To bring her husband’s killer to justice, Amanda Bibbs infiltrated his inner circle. One woman. One mission. And a takedown years in the making.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Inspired by Real Events
Amanda Bibbs is celebrating winning the employee of the year as a dental hygienist. Her husband is unemployed, so of course, he is there for his wife’s big day. In the parking lot, a man confronts her husband for $500 he owes him. Amanda ponies up the cash because she is the breadwinner and doesn’t play any games. Jesse is emasculated and tells Amanda he was humiliated.
Jesse needs someone to run his life because he is dealing with some shady business —a recruiter he pays to find jobs. Jesse lands a gig as a bus driver, but he sees something in the undercarriage he wasn’t supposed to find. Jesse ends up dead on the doorstep, like the worst Trick or Treater to ever show up on Halloween. Amanda talks to the police and tells them about the car that dropped off her dead husband, and promises that he wasn’t involved in any criminal activity.
Christmas goes by, and then New Year’s, and the detectives on the case are moving slowly. Amanda thinks it is because her husband is Black and has a criminal record. She accuses a hot detective of not doing his job and decides to investigate herself. First, Amanda starts with the car company, which is a very good place to start. The police tell Amanda to stick to cavities and let them handle the cadavers.
Amanda gets a makeover, adopts an entirely new identity, and relocates to Atlanta. Zora is a sultry, church-going woman. The pastor tells Zora to take a step class and, you know, pray to Jesus or whatever.
At the step class, where they ARE NOT DOING STEP, Zora seduces a man named Percy. Apparently, they are doing the Chicago Step, which is a smooth, sensual style. That is good for seducing, and Zora has her wrapped around her finger. Then she builds a connection with him and his friends.
Then she buys a gun. I’m not pro guns or anything, but it is ADORABLE. It fits perfectly in her purse as she goes on dates with Percy. She thinks she is nailing this whole undercover thing, but he orders a background check on her because she is too inquisitive.
There is go-kart racing, and sweet walks at night. Amanda/Zora almost forgets that Percy is a bad guy, but then he makes a joke about murdering people, and she is like, “Oh yeah! I’m undercover.” Amanda goes back on her dates with a mission AND a stuffed animal as a gift for Percy. That is weird. She tries to ask him about the bus company he owns, and just as they are about to kiss, Amanda/Zora’s co-workers walk in. She rushes off to avoid blowing her cover.
Amanda/Zoe links up with that guy from the parking lot and sets up a meeting. He tells her that every bus is GPS-tracked and that her husband found some illegal, fake GPL1. (OZEMPIC?!?!?!?)Wow, that is a lame reason to get murdered.
Percy invites Amanda/Zoe over and cooks her dinner. He sees the gun in her purse and decides to have a shooting lesson out back. They seem to really be vibing. Percy talks about his family, and he doesn’t seem like the mastermind of a black-market Wegovy ring. Then again, he has a secret work laptop that he doesn’t connect to the internet because he is worried about cookies and spyware. Amanda/Zoe tries to hack into the computer, but is unsuccessful.
Detectives finally start listening to Amanda and want her to abandon her mission, but she says she is too close. Close to getting caught! Percy’s friend/dance instructor (with a toothache) doesn’t trust Amanda/Zoe and tells him to be careful. He does the opposite, and they have some sexy time. Afterward, Amanda has a good cry in the shower.
The toothache friend goes to the dentist, where Amanda works, and learns who she really is from the Employee of the Year plaque on the wall. She tries to call Percy to warn him, but her mouth is numb and she can’t spit it out. Detectives who have been tracing the toothache friend call Amanda and tell her that her cover is blown.
Amanda steals the laptop, and the chase ensues. It is a good thing she went go-kart racing earlier in the movie. When Percy breaks his way on the bus that she stole, Amanda shoots him with the pink gun. He was just pretending to be a bad shot. Her husband taught her.
Percy faces 30 years in prison, and Amanda is free to move on from the loss of her husband and go back to dental school to become a dentist with the help of Jesus from church, randomly.
STRAY Thoughts
This was well-plotted and entertaining.
Why was I rooting for Amanda and Percy to get together? This is why I’m single.
