too concerned that their home has been broken into.

The family bank accounts and credit cards start declining, and Travis and Luna have hacked into their personal bank accounts. Jack continues to grill Richard about his work and investments. Richard offers his son way too much information without verifying that he is even who he says he is.

How dumb is this guy?

Luna tracks down Michael and invites herself to eat in his truck with him? It is really freaking weird. Travis shows up, too, and he asks for directions. While Michael is distracted, Luna roofies his soda?!? Oh, wait, no. They OD him with drugs and write a suicide note claiming to have killed Jack twelve years ago.

Jack suddenly leaves home, and he tries to explain what is going on to Summer. I wish someone would explain what’s going on because I’m tired of it.

Jack is working with Travis and Luna. He logs onto Richards’s work laptop and transfers a substantial amount of money. At the same time, Travis runs his car into Richard and Tyler’s car. Richard has internal bleeding. Haley is at the hospital, too, because Michael survived the drug overdose, but he remains in a coma.

Mother seatbelt move

Travis and Jack argue over the money. Blah Blah Blah, Haley sees them talking and confronts him. Haley tells Jack that she accidentally got pregnant with a cult leader. Richard isn’t Jack’s dad. Travis is the cult leader’s brother and is out for revenge. Michael wakes up from his coma and stops Travis from shooting them. He calls the police, and that’s the end of that. Luna gets away.

Jack faces no repercussions for his actions and is accepted in the family even though he deceived them. Cool Cool.

STRAY Thoughts

This one suffered from a big reveal teased at the beginning of the movie, and when it finally came, it was so absurd that I couldn’t have cared less.

  1. The guy playing the uncle was in the 3rd final destination movie with the rollercoaster.

  2. Hmm… The dad was the rational one and the mom the emotional one. I am not sure how I would feel, maybe a bit of both. Was confused with the ages. He remembers his younger brother but is still young enough to go back to school. There also needed to be more communication between the parents regarding everything. Even if he is your son, 12 yrs is a long time, why would you tell him everything about your job like that. Ever heard of Stockholm syndrome. They didn’t find it suspicious he was so interested in that stuff and nothing else. “I’m not a murderer or anything.”-says the murderer in the white “abductor” van. Umm…okay was he really Jack or what. As confused about everything as you are

  3. Did they ever get a DNA done? I’ve noticed on several.of these types of movies, no one gets a DNA test for the kid who supposedly returns after years. They just believe the kid. Its insane. Did I miss something or did the every really confirm that the real Jack was dead? This wow convoluted. And quite disappointing. I give 1 1/2 outta 5 stars and thats being very generous
