Following the death of her father, Fancy (Brandy Norwood) has been more determined than ever to uphold her father’s cherished Christmas traditions as her mother Evelyn (Debbi Morgan) has also begun losing her sight. But things aren’t a smooth ride as Fancy simultaneously is planning her bridezilla baby sister, Belle’s (Sy’rai Smith), wedding. When a water pipe bursts and disrupts the fairytale wedding plans, Fancy finds herself unexpectedly drawn to the rugged, yet charming, contractor Jaylen (Robert C Riley) who is tasked with renovating the house. Through all the chaos, she learns valuable lessons about faith, family, and the true meaning of Christmas. Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman (UnReal) also stars as Fancy’s co-worker Germaine.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Brandy runs around Chicago and is annoyed that her mother, Debbie Morgan, pressures her to spend more time with family and less time at WERK!
Brandy works in fashion, and it is WILD there. Everyone is thirsty AF. Brandy’s assistant has nails for every reindeer, and she wants to run them down the back of a hot contractor named Jaylen. Her gay co-worker, played by Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, is also obsessed with Jaylen.
Brandy doesn’t see it because she has a boyfriend. She has hired Jaylen to help make her house more accessible for her mother, who has a degenerative eye disease. Debbie Morgan is charmed by Jaylen… even if she can’t really see him. She invites him to trim the tree with the fam.
Thankfully, Brandy sings pretty early in this one. Cause this plot is garbage. Brandy’s sister wants to get married shotgun-style. There is a leaky pipe in the house, and Debbie Morgan is depressed AF. MERRY CHRISTMAS? Brandy is also up against Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman in a competition to design the spring line and take over the role of Creative Director. It is all just too much.
Richard returns to town from a work trip and is disrespectful to Jaylen from the get-go. Jaylen doesn’t take the bait and is the bigger man. Richard high-key sucks because he pressures Brandy to get a promotion, wants to put her mother in a home, and shames her for hiring a contractor. Richard dangles a potential proposal like a carrot before leaving for another work trip.
Jaylen has to work overtime due to a burst pipe, and the sister wants to have her wedding at the home. Deena, the sister, turns into a bridezilla and pits Brandy against Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman to design her wedding dress.
Suddenly, Jaylen gets very Christian and buys Brandy a pearl-encrusted crucifix because it reminds him of her. (Pearls are Fancy, I guess.) He opens up to Brandy about his divorce and career change.
Debbie Morgan has an emotional breakdown while whittling some wood while blind. A vision (poor choice of words, me.) of her husband comes to her and tells her that Brandy needs her mother and to not waste God’s gift of time on earth.
There is a varnish fight, which is not cute. Isn’t that toxic?
It is time for the big announcement at work, and Richard is out of town for work, AGAIN. So, Jaylen fills in. Brandy feels like she is at her prom, because her character randomly didn’t go and still cares about it 25 years later. To be fair, this work even seems a lot like a high school event. When Brandy gets the promotion, I was almost expecting pig’s blood to come down from the ceiling.
Brandy resigns from the company because she needs to do her own thing. At the end of the night, Jaylen makes a move, but Brandy shuts him down; she is in a situation.
FINALLY, Debbie Morgan wears her glasses. Just in time to see Brandy decline Richard’s proposal for marriage.
It’s time for the Christmas Eve wedding, which is rude; don’t do that. The sister picks Brandy’s wedding dress design, and Brandy picks Jaylen to be her man!
The husband ghost shows up at the wedding, too, and, ironically, Debbie is the only one who sees him.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Fancy was such a name choice.
