A grandmother’s last wish brings two estranged sisters, Faith and Kelly, back together to travel to the French Alps for Christmas to recreate her first trip there with their grandfather. Facing all the challenges and wonders this unique holiday adventure brings, they learn to cherish their sisterhood above all, while also making room for romance to blossom between Kelly and their French mountaineer guide, Frederic. Starring Ashley Williams, Laci J. Mailey, and Julien Samani.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with sisters, Kelly and Faith, in home videos celebrating the holidays with their grandparents. (Their mom died in a car accident, and their father abandoned them.)
Fast forward to grown-up sisters living life in the city. Kelly is going through a breakup and sorting through old videos to make a Celebration of Life video. Faith is sorting through their grandmother’s estate since her passing and is in town for an emergency will reading.
The lawyer gives the sisters their grandmother’s journal and travels the exact same places she did as a young woman. The grandmother even made travel arrangements to the French Alps! Wee, Wee! (There is also a hot travel guide named Frédéric.)
Kelly doesn’t want to go, but late at night, she reads the journal and changes her mind. Wait, no, she doesn’t. What is Kelly’s problem? Okay, after seeing a quote that says, “Life is a daring adventure or nothing.” Kelly joins her sister.
The first stop is a French cafe, the best kind, and they meet Frédéric. He hits on Kelly before realizing he is her tour guide. Faith wants them to get together more than she loves croissants.
The sisters take the train to the French countryside, and Frédéric shows them around the town, which is a mountain climbing town. They check into a beautiful Chalet and pour up some wine. Faith invites Frédéric to stay with them, but Kelly thinks it is inappropriate because he is a horny French guy who hit on her. Faith gets her way yet again, and Freddy is cool to stay.
Frédéric apologizes to Kelly for flirting, and his Pepé Le Pew self could flirt with me all day! They go buy some cheese and stop to listen to French Christmas music. Frédéric is brought up on stage to play, and it is swoon-worthy. (Minus the girl he is singing with, get her out of there! It should be me! I know “Jolly Old St. Nick”)
Faith steps away to take a call from her boyfriend; she needs space and is used to running away from her problems. He is disappointed and hangs up on her ass. He did propose, after all. Faith should dignify him with an answer.
The sisters have crepes for breakfast with mimosas, and that singing girl is STILL hanging around. They then go to a spa day where they take a cold plunge, where Ashley Williams wears a long-sleeve bathing suit… never seen that? Is this a trend? Then they go to the hot tub. (Shirtless Hunk, check!) The sisters get into an argument, scaring off the French hotties.
They quickly make up, because the trip/movie must go on.
Kelly opens up to Frédéric about her grandparents raising her and blames herself for stifling their adventurous spirit. Frédéric suggests that raising them could have been their biggest advantage of all. Then they slow dance and kiss on the dance floor. Kelly cries in his mouth and says she doesn’t want to just have a vacation romance. (Meanwhile, I’m over here like, sign me up!)
As they prep for the mountain climb, Kelly is shocked by the amount of gear and thinks it seems pretty dangerous. They take the cable car up to the summit, and it is an amazing view. Kelly is scared of the ride up How is she going to hike up a mountain? Some French wine will help!
They are at the highest point in Europe, which is basically in the clouds. There is a Pas Du Vide, which is a glass box you walk into. That is so fun.
Then they do some actual traversing, and I’m less into that. Haha, I’m lazy, but I would do it. A snowstorm rolls in quickly, making the trek to the cabin tough.
When they arrive at the cabin, Grandma has left them meaningful gifts. Kelly gets a journal to document her travels. Faith receives peach pits to plant some roots, and Frédéric gets a little guitar. (Weird audio thing here where they replace “dead” with “hurt.” Hallmark talks about dead parents all the time, but can’t speak about a deadly situation?)
Faith wants to go out into the storm, and Kelly tells her sister to be responsible. Faith argues that Kelly needs to take a leap of… faith and not let the good things pass her by. (Like, Frédéric, for example!)
While they sleep, Faith goes out on her own.
Kelly and Frédéric rush to rescue Faith. (Who goes out with NO GLOVES ON?!?!) They sit on top of the world and hash out their feelings. Taking from one another what the other sister doesn’t have.
Once they get to the top, they find the lock that belonged to their grandparents, who would be so proud of how far they have come. Faith puts the lock on for the sisters and tells them about her boyfriend proposing. Kelly takes a chance and dates Frédéric. They kiss on top of a mountain.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Julien Marlon Samani is very casually charming.
While I haven’t climbed the French Alps, I do have a lot of mountain climbing experience and would be so down.
